CDF priest comes out of the closet and makes demands. He’s fired.

On the eve of the Synod, a homosexual priest working for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and teaching at a university in Rome publicly announced himself to be a homosexual and that he has a “companion”.  He took advantage of the imminent Synod and recent news stories about the “gay friendly” Pope Francis to come out and also to issue an absurd 10 point “manifesto” demanding that the Church change her teachings about homosexuality.

Keep in mind that even were the Church to do that – in his dreams – it wouldn’t be enough. Nothing is enough for militant “gays”.

The Holy See’s reaction?  He’s fired from his positions.

ChurchMilitant has a pretty summary of the train wreck that occurred.

ROME, October 3, 2015 (ChurchMilitant.com) – A Polish priest working at the Congregration for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) has admitted his homosexuality [poor man] and issued a manifesto demanding changes to Church teaching. [deluded man]

The priest, Msgr. Krzysztof Charamsa, is a professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University [a Jesuit institution] and has been on the Vatican’s International Theological Commission since 2009. [big deal]

In a video released yesterday by the Polish LGBT activist group Artyku? osiemnasty, Msgr. Charamsa declares his homosexuality  [poor man] and admits to having a boyfriend. [deluded man]

Also released along with the video was a 10-point manifesto of demands. [deluded man]

1. Disposal of homophobia and anti-gay discrimination
[…]

2. Condemnation of punishment for homosexuality

[…]

3. Cessation of the Church’s interference in guaranteeing human rights by democratic states

[…]

4. Canceling incompetent and prejudicial documents

We demand the Pope revise the Catechism and repeal all the cruel documents that are incompetent to deal with the issue of homosexual persons, who are the object both of the Church’s compassion and stigmatization — in particular, the documents of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the heir to the Holy Inquisition. Unacceptable documents include:

a) the declaration Persona Humana from 1975, [let’s all make sure to re-read it!] discussing among other things the “pathological constitution” of homosexual persons, which by their nature supposedly “have difficulty adjusting socially” and carry an “disorder” that “without the necessary and significant adjustment” is considered a “depravity”;

b) Letter on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons of 1986, [an excellent, thoughtful and charitable document] which calls for “compassion” for homosexuals, who “suffer” from same-sex attraction, and which accepts the existence of “fair discrimination” against homosexuals and rejects only “unjust discrimination” against them;

c) the outrageous Considerations Concerning the Response to Legislative Proposals on the Non-Discrimination of Homosexual Persons in 1992; [Find it HERE]

d) Considerations Regarding Proposals to Legalize Unions Between Homosexual Persons from 2003, [Find it HERE] according to which homosexuality is “devoid of any genuine affective maturity,” and homosexual relationships are devoid of any “human and ordered form of sexual relations”;

e) the Catechism of the Church Catholic, sections 2357–2359, teaches that not only same-sex acts but also homosexual orientation are “objectively disordered.” It also emphasizes that by nature, homosexuals have no emotional complementarity with other human persons they love. And it adds that for most of us orientation is a difficult experience requiring compassion toward our neighbor, but not without avoiding just discrimination. How does the Church know what is our suffering and difficulty? Well, it is not sexual orientation, but homophobia from the Church. Learning via the Catechism is offensive, apart from the fact that the very definition of homosexuality is deficient, if not quite false. The analysis of the situation of homosexual persons is also deficient.

5. Immediate cancellation of discriminatory instructions about denying the priesthood to homosexual persons

We demand that the Pope immediately abolish regrettable instructions about refusing the ordination of homosexuals, endorsed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. [I say STRENGTHEN IT NOW! Find it HERE]

6. Initiate a serious interdisciplinary scientific reflection over the morality of human sexuality

[…]

7. Revision of the interpretation of biblical texts on homosexuality

We demand that the Church treat seriously the question of its own interpretation of the Bible, freeing itself of fundamentalism, noting verses that talk about homosexual people, never condemning them, and contextualizing biblical texts that address homogenital acts.

8. Adoption of ecumenical dialogue with our Lutheran and Anglican brothers about homosexuality

[…]

9. The need to ask for forgiveness toward homosexuals

[…]

10. Respect for and belief in homosexuals and change in the distorted position of the Church on what a homosexual Christian life should look like

[…]

Text of “Gazeta Wyborcza” received from Fr. Christopher Charamsy via Vox Cantoris. Translation slightly edited for clarity.

Interview Transcript:

[…]

Msgr. Charamsa is expected to give a press conference on Saturday at noon in Rome. [Link to Corriere della sera – the conference was held in a restaurant]

The Holy See has reacted by firing this priest from his position at the CDF and his teaching jobs.

From the Bollettino today:

Traduzione in lingua inglese

With regard to the declarations and interview given by Msgr. Krzystof Charamsa it should be observed that, notwithstanding the respect due to the events and personal situations, and reflections on the issue, the decision to make such a pointed statement on the eve of the opening of the Synod appears very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the Synod assembly to undue media pressure. Msgr. Charamsa will certainly be unable to continue to carry out his previous work in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical universities, while the other aspects of his situation shall remain the competence of his diocesan Ordinary.

[01621-EN.01] [Original text: Italian – working translation]

There is no way that recent news items did not play a role in precipitating this coming out party.

This priest is now done … as a priest.  His ordinary gets to deal with him now.

The sodomites are emboldened.   I suspect that this will sooner or later break out in violent demonstrations and protests.

Now more than ever, bishops need to make sure that their seminarians are heterosexual and clear about the Church’s teachings, especially about the pastoral care of homosexual persons.

Moreover, I suggest to priests and bishops that they increase their situational awareness, even with specialized training, and secure their residences and increase security at their parishes and institutions.

Horror in Oregon … and Glory? A reminder about your own soul and death.

I am sure you are all as horrified and alarmed at what happened in Oregon yesterday as I (and at certain knee jerk political reactions) and that you are offering your prayers for the victims and families and perhaps also the perp.

If reports are accurate the murderer targeted for death the Christians who identified themselves.

According to a story at WND, …

The Oregon gunman who lined up his victims and asked specifically which ones were Christians before shooting them execution style had a special interest in “magick” and “spiritualism” and had joined a dating website called “Spiritual Passion.”

On the site, [I won’t post his name – damnatio memoriae], 26, who killed nine people and injured seven at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg before he was shot and killed by police, describes his politics as “Republican” and his interests as “killing zombies,” meditation, the occult and punk-rock music.

He also made clear that he had a disdain for organized religion.

Using the handle “IronCross45,” Mercer describes himself as a “not religious,” man who lives with his parents. He belonged to a group on the site who shared common interests in “magick and the occult.

So, this guy was into things that could open himself up even to demonic forces.  Deviant in the head and perhaps even possessed.

I wonder if he played lots of violent video games.

If this deviant killed those people for hatred of Christianty… when the victims had not denied their Christian identity… perhaps they do indeed at this moment see their Creator, as the killer ominously threatened.

May God have mercy on them all, but there may be that silver lining in the teary cloud.

Some of them may be modern martyrs.

This incident should prompt us all to greater situational awareness on many levels, not the least is the spiritual level.

Pay attention to your surroundings and the people around you.  No, really.  Don’t blunder along like a zombie glued to your stupid phone.  Look around.  Be aware.  Keep your head on a swivel.

Pay attention to your state of soul and the exigencies of your vocation.  If being alert I your material surrounding is important, being honest and observant in regard to your soul is even more important.

Death is short.  Eternity isn’t.

I urge you to spend time thinking about the Four Last Things.   We don’t know the moment or manner of our going before the Judge.

Be prepared.

GO TO CONFESSION!

Get yourselves right with God, self and neighbor.

Don’t be presumptuous when it comes to your salvation or God’s mercy.

Pray.  Ask God to save you and your loved ones from a sudden and unprovided death.

Pope Francis, Kim Davis meeting: development

I am getting notes that a statement has been released saying that the meeting between Pope Francis and Kim Davis, doesn’t necessarily mean support from the Holy Father for what Davis did. HERE

Of course not, but…

watch the usual suspects start the usual conga line!

Statement regarding a meeting of Pope Francis and Mrs. Kim Davis at the Nunciature in Washington, DC (Fr F. Lombardi, Director of the Press Office of the Holy See)

The brief meeting between Mrs. Kim Davis and Pope Francis at the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, DC has continued to provoke comments and discussion. In order to contribute to an objective understanding of what transpired I am able to clarify the following points:

Pope Francis met with several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet him as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City. Such brief greetings occur on all papal visits and are due to the Pope’s characteristic kindness and availability. The only real audience granted by the Pope at the Nunciature was with one of his former students and his family.

The Pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects.

Furthermore, former Father Greg Reynolds is still excommunicated.

UPDATE:

If the nervous powers that be really wanted this story to go away, perhaps they shouldn’t have released a statement.  That statement guaranteed a couple more days, at least, in the news cycle.   Unless… their desire to placate a special interest group within and without outweighed their desire to make this news disappear.

Nancy “The Theologian” Pelosi tears the throat out of a reporter asking about big-business abortion

Nancy “the Theologian” Pelosi (D-CA), devout practicing Catholic and mother!  Ain’t she sweet?

Listen to her nasty snapping tone when she is asked about big business abortion by a reporter.  To defend her darling Planned Parenthood, she’d tear the throat out of any member of the press so audacious as to suggest that perhaps this was an issue for comment.

HERE  Start at about 14:00.  It is only about a minute long.

Apparently big business abortion’s – with which she has an intimate relationship of mutual help – trafficking in baby parts is not a public policy issue.

It’s as if Francis had met with the homophobic dictator Kim DaeVis

davis pope francis

UPDATE: Go to the bottom to see what Pope Francis responded on this issue to a reporter during the flight from these USA back to Rome.

ORIGINAL Published on: Oct 1, 2015 @ 13:26

Yesterday I posted about reactions to the Pope’s meeting with Kentucky country clerk Kim Davis, who went to jail rather than issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples.

Pope Francis meets with Kim Davis. The Left melts down.

More reactions are coming now.  Make popcorn.

It is as if Pope Francis had met with the insane and murderous homophobic Asian dictator Kim DaeVis.

“How could be do such a thing!”

Francis should be lovingly and welcomingly and, of course, humbly, only embracing lesbians and kissing babies and smiling at nuns (as an obvious rebuke to meanies like … you know… bishops and, naturally, the entire Roman Curia)?

“If he met with Kim Davis … well!… sputter… it must be… it has to be a… a… mistake of some kind!  RIGHT?”

The Pope meets for a few minutes with a clerk from a Appalachian county so small that you could pitch your tobacco juice can over it and the Left has a spittle-flecked nutty.

“His whole visit was RUINED!”

At the pro-homosexual National Sodomitical Reporter (aka Fishwrap), Joshua J. McElwee attempts to play down the meaning of the meeting: What we don’t know about Francis’ Kim Davis meeting:

For a while there, we had become used to papal mis-messaging.

The examples during Pope Benedict XVI’s papacy were legendary. Take, for one example, his 2006 speech in Regensburg, Germany. Meant as an invitation for dialogue between Christians and Muslims, the message of the speech was overcome by a phrase he quoted from a 14th century Byzantine emperor that deeply offended Muslims.

Until now, Pope Francis had seemed much better about sticking to his message and not undermining himself. [Ummm… really?  Ask your feminist friends about that.] But that’s exactly what some think he has done by meeting secretly during his U.S. visit with Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who has refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Just hours after giving his incredibly well-received speech to a joint meeting of Congress, Francis apparently met with Davis at the Vatican’s Washington embassy and told her to “stay strong” in her objection, for reasons of conscience, to issuing the licenses.

For many, the mis-message is rather stark.  [You are simply expected to agree with his premise: that this was some kind of misstep, a mistake, that he got “off message”.]

[…]

On the other hand, is it possible that the Roman Pontiff was actually on message?

Are we not allowed to think that the Pope, who had probably heard at least something from an aid about why he was meeting this woman, is also – like her – not in favor of same-sex marriage and sodomy?

As a matter of fact, when you review carefully what the Holy Father has said in the past about homosexuality, he essentially sends the same message that Our Lord told the woman taken in adultery: “We don’t hate or condemn you, but you have got to stop sinning.”

Still at NSR, MS Winters finally chimes in with the “It was a goof!” theory:

So, in response to Ivereigh and Allen, let me offer an alternative theory of how the meeting happened and what it means: Somebody messed up. A source at the bishops’ conference told me on background that the meeting happened “against the advice of the bishops’ conference.” Other reports in both the Washington Post and the New York Times agree that the meeting was arranged by a “Vatican official.” Seeing as the meeting happened at thenunciature in Washington, it could only have happened with the approval and participation of the nuncio, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano. Perhaps he did not understand how Ms. Davis’ case was not really an instance of conscientious objection. Perhaps, he felt sorry for her, as I did, because sending that poor woman to jail was overkill by the judge. Perhaps he did not see how the news of this meeting would trample on the pope’s message and begin to drown out everything else the pope said or did during his six days here. Of course, it is a nuncio’s job to know such things and, most especially, not to put his boss in a compromising position. If the President visits a foreign country, and the ambassador, against the advice of the State Department, nonetheless introduces the president to someone who causes a controversy that reflects badly on the president, that mistake is laid at the feet of the ambassador, not the president. If this meeting was all the nuncio’s doing then he should, in conscience, quit too.

I forget.  Did NSR rush to explain away the Sickle-fix given to the Pope in South America?  Or was that gesture filled with thoughtful nuance and subtle humility?

Again… maybe someone did not mess up.

Perhaps what the Pope did is part and parcel of what his six days in these USA were about.  MS Winters is one of those who desperately want “culture warriors” (for him, a really bad label and mark of shame) to be silenced.

Perhaps the Holy Father isn’t entire finished waging his own subtle culture war.  Dunno… it’s hard to figure out this Pope sometimes.

At Esquire there is a piece about the Davis meeting from the Dan Brown School of Things Catholic.  This channels a little of what MS Winters went on about: it’s that mean old Archbp. Vigano!  HE did it!  And wasn’t he close to… Ratzinger?!?  Nudge wink.

LifeSite has a different view, predictably:

We are ever so grateful for the meeting with Kim Davis. It was likely the most important meeting the pope had while in the USA. However the secrecy of the Davis meeting and the downplaying of the Little Sisters meeting in light of the fanfare of the other meetings, leaves the impression that those high profile meetings were the real priority, when in truth it’s just the opposite.

That same impression was left by the pope’s overt calls for change on poverty, climate change, the death penalty and the arms trade, while calls for change on abortion and same-sex “marriage” were made in veiled references missed by most. [The catholic Left likes to miss a lot of things.]

Davis’ lawyer Mat Staver explained the Vatican’s desire for secrecy and the fact that the Vatican is not releasing the photos it took of the meeting, telling CBS, “The Vatican had specific themes it wanted to focus on. … The Vatican wanted to focus its message on a lot of issues.”

On the other hand, by not releasing photos and by making vague statements, they guaranteed that the story would remain in the news cycle for a while longer.  Also, it is interesting to read the Kim Davies meeting in tandem with the “surprise” visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor.  No?

Look.  I am not sure what the meeting with Kim Davis meant, but the facts are that it seems really to have happened, that someone wanted it to happen, and that now it means something, not nothing.

I suspect that this meeting, along with the meeting with the Little Sister of the Poor was like a carrier wave in the Pope’s communications.  Liberals would like to suppress that carrier wave.

It is fascinating to watch the media reactions and spins.

UPDATE:

During the presser on the airplane departing these USA for Rome, Pope Francis took a question from Terry Moran of ABC News (HERE):

Q: Holy Father, do you also support those individuals, including government officials, who say they cannot in good conscience, their own personal conscience, abide by some laws or discharge their duties as government officials, for example in issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples? Do you support those kinds of claims of religious liberty?

A: I can’t have in mind all cases that can exist about conscientious objection. But, yes, [!] I can say conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right. It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right. Conscientious objection must enter into every juridical structure because it is a right, a human right. Otherwise we would end up in a situation where we select what is a right, saying ‘this right that has merit, this one does not.’ It (conscientious objection) is a human right. It always moved me when I read, and I read it many times, when I read the Chanson de Roland, when the people were all in line and before them was the baptismal font – the baptismal font or the sword. And, they had to choose. They weren’t permitted conscientious objection. It is a right and if we want to make peace we have to respect all rights.

Q: Would that include government officials as well?

A: It is a human right and if a government official is a human person, he has that right. It is a human right.

Bp. Olmsted (D. Phoenix) issues to men a tremendous call to battle!

Liberal catholics want to wussify the Church.  They effectively embrace the world’s ways and think the Church should adapt her teachings and practices to shifting secular mores.  They accuse those who still dare to stand up in the public square and defend what is written into our being by God and what is taught through divine revelation and the Magisterium of the Church of being “culture warriors”.  Apparently being a warrior of any kind is bad, but it is especially bad when you tell them that, no, you can’t support abortion, you can’t have sex with people of the same sex and, no, there really are difference between men and women.

From Catholic World News I read about a challenge that Bishop Thomas Olmsted issued to Catholic men in a pastoral letter called “Into The Breach” (cf Henry V, iii: “Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more…”)

Bishop Olmsted issues powerful challenge to Catholic men

In a powerfully worded apostolic exhortation addressed to the men of his diocese, Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix, Arizona, has urged them to “not hesitate to engage in the battle that is raging around you.[MS is going to swoon upon his fainting couch and probably even clutch at his pearls.]

In a 23-page exhortation, entitled “Into the Breach,” Bishop Olmsted challenges men to join in a “primarily spiritual” battle against forces that are “progressively killing the remaining Christian ethos in our society and culture, and even in our homes.”

Bishop Olmsted writes that the cultural crisis has arisen primarily because “Catholic men have not been willing to ‘step into the breach,’ and his purpose in the document, released on September 29, is to rally good men to the cause. [What has caused this?  Our clergy abandoned their roles and the Church became in key ways “feminized”. Moreover, our form of Holy Mass was changed and devotions were abandoned.  The result has been a weakening of Catholic identity which has devastated Catholic manhood.]

Bishop Olmsted explains that Catholic men are needed to conduct the “New Evangelization,” to re-introduce Christian principles in a society that has come to neglect them. He also cites the image offered by Pope Francis, of the Church as a “field hospital,” providing urgent care for those wounded by societal problems. [“Field hospital”… sure.  That’s where you do triage and you stop the bleeding fast.  Then you send the wounded soul on to the real facility where the more difficult work is done.  Furthermore, lot’s of the wound die in field hospitals.  So, while field hospital is a good reminder of one aspect of the Church, we need more.]

Reflecting on the complementarity of the sexes, the bishop calls for active resistance against “gender ideology” and a dedication to living out male virtues, particularly the virtues of fortitude and chastity.

Addressing the question of what it means to be a man, Bishop Olmsted reminds his readers of how Pontius Pilate referred to Jesus: Ecce homo– “Here is the man!” The bishop observes: “Only in Jesus Christ can we find the highest display of masculine virtue and strength that we need in our personal lives and in society itself.” [Sacrificial love in perfection.  He also got pretty angry, and properly so, and went into action.]

The bishop urges men to undertake a campaign of spiritual growth, advising regular prayer and use of the sacraments, [GO TO CONFESSION!] reading of Scripture, and unselfish service to wives and children. He recommends imitation of the great males saints. He cites the words of one of these models, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati: “To live without faith, without a patrimony to defend, without a steady struggle for truth – that is not living, but existing.”

In closing his apostolic exhortation, Bishop Olmsted calls readers’ attention to the scandal of Planned Parenthood’s involvement in the sale of fetal tissues. “We need to get off the sidelines and stand up for life on the front lines,” he writes, adding:

We need faith like that of our fathers who defended the children of previous generations and who gave up their own lives rather than abandon their faith in Christ. My sons and brothers, men of the Diocese of Phoenix, we need you to step into the breach!

God bless Bp. Olmsted.

Here is how his letter begins (PDF HERE):

I begin this letter with a clarion call and clear charge to you, my sons and brothers in Christ: Men, do not hesitate to engage in the battle that is raging around you, the battle that is wounding our children and families, the battle that is distorting the dignity of both women and men. This battle is often hidden, but the battle is real. It is primarily spiritual, but it is progressively killing the remaining Christian ethos in our society and culture, and even in our own homes.

The world is under attack by Satan, as our Lord said it would be (1 Peter 5:8-14). This battle is occurring in the Church herself, and the devastation is all too evident. Since AD 2000, 14 million Catholics have left the faith, parish religious education of children has dropped by 24%, Catholic school attendance has dropped by 19%, infant baptism has dropped by 28%, adult baptism has dropped by 31%, and sacramental Catholic marriages have dropped by 41%.[1] This is a serious breach, a gaping hole in Christ’s battle lines. While the Diocese of Phoenix may have fared better than these national statistics, the losses are staggering.

One of the key reasons that the Church is faltering under the attacks of Satan is that many Catholic men have not been willing to “step into the breach” – to fill this gap that lies open and vulnerable to further attack. [And a lot of catholics are actively working to widen the breach!] A large number have left the faith, and many who remain “Catholic” practice the faith timidly and are only minimally committed to passing the faith on to their children. Recent research shows that large numbers of young Catholic men are leaving the faith to become “nones” – men who have no religious affiliation. The growing losses of young Catholic men will have a devastating impact on the Church in America in the coming decades, as older men pass away and young men fail to remain and marry in the Church, accelerating the losses that have already occurred.

These facts are devastating. As our fathers, brothers, uncles, sons, and friends fall away from the Church, they fall deeper and deeper into sin, breaking their bonds with God and leaving them vulnerable to the fires of Hell. [Do I hear an “Amen!”?] While we know that Christ welcomes back every repentant sinner, the truth is that large numbers of Catholic men are failing to keep the promises they made at their children’s baptisms – promises to bring them to Christ and to raise them in the faith of the Church.

This crisis is evident in the discouragement and disengagement of Catholic men like you and me. In fact, this is precisely why I believe this Exhortation is needed, and it is also the reason for my hope, for God constantly overcomes evil with good. The joy of the Gospel is stronger than the sadness wrought by sin! A throw-away culture cannot withstand the new life and light that constantly radiates from Christ. So I call upon you to open your minds and hearts to Him, the Savior who strengthens you to step into the breach!

[…]

Please, God… would that more, nay rather, all Catholic bishops would write and speak like that.

Here is the speech from Shakespeare’s Henry V:

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead!
In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man,
As modest stillness and humility;
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger:
Stiffen the sinews, conjure up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favoured rage:
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let it pry through the portage of the head,
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o’erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O’erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill’d with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide;
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English,
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought,
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument.
Dishonour not your mothers: now attest,
That those whom you call’d fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture: let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game’s afoot:
Follow your spirit; and upon this charge,
Cry ‘God for Harry! England! and Saint George!’

Pope Francis meets with Kim Davis. The Left melts down.

The catholic Left are desperate to silence the so-called “culture warriors”, especially to squelch Catholics who uphold clear Catholic teaching in the public square.

You may have heard that during his visit to these USA Pope Francis is reported to have met privately with the “culture warrior” Kim Davis, the Christian, non-Catholic, county clerk in Kentucky who refuses to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.  She went to jail for a time rather than knuckle under.

We don’t know for sure what Pope Francis said in this private meeting, but Davis didn’t say that the Pope told her to stop fighting.  She wasn’t disappointed afterward.  Quite the opposite, it seems.

We also shouldn’t read too much into the meeting.  After all, Popes meet with people like Idi Amin Dada and Fidel Castro.  Those meetings don’t signal approval.  Popes meet with world leaders as well as long lines of unknown and then nearly instantly forgotten people all the time.

That said, someone inside the papal circle set up and approved the meeting with the non-Catholic Kim Davis. She wasn’t plucked at random out of the crowd.  Perhaps we can conclude that Pope Francis thinks we can’t cooperate or accept same-sex marriage and we must actively resist it.  That clearly is what some people are taking away from it.  Come to think of it, it is reasonable to believe that the Pope of Rome doesn’t not think that men should marry men and have sex with other.  Yes, that seems pretty reasonable.

Liberals are turning on Francis for this.

Take a look at the combox of the National Sodomitical Reporter (aka Fishwrap) which reprinted the ultra-liberal RNS David Gibson piece.  NSR is pro-sodomy (one of the peccata clamantia) a sin that crieth unto heaven for vengeance).  Therefore, they are pretty worked up over there about the meeting.

So far, no comment from the Wile E. Coyote of the liberal catholic media, although a combox under a recent posting is getting pretty shrill.

Not so, however, from another of the usual suspects, Jesuit James Martin at Amerika.  He protests muchly, in a loooong piece, that the meeting didn’t really mean very much at all.

It is clear that liberals didn’t like the meeting.

Meanwhile, Bill Donohue of the Catholic League has this to say:

The Catholic and secular Left are beside themselves. They thought they owned the pope, and now they are in a state of disbelief. If they don’t get what they want at the Synod next month, watch for them to turn on him with a vengeance. [True.  Yet I think that the Synod may be so inconclusive and vague that they will claim it as a victory.]

Charles P. Pierce at Esquire is calling the Holy Father’s meeting with Kim Davis “a sin against charity,” and the “dumbest thing this Pope has ever done.” Nice to know he acknowledges the existence of sin. But to say that it was “dumb” of the pope to meet with this heroine, or to characterize it as a “hamhanded blunder,” is to seriously misread Pope Francis. He is, after all, a real Catholic, not a “pretend Catholic” (the pope used this term this week to describe the Mayor of Rome, a gay marriage enthusiast).

Pierce is so despondent with the pope that he said the Davis meeting “undermines his pastoral message, and it diminishes his stature by involving him in a petty American political dispute. A secret meeting with a nutball?” It would be more accurate to say that the meeting elevates the pope’s stature with real Catholics. Not surprisingly, Pierce does not see calling Davis a “nutball” as “a sin against charity.”

Gay activist Michelangelo Signorile is ripping the pope as “a more sinister kind of politician,” one who “secretly supports hate.” Signorile has a reputation of being quite open about his brand of hate speech, so that may account for his aversion to secrets. It is driving him mad that the pope broke bread with this courageous woman, which is why he said the meeting “is only encouraging the bigots.” By “bigots” he means practically every man and woman who ever walked the face of the earth, up until the day before yesterday.

Bless the Holy Father for being so inclusive that he reached out to Kim Davis. If the “pretend Catholics” who consider themselves his base get nasty, they will be answered by the Catholic League.

Any way, those are some different views of the Kim Davis meeting.

UPDATE:

At WaPo fid this:

No more Mr. Cool Pope

By Alexandra Petri

Yes, the pope met with embattled anti-gay-marriage clerk Kim Davis.

She reported that he clasped her hands, asked her to pray for him and told her to “stay strong.” The Vatican confirmed that the meeting occurred but refused to comment on details.

So much for “he’s-not-a-regular-pope-he’s-a-cool-pope” mania.

What’s really surprising is that we’re surprised.

The fact that we were expecting something different from Pope Francis says what a remarkable job he’s doing of making us forget that he is, not to put too fine a point on it, the pope.

ASK FATHER: If 50% of marriages are invalid, how do I know if my marriage is valid?

12_07_10_marriage_01From a reader…

QUAERITUR:

If approximately 50% of current “Catholic” marriages are actually invalid, how do I know if my marriage is valid? I was a cafeteria Catholic at the time of the wedding, husband was unbaptized. We got a dispensation from the bishop to marry. Husband has since been baptized and confirmed and we are practicing Catholics. Do we need to do something else to “validate” our marriage?

I am tempted to tell folks like this (and Tribunals around the country are getting calls like this over and over) call Pope Francis and ask him.

But instead…

Canon 1060 is an important canon. It states that marriage enjoys the favor of the law (matrimonium gaudet favore iuris). A shorthand phrase often used by canonists states that marriage has “the presumption of validity.”

The Church maintains that, unless proven otherwise, a marriage that is properly celebrated is precisely what it appears to be: a marriage. Only after considerable evidence provides moral certitude that there was something invalid at the start, is this presumption of validity overturned.

Sadly, a number of ecclesiastics who should know better have recklessly spouted their personal beliefs about the demographics of marriage and invalidity.

Whatever their beliefs, the position of the Church remains that marriage is a binding institution, lasting for life, contracted by a man and a woman capable of doing so, who exchange consent according to the proper form of marriage.

You can rest assured in the Church’s belief in the validity of your marriage.

If you have a significant reason for doubting the validity of your marriage, then contact your diocesan marriage tribunal and ask to speak to a canonist. After you explain your situation, if indeed there is something to be concerned about canonically, the canonist at the tribunal will be able to direct you to a good priest who can help you with anything that needs some work.
