News of Bp. Martino?

I understand that Bp. Martino of Scranton, who has been a good pro-life, pro-Catholic identity, voice may be stepping down for reasons of poor health.

It would be a work of mercy to pray for His Excellency’s health!

My best friend is a priest of the Diocese of Scranton. He mentioned such swirling rumors to me a few weeks ago, but the cause was not illness but that His Excellency was moving to another assignment, though the actual assignment varied by the rumor. (As any cleric can attest, there are few groups more gossipy than priests. Maybe seminarians…) I haven’t talked to my friend this week yet, but I’ll ask for an update.

Rumors I have heard, likewise from clerics within the Diocese of Scranton are that he is likely to be moved soon. The reasons are the the continual deficit that the Diocese is racking up.

As someone who works for the Diocesan school system, its not hard to see why: between the 07-08 school year and the 08-09 school year, the administrative costs for the Schools Office jumped over $3mil…and it wasn’t salaries as they had been frozen for a couple of years. When asked what caused the jump, the finance person presenting the information said “I don’t know.” Couple that with the abuse shell-outs that were awarded years ago, and you’ve got a sure fire excuse for deficits.

Its a shame really, because His Excellency has mandated a truly awesome theology curriculum, including celebration of the Sacrifice of the Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. In addition, he has really been instrumental in incorporating chastity into religious formation at all levels.
