What kind of dumb is this?

This is so weird that, at first, I thought it was a joke.

We find this at Protect The Pope.

Dissenting on homosexuality Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP is a keynote speaker at Dublin’s 2014 Divine Mercy Conference

Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP, well-known liberal and dissenter, has bizarrely been chosen to be one of the keynote speakers at Dublin’s [Ireland] 2014 International Conference on Divine Mercy. Fr Radcliffe openly dissents on the Church’s teaching on homosexuality and Holy Communion for the divorced and re-married. Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP frequently celebrated Mass for the gay dissent group the Soho Masses Pastoral Council. During the reign of Pope Benedict XVI Fr Timothy Radcliffe was stopped from speaking at the General Assembly of the Catholic development agencies. Fr Radcliffe is well known for his liberal positions on morality, including his public opposition to the Church’s teaching on homosexuality.

The Divine Mercy Conference website states:

Divine Mercy Conference 2014

The first International Conference of Divine Mercy was held in the R.D.S. over 23 years ago. We celebrate our 23rd conference 2014 in the knowledge that Sister Faustina is now Saint Faustina. The theme of the first conference was “Mercy Our Mission”. The theme and the speakers were the product of much prayer and discernment by a committee of men and women gathered together in Eucharistic adoration under the spiritual direction of Fr. Cathal Price.’

Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP will be speaking on both Saturday and Sunday.

A selection of Fr Radcliffe’s writings expressing dissent from the Church’s teaching:

Fr Radcliffe gave the following contribution to the Church of England ‘s review of homosexuality and gay marriage:

Fr Radcliffe OP expands the meaning of fertility to include gay sex

Yes, poor choice. A few years back Fr Timothy Radcliffe was the Master General of the Dominican Order. If they didn’t know about him in any particular detail, a lot of Catholics would assume he was okay. He is the kind of priest who knows what words to use to at least be ambiguous about his dissent. Any believing Catholic who sees much of what he has to say would definitely get a sense of which way he leans though. He was/is well loved by dissident Dominicans!

The current Dominican Master General strikes me as being better. I sent him a copy of my book ( http://www.fathermazzuchellisociety.org/sinsinawa-dominicans/a-report-on-the-sinsinawa-dominicans-today/ ), but didn’t get a reply. Just today I received a thank you for the book from the Pontifical Academy for Life which included their Christmas card, in Italian. :-)

    Gaydar alarming on red alert!

  3. Cathy says:

His statements – dumb. His selection as a keynote speaker – dumber.

Is he going to be forced to make an oath to the dogma of the Church and to obey the Holy Father?

Fr Radcliffe is free to speak at any conference, as indeed, is anyone.

However, if he preaches that sex, or whatever, between two persons of the same sex, which by definition is outside of a valid marriage between a man and a woman, is acceptable, and if he advocates Communion for those who have been divorced from a valid marriage and subsequently re-married, is acceptable, both categories of people being in an objective state of Mortal Sin, then he is preaching heresy.

If he willingly and knowingly persists in this, he incurs formal and automatic (latae sententiae) excommunication from the Catholic Church.

I assume that anyone who suspects that he will express such views and has done nothing to dissuade him, or who deliberately and knowingly assists him to express such views, such as organisers of conferences with foreknowledge, also risks excommunication.

Well, when you’ve met one Dominican, you’ve met one Dominican. But sometimes, one is enough.

  7. robtbrown says:

Believe it or not, Fr Radcliffe was a huge improvement over his predecessor, Fr Damian Byrne.

    Wicked dumb?

  9. C N says:

If he is using fertility and “gay sex” in the same sentence without the word NOT between them, someone needs to send that man a dictionary. With the word fertility bookmarked and highlighted.

  10. Adam Welp says:

I mean no disrespect to Fr. Radcliffe as he is an ordained priest of the Catholic Church, but based on the pic posted, he looks like a cross between Fr. Ted Crilly and Fr. Jack Hackett from the UK sitcom Father Ted.

  11. Pat says:

Not only was he the Master of the Order of Preachers but he lasted long, from 1992-2001. I wonder what the other British Dominicans, Kerr and Nichols, think.

  12. I don’t think Fr Timothy is the problem here.

The theme and the speakers were the product of much prayer and discernment by a committee of men and women gathered together in Eucharistic adoration under the spiritual direction of Fr. Cathal Price.

There’s your problem right there. Fr Cathal Price.

That is the term of office for the Master General. As I said before, he was an improvement over Fr Damian Byrne, who was considered anti-intellectual.

Frs Timothy Radcliffe and Aidan Nichols disagree on almost everything.

I’m not even sure I’ve heard of Fr. Radcliffe giving any talks on Divine Mercy, especially in relation to the devotion as expanded and shall we say, rejuvenated by St. Faustina…
