Over at FishwrapI understand from Fishwrap that some members of the 112th Congress’ 2nd session have introduced a resolution in support of Catholic sisters!
Exciting, I know.
The House Resolution conflates all Catholic sisters in the USA with the leadership of certain groups of sisters who belong to Network or the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (a subsidiary of the Magisterium of Nuns and made up only of the leaders of groups of religious, not all the sisters in the groups).
It is hard to imagine that anyone can be so thick after all the debate, but – hey! – this is Congress we are talking about!

Indeed. What other causes are the objects of House Resolutions?
I looked around at some other House Resolutions and found these:
- 2009 House Bill 1243: To provide for the award of a gold medal on behalf of Congress to Arnold Palmer in recognition of his service to the Nation in promoting excellence and good sportsmanship in golf.
- 2009 House Resolution 210: Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that providing breakfast in schools through the National School Breakfast Program has a positive impact on classroom performance.
- 2009 H.Res. 110 Congratulating the National Football League champion Pittsburgh Steelers for winning Super Bowl XLIII and becoming the most successful franchise in NFL history with their record 6th Super Bowl title

So, H. RES. 689 is right up there on the list of things to do.
I hope they have a vote on H.RES. 689 right away!
I am reminded of the scene in The West Wing when Leo and his lawyer are jousting about the importance of a resolution about Pres. Bartlett:

I was looking at the examples of past resolutions here, and they range from the sublime and deserving (Arnold Palmer, Pittsburgh Steelers) to the ridiculous and non-deserving (Michael Jackson and LCWR).
Wow–and Congress wonders why Americans hold them in contempt.

Anna is my supposed representative. Voicing my opinion has always proved fruitless. Well, at least she is devoting her time to this important resolution rather than some other mischief.
Ugh…I hope a true Catholic rep. calls this BS out for what it truly is. I love the sisters with all my heart but this nonsense has got to stop. The leaders of the LCWR and their members that have gone off the reservation need to be corrected by the only body that has authority, this side of heaven at least. All this nonsense flows from the mysterious “Spirit of V2” that lurks around our church like the Not Me character in the Family Circus cartoon. Which is more important, the actual Holy Spirit or the “Spirit of V2”? For some, I believe the latter is more important than any part of the Trinity let alone the Holy Spirit.

Whereas the Leadership Conference of Women Religious is a persecuted minority within the Catholic Church; and
Whereas the Catholic Church is a stumbling block to the progress of modern society; and
Whereas the Leadership Conference of Women Religious represents an alternate teaching voice of the catholic church;
Now therefore be it resolved that this House finds the Leadership Conference of Women Religious to be an exemplary organization, in the finest traditions of American protests, minority rights’ organizations and religiously tolerant groups;
Be it further resolved that some portion of the tax revenue, currently not collected by the IRS but soon to be collected, on properties owned by the “Catholic” church, be diverted to allow public financing of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party.
On the other hand, isn’t this West Wing episode the one in which Leo McGarry eventually decides that a resolution against the President would be a bad thing?

I don’t have a creative suggestion to follow the “Whereas,” but my favorite part of the entire document is in the sponsorship section, where it states “of Ohio” following Mr. Ryan’s name. If ever there should be an “emphasis in original” in a House Resolution, it should be on those two words.
I’m pretty sure that if we dig deep enough we’ll discover that George Soros is funneling money to them too…
