Fatima’s major theme and YOU

I think that what happened at Fatima is an event that is ongoing, with urgent ramifications for us today.

Taken all together, the central message of Our Lady in her apparitions at Fatima is the urgent need to pray, do penance, and make reparation for sins, our own and those of others.

This major theme was prepared before Our Lady started to appear in May 1917.

angel of fatimaIn the late September or early October of 1916 an angel appeared to the three children of Fatima to whom Our Blessed Mother would later appear 100 years ago today.

The angel taught them a prayer, an act of reparation.

The angel calling himself the Angel of Peace held a chalice over which was suspended a Host. Drops of the Precious Blood fell from the Host into the chalice.  The angel prostrated himself on the ground before the Host and Chalice, and repeated the act of reparation three times.  He then administered Holy Communion to the children saying, “Eat and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Make reparation for their crimes and console Our Lord.”

An Act of Reparation From the Angel of of Peace at Fatima:

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, I adore You profoundly and I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He Himself is offended. And by the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners.

  1. It strikes me that the phrase used by the Angel, “Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity…” is exactly (at least in English) the words from the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

  2. Rosary Rose says:

When the Queen of Heaven comes to Earth to give us a message, we need to pay attention.

  3. SundaySilence says:

After the phrase “in all the tabernacles of the world” I add “and in all my Communions- past, present, and future”.

No disrespect is meant to the Angel of Peace by my amending of this most necessary act of reparation. The words just happened as I started to really focus on the enormity of what it means to receive the Eucharist.

  4. JabbaPapa says:

There is no way to describe the Beatific Vision to others, but the Miracles and Messages of Fatima are very close to the Holy Eucharist in His Gift and Grace of Holiness.

  5. un-ionized says:

I was horrified by the Pope’s recent statements about deciding which Mary we venerate, implying that she is not staying God’s arm.

philothea.d, St. Faustina’s diary is interesting to read.

  6. un-ionized says:

SundaySilence, I think we are all supposed to put ourselves in these prayers and adding words that are meaningful to us is one way to do that.

  7. hicks says:

That was very strange, un-ionized, I agree. Was he trying to chide us for taking the message of Fatima too seriously? Was telling us that Our Lady of Fatima is a plaster statue and that instead we should listen to him and his mercy talk? I confess I found the whole thing disturbing.

  8. un-ionized says:

hicks, it sounded to me like what the Methodists say. I don’t think our Pope is a Methodist though!

  9. Gerhard says:

Many thanks for bringing us back to the major theme. Too many distressing (I could weep)distractions at today’s canonization Mass which summarized everything that is wrong with today’s Church: no altar crucifix (a cross with the resurrected Lord beside it is not a crucifix), the papal throne centre-stage, no sign of a tabernacle, the monstrosity of a monstrance deliberately in a baser metal than gold, the naff hanker-chief send-off for the statue of Our Lady, the applause…

  10. Serviam says:

The angel of the Lord…prostrate on the ground before the Holy Eucharist. How awe-inspiring is that? And, might I add that when Heaven sends and angel to give Holy Communion, the Host is placed on the tongue. I rest my case. :-P

Thank you for the beautiful Fatima posts and reminders Fr. Z!

  11. msc says:

Gerhard: the whole thing lacked the necessary mystery, but I am watching the Mass itself right now I see a crucifix on the altar (albeit facing away from the congregation), and the cupboard behind the altar would seem to a de facto tabernacle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpbvxgltmVY — there is a good view at 1:48 ff.).

  12. Felicia says:

From Father’s post: “Taken all together, the central message of Our Lady in her apparitions at Fatima is the urgent need to pray, do penance, and make reparation for sins, our own ***and those of others***.” (My emphasis)

That part intrigued me, so I checked the old Catholic Encyclopedia, in the article for “Reparation” which says: “We can thus make some sort of reparation to the justice of God for our own offences against Him, and by virtue of the Communion of the Saints, the oneness and solidarity of the mystical Body of Christ, ***we can also make satisfaction and reparation for the sins of others.***” (Again, my emphasis.)

I’ve been reading up on Indulgences lately, and want to know the fine points of how this all fits together. Does this making Reparation for the sins of others include ***living** people?

If so, how does Reparation fit in with Indulgences, as one cannot get those for any living person other than oneself? Are Indulgences a subset of Reparation, or something else altogether? In terms of doing Reparation for others, are we limited to asking that they be given the grace of conversion, so they can do their own reparation afterwards?

Last night, on our Lady of Fatima’s day, Portugal won the European Song Competition for the first time ever!
