NYC EXILE – DAY 5: Lions and Hot Dogs and Mass!

Today is the Feast of St Mark.  What else does one do but go to the Met to hunt for images of St Mark?

These guys were back!

I’m in a bit of a hurry so forgive me if I add descriptions later.

First things first… lunch.  That doesn’t need much ‘splanin’.

Processional Cross, Italian, 15th c., probably Sienese.

Processional Cross, Spanish, 15th c. probably from Aragon.  Silver with enamel.

A view of Venice and, therefore, San Marco, where the remains of the Evangelist are entombed, by Francesco Guardi.

A 14th c. pulpit from the workshop of Giovanni Pisano.

Back to Venice for a moment.  We all recognize Canaletto.

Reliquary Cross, Italian, made from c. 1366-1400.

We found a few more but these are representative.

More later.

Oooops forgot this … by Vivarini, probably St. Mark, the patron of Venice, dated to 1473.

Lions and Hot Dogs and Mass! OH MY!!

  2. Supertradmum says:

I have always wanted to go to Venice and have never been able to do so, yet. t
The Canaletto paintings remind me of Brideshead Revisited.

  3. Charles E Flynn says:

Lions and hot dogs and mass could be a new triple threat.

  4. Gerhard says:

Well, you certainly “hit the [M]ark” there Father! Thank you for sharing this very uplifting sacred art. We certainly need some uplifting these days.

  5. If I had nothing else to do, or if I could fit it into my schedule, I would attend Mass at a parish named for St. Mark. The one in my diocese is about an hour and a half from home and nowhere near work. I had to settle for St. Aidan, which also has the letter “a” in it just like Mark. I’m not sure if Manhattan has a parish named for St. Mark.

  6. Venerator Sti Lot says:

If that’s St. Christopher Cynocephalos peeking out above that engaged pilaster, he has a longer nose than I’m accustomed to.

  7. Filipino Catholic says:

April 25 isn’t just the Feast of St. Mark of course. Was it too much to hope there was at least one procession and/or Mass of Rogation that day in the Big Apple? God knows we could do with bringing back the Greater Litanies, considering all the messed up weather going on around the world.

  8. cstei says:

I am off to New York City tomorrow. I am attending a taping of The Chew and then I don’t know what. A great place to be exiled!

  9. How long will you be in the area?

A friend of mine (a convert) saw you at Holy Innocents and I mused how he actually got to see the person responsible for my interest in the Church’s traditions before I did.

  10. No More Tambourines says:

Nothing like a good hot dog with sauerkraut from a street vendor. With lunches often costing me ten to 20 dollars sometime it’s the best option in Manhattan.
