ALERT! ALERT! Poll on ordination of women needs attention

On the website of the Cincinnati Enquirer there was an article about the disciplining of a woman religious who works in for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.  She is in favor or, working for, the ordination of women.  Archbishop Pilarcyck is telling her to knock it off.

The Enquirer posted a POLL for readers to say if they think women should be ordained.

Never mind the fact that this is impossible.  A woman can no more be ordained as a priest than an… eggplant, or giraffe.

The Church, faithful to Christ, has no authority to ordain women.  This is the Church’s infallible teaching.

At the time of this writing, the poll is leaning 75% in favor of ordination of women.

I ask you… do you WDTPRSers think that will be a good outcome?

So… do something about this!

Read that article and then….

VOTE…NO! VOTE..NO! VOTE..NO!

Do you have a blog?  Post on this.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I Voted…

  2. Hamburglar says:

Wouldn’t anyone answering “yes” be a heretic?

  3. Thanks for the poll, Father! I voted “No,” but the “Yeas” have it by some &1 71%.

It’s strange, but I know of a priest who believes that female ordination will be granted during the next pontificate. I almost blew a gasket hwen I heard that.

After all, the Anglicans have ordained women and look where it got them?

  4. Jayna says:

I just voted, but I am not going to allow myself to be sucked into the comments on that site. I can’t stand it when non-Catholics pontificate on what the Catholic Church should and should not be doing. Especially when they question how women can support a religion that supposedly oppresses us (it’s particularly rich when a man says it). I’m a woman in the Church and I trust in her wisdom. How could I possibly feel as though I am stuck in an oppressive patriarchal system when it is the word of my Holy Mother Church that tells me that priests must be male?

  5. JohnMa says:

Today, as I walked by the campus ministry bulletin board (at Georgetown) I saw a flyer that called on students to intern for the Women’s Ordination Conference. I tore down the flyer and made sure that my opinion was made known to the Priest and Sister.

  6. Gus says:

In the past 15 minutes the vote has changed to now be 26% against; from 75% for originally to <70% for now. Good work.

Do you have a blog? Post on this.

Even though my blog is modest in both size and traffic, it’s done.

  9. Jordanes says:

Here are the results after I cast my vote in favor of Christ’s doctrine that men only may receive Holy Orders:

  10. Scott W. says:

After all, the Anglicans have ordained women and look where it got them?

Indeed. I’m trying to figure progressives out. Are they willfully ignoring the piles of rubble that are mainline Protestant denominations as they ordain women, (with approval of abortion and homosexual acts not far behind), or do they want the Church destroyed in the same way?

  11. MQ says:

I just so happened to have read the article on another site before coming here. With that being said, I did send along a kind E-mail to the Bishop to offer my encouragement on him making a decision led by The Holy Spirit. Also voted no.

Vote duly cast. Thank you very much for the heads up Father. I wouldn’t even read the Comments section, since it’s been a long day and I don’t need to be any more irritated than I already am tonight … ;-)

  18. Jordanes says:

Hamburglar asked, “Wouldn’t anyone answering “yes” be a heretic?”

    Yes, they would. Ordinatio Sacerdotalis

  19. Tina in Ashburn says:

I voted nope, thanks for the alert. we are still behind.

Don’t they know? No matter how many times you pronounce over someone “you are a frog” “you are a frog” they remain a human being.

Until women grow, uh, you know…uhm parts…no ordination will ‘take’.

  20. Lori Ehrman says:

    I voted NO….

  23. Mike says:

“Should the Church allow women to be ordained as priests?”

The poll question sadly misses an important point and frames the question incorrectly… the Church does not have the ability to ordain women as priests. (Ordinatio Sacerdotalis)

  24. Fr. John Mary says:

I just got back from Evening Prayer; thank you for the notice.
Praised by Jesus Christ, His Holy Mother, and Saint Joseph our holy Faith is not determined by polls…I cannot think of what our Church would be like if this was the case.

  25. drea916 says:

Another old lady wanting to be a priest….
I’m a 30 years old woman and I stand by the Church’s teaching. I’ve heard ordaining women compared to baptising with motor oil.

  26. Konichiwa says:

Wow. Even here there are trolls.
    We’re picking up! about 54:42, Yes:No, now.

  28. thomas tucker says:

    Vote cast.
    After all, Roma locuta est.

  29. St Chad says:

This is more “Fruit of the Council”. The Church (the bishops assembled) created this problem. In 1965, the Council Fathers told women religious that they had it all wrong: that their cloisters and convents, and manner of dress, and way of life were outdated; and that they needed to (no, they MUST) go back and re-invent themselves and rediscover their true ‘charism’. They were encouraged to fully participate in the ‘renewal of the Church’. Well, they did just that. Now, many of them want to be priestesses. Who is surprised? Moreover, they have the active encouragement of countless priests and laity [and the odd bishop] who themselves support the idea of women’s ordination. I wish it were true that this Sister of Charity was part of the lunatic fringe; but, sadly, she most certainly is not.

  30. In about 1:24 minutes we shifted this over 30%.

  31. FrCharles says:

Mike’s point raises the real problem: that the world does not understand the nature of the Church, and why the poll is meaningless. Nevertheless, as a sign that there are those of us who care about being Catholic, this drama tonight makes me proud to be a WDTPRSer.

  32. jennywren says:

this…is…just…depressing….did you read some of those comments? I guess the only good thing is that you can explain some of it away as being non-catholic readers who have no clue what the Church teaches and why. I have had it up to “here” with people who bash the Church without having the faintest idea of the teachings. BLECH!
Father, I think we need a “good news” post!

  33. Tina in Ashburn says:

Father, then these misguided folks are living in a fairy tale?

    I’m just sayin…

  34. Konichiwa says:

I agree, Fr. Charles. It’s a stupid poll. But I’ve got competitiveness in my blood! Gotta turn the poll around!

I feel like a dead Chicagoan; I voted twice.

  39. FrCharles says:

Thank you for your blessing, Father! In two years less five days of priesthood, this ministry has been for me a tremendous source of encouragement, learning, and confidence. Let’s stand up for the Catholic and apostolic faith!

  40. Mitchell NY says:

Are these women crazy? Why would anyone want to destroy the foundations of any religious organization that has been around for centuries. What good does that serve the world to destroy something that is one of the only institutions that has the power to unite and bring peace to the world today? Do they realize how many people they are hurting? I can not believe how selfish it is. I mean there are things in the Church that I may think that if changed would make my life easier too, but I would never try to undermine the foundations of the Catholic Church. Fuel to the fire was added with the approval of Altar girls. Convents are emptying at alarming rates, why not go there and serve God? It is a different capacity albeit without the spotlight, but is that what it all boils down to? Does everyone have to be President? Imagine 400 Speakers of the House and no Congress. I cast my vote, no……

  41. Clinton says:

Thanks for the heads up, Father. Went to the site, read the article, cast my vote. I also did one other thing — I went to the website
for the Archdiocese and sent a brief e-mail to the Archbishop to thank him.

After the episcopal resignations in Scranton, I worry that our fine priests and bishops who fight for the Faith might not be aware how
much their work is appreciated. So, I’ve resolved that whenever it’s possible I’ll express my thanks when I hear of a pastor defending
our Church. Seems like the least I could do in the Year of the Priest.

  42. Dr. K says:

The Cleansing Fire blog of the Diocese of Rochester has joined in this crusade to support the Archbishop in his time of need. We can not allow polls and the media to attack this man and our Church. The +Martino situation makes it all the more clear how necessary our prayers and support are for clergy when they stand up for orthodoxy.

  57. Roland de Chanson says:

Oops. Fr. Z beat me to it!

  58. The poll is now in favor of NOT ordaining women, by about 1 percent.

Best quote I ever head on so-called women’s “ordination,” from an Opus Dei priest: “A horse has a better chance of being ordained than a woman.”

    Best. Quote. Ever.

  59. Roland de Chanson says:

Actually I have just now had a prick of conscience, thinking on the legacy of the recently deceased Senator Kennedy. I am going back and changing my vote to Yes. I think women should be ordained, provided of course they are in a committed lesbian marriage.

  60. Franciscanmd says:

“Akers said she was saddened the archbishop gave her an ultimatum when a public conversation about their differences would, in her view, be far more productive. Various polls in the past 10 years show that about 60 percent of American Catholics favor allowing women to become priests.”

  66. Sedgwick says:

Thanks for the heads up, Father. At the moment the no’s are almost to 54%. What is even more amazing about the WDTPRS-generated turn-around in the vote is that +Pilarczyk took the action that he did. This is the man who allows VOTF to meet on Church property here in Cincy, and who has spent most of his career trying to sneak the homosexual agenda into the Church. Also the man who calls the return to tradition a “liturgical winter.”

  67. Bruce says:

Will the “progressives” drop the call for women’s ordination now that the majority are against it? :)

Obviously I voted NO, for plenty of reasons, first and foremost because HMC doesn’t have authority to ordain women, as previously mentioned. Moreover, as a PK (in Protestant lingo,a preacher’s kid [my mom]) in the Lutheran tradition, I firmly believe that women should not be ordained period anywhere. After my mom’s “ordination,” it seems that all my mom’s time is taken up with church and church issues, and yes, there’s plenty of church politics. Sure my mom’s “ordained,” but now especially since I’m a Catholic convert who’s gone to WYD ’08 in Sydney, should she be, a whole-hearted NO. I am getting soooo tired of hearing these progressives airing their cases with this when it’s a non-issue. Even my former priest-chaplain (who’s pretty progressive himself) is against women’s ordinations. Thank God for the JPII generation of priests coming up, we need all the help we can get. Kudos to +Pilcarczyk for taking the action that he did. I’ll add him to my intentions tonight. BTW, the Nos are up to just over 55 % Yeah!!!

  71. brianwalden says:

It’s frustrating to see so many comments from people who are protesting against something they don’t understand. Many of their objections are good ones, they’re just not the reasons why the Church doesn’t (and can’t) ordain women.

Anyway I’m all for equality, I think the Church should start ordaining women when She starts allowing men to have babies.

  72. ghp95134 says:

  73. jt83 says:

    I voted.

What is disappointing, though not surprising, is that her order will not back up the Church:

Sister Barbara Hagedorn, president of the Sisters of Charity, offered support for Akers on Wednesday and described her as a gifted teacher and tireless advocate for social justice. But she said the religious order, which is based in Delhi Township, would not become involved in the dispute.

Cowardice on the part of Sr Hagedorn?

I voted no. I found Sr. Akers’ comment in the article rather silly. She is quoted, “For me, it’s an issue of justice within the church.” Is it really an issue of justice within the church that women aren’t ordained?!? I guess God was being unjust when he created women to be the ones who could bear children and then subsequently asked a woman and not a man to bear his only son. I guess God was being equally unjust when he sent a son and not a daughter to be the savior of the world. I suppose Jesus himself was unjust when he chose only men to be his apostles and built his church on Peter. Even a modicum of theological study would counter the theory of injustice in a male-only tradition as Sr. Akers asserts.

By the way, the “no” votes are growing!

This poll is a no brainer. Whenever any Pope has been questioned on the subject he says in effect: I have not the power to allow women priests”. After all, Christ had three years to appoint His priests and He chose men only. Does somebody out there want to correct Christ??

Alas, in the grab for the power of service, the dusty old truism seems to have been overlooked (again):

“*She* who rocks the cradle . . .

    [rescues the aborted;
    harbors the afflicted;
    houses, feeds, clothes, and loves the orphaned;
    educates the young;
    nurses the sick and injured;
    rescues the threatened;
    supports the weary;
    comforts the dying; and
    prays for the needful]

    . . . . rules the world.”

“Can a woman forget her infant, so as not to have pity on the son of her womb? and if she should forget, yet will not I forget thee.” Is. 49:15.

Isaias does not say, “if she should forget, yet will I make of her a priest for thee.”

  86. JARay says:

    A Few Thoughts
In the matter of the Ordination of women what if the liberals had their way and the Church reversed its declaration that She had no authority to ordain women?
What would be the implications of this decision?
I see this as being the end of the Catholic Church.
    Why?
Well, the Church teaches that She alone has the authority to make a pronouncement on this matter. I can quote the words of Jesus to St. Peter…”Whatever you shall bind on earth, is bound also in heaven etc. etc”. And further words of Jesus “Behold I am with you even unto the end of the world”.
Now, the Church has already made a pronouncement on the matter of female Ordination and this has been declared as binding on all the Faithful.
Take for one moment the grievous sin of perjury. When someone takes an oath that what they are about to say, is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth and calls upon Almighty God as their witness to this truth; if then, they proceed to lie, they are guilty of calling on God Himself to witness their lie as being the truth. This is a very serious offence to God, the author of truth. Hence, the seriousness of the sin of perjury.
If the Church were to reverse this binding declaration on Her lack of power to ordain women, then the Church would be declaring that She had got it wrong. This means that the Holy Spirit has got it wrong, God Himself has been in error. The author of truth has given support to an untruth. This would therefore be a declaration that God is not infallible. This would be a sin against the Holy Spirit, and Jesus himself said that a sin against the Holy Spirit can never be forgiven, neither in this world nor in the next.
The Church would have committed a sin very similar to perjury.
The Church herself then would have committed the unforgiveable sin, of sinning against the Holy Spirit.
This means that the Church is not holy, that God is not God and the Church is indeed finished!
Perhaps if those soft thinking, or unthinking, people actually looked at the implications of such a reversal of the clear declaration that She has no power to ordain women, can be made to see what they are actually implying and hoping for, is simply the total, complete and utter destruction of the Church herself.
That is something which God has promised will never be allowed to happen.

When I was working for the Church and going for my Master’s of Theology at a very liberal college, the priest came up to me and said “This is wonderful, you may be our first Catholic woman priest.” I told him, “No thanks, I want to remain a Roman Catholic”. End of conversation.

  89. Henry Edwards says:

Roland de Chanson: I think women should be ordained, provided of course they are in a committed lesbian marriage.

Then perhaps you will be happy to know of my informal observation that a majority of wimmenpriest wanabees are, indeed, partners in committed lesbian relationships.

  90. chironomo says:

There are several comments on the article at their site that have begun to wonder why the poll shows that a majority of Catholics say “NO” to female ordination. They seem perplexed that this would be so….

There are also many comments that display the sorry condition of Catholics today…it seems that the “Church as Popular Democracy” view is so prevalent that it will probably cause a serious crash at some point in the future. Many comments call this being “exclusive”…as though EVERYBODY should be Catholic regardless of what they believe or what they profess. If the church doesn’t accept them, it is being “exclusive”. Unfortunately, this is where we are…for now.

  91. chironomo says:

That’s the danger of including a poll in an article that cites polls…

End of the Church, no. Obviously there would be institutional chaos on par with the Arian split and the Western Schism, but unless it’s the end of the world, it wouldn’t be the end of the Church.

Good for you, JohnMa, in tearing down the flyer about the ‘ordination conference’ at Georgetown!

You can see from the photo of the so-called ‘sister’ that her time on earth will be coming to an end…the ‘ticktock ticktick’ of the biological clock.

Real “Sisters’ such as the Nashville and Ann Arbor Dominicans rule! And they’re the ones that are flourishing!

Akers, who entered the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati in 1960, and holds a doctorate in feminist theology from the Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Mass.

Not that I am in any sort of dissent with you or the magisterium, Father, but what are you trying to accomplish by suggesting mass voting an online poll that will in any case have no effect?

The point, I would suggest mpalardy, is to keep at least this poll from falling into this category:

I voted NO several days ago. I’ve noticed on this thread that some folks (Roland de Chanson, Hamburglar, Catholic Community Organizer)
are advocating skewing the results by voting more than once. If that’s possible, then what was already a poll with questionable methodology
has been rendered utterly useless. Those of us who vote NO in this poll are on the side of what’s right, and stuffing the ballot box should
be beneath us. Leave that behavior to the folks at ACORN.

On another note — have you been to the comments section on the Enquirer’s article? It’s a vortex of half-baked ideation and bigotry.
Not for weak stomachs. The one bright spot is that if this is a battle of wits then the heterodox are unarmed.

  128. Bill in Texas says:

I voted No. And won’t go back to look at the comments, some of which would surely put me in a frustrated, angry funk for hours, if not for days.
