A newsreel account of the opening of Vatican II.

I thought the mention of Telstar and Card. Mindszenty were interesting:

Father, I’m confused. What does a sedia gestatoria have to do with the Council? You must have the wrong newsreel! ;-)

@fatherz Cardinal Eugène Tisserant always fascinates me for some reason. Can you recommend and accurate biography on him Father?

On the second video, about 40 seconds in: is that a young Bishop Wojty?a ?

It’s very touching to see these newsreels. I remember from schooldays what a marvellous event this was and how we all fervently prayed daily for the success of the Council. In the event, it opened a Pandora’s box of troubles on the Church from which we are still recovering.

The last years since then have left us battle-scarred and the very term ‘Vatican II’ sometimes starts the blood pressure rising, since it is invoked so often as an excuse for some abuse or latest outrage. But battles do not last forever and we have a year ahead which could bring many graces and perhaps under this Pope, some sort of tranquility of soul within the Church. Please God it will.

    terryprest,
I think so. That profile is pretty distinctive, ears and hairline the same as well.
