Gustav – a prayer

Graciously hear us, O Lord,
when we call upon You,
and grant unto our supplications a calm atmosphere,
that we, who are justly afflicted for our sins,
may, by Your protecting mercy,
experience pardon.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    This feed has the four major TV channels from New Orleans covering the evacuation and storm. It is as dramatic as you could imagine.

    For those in harm’s way, get out your blessed palm and burn it while praying for protection.

    “These solemnly blessed palms are sacramentals, or signs of Christ’s grace which help Christians in the practice of the faith, and, as they are associated with Christ’s triumph, the palms symbolize victory over spiritual danger and death. For this reason, palms are associated with martyrdom, and often appear in paintings and sculpture of those who were martyred for the faith. This also explains the old custom of burning a palm in the stove in time of danger (from a threatening storm, for example).”

    O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

    Our Father in Heaven through the intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, spare us during this Hurricane season from all harm. Protect us and our homes from all disasters of nature. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    Father, all the elements of nature obey your command. Calm the storms and hurricanes that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise of your goodness. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

    This is the prayer we say in Puerto Rico:

    Oración para alejar las tempestades

    Oh Dios, a quien obedecen todos los elementos del
    universo, serena la furia de las tempestades para que la
    amenaza de su poder desatado se convierta en motivo
    de alabanza a tu nombre. Por Nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
    Amén.

    I suppose in English it would be something like this:

    O God, whom all the elements of the universe obey, calm the storms’ fury so that the threat of their unleashed power may become reason for us to praise your name. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

    The priest at Mass this morning added a Collect, Secret, and Postcommunion for the aversion of storms (from the section of the 1962 Missal with votive collects). It is lovely that Mother Church is able to do that.

    As a Catholic here in the Philippines, a country visited by tropical cyclones, typhoons, on a weekly and monthly basis, I emphatize and most importantly offer a prayer for those of you threatened by Gustav. Especially those near the affected areas, just to let you know you are not alone in this. May our Lord who is Master of the Elements, “who even the wind and the waves obey him” strengthen us in carrying our crosses and holding fast to Him who is our sure Anchor.
