I really can’t understand this. It’s like the “Twilight Zone” on steroids.
Is this not the same organization which is telling the Irish that their Oct 2 (re)referendum on the Lisbon Treaty will have no negative impact on the Irish people’s right to essentially retain the same sorts of laws as are being decried when passed in Lithuania?
Sounds like the kind of bait and switch going on here in the USA!
John Enright,
Well, but the Twilight Zone was entertaining!
The European Union and Parliament needs desperately to be abolished. It’s been doing far more harm than good for quite some time. It is mostly a force for evil these days, opposed to the things most essential to mankind’s welfare.
Mostly disturbing is that the Irish hierarchy apparently support the Lisbon Treaty and are trying to weaken opposition to it, despite the fact that once Ireland signs onto the treaty, it will only be a matter of time until Ireland is forced to legalise all abortion and to promote sexual perversity and the redefinition/abolition of the institution of marriage.
In better news, the Ukraine recently denied Elton John permission to adopt a child, citing his age and unmarried status. And, in order to avoid any ambiguity, the spokesman mentioned that, no, the Ukraine does not recognise ‘civil partnerships’. How much longer this will last, however, is another question.
As these countries fail, one by one, is there ANYwhere in the world that is still considered a Catholic country? I am due to graduate next year and am seriously considering dual citizenship somewhere. I can’t keep up with all the atrocities.
Jordanes,
I did see a notice where one bishop (saying he spoke with the support of the Primate) said that one could vote in good conscience in favor of the Lisbon Treaty. He did not opine on whether one could do so in one’s right mind!
To mpm: Point well taken. LOL! I’ll try not to insult good science fiction series again!
Anyone who thinks that the EU won’t push same-sex marriage on all members, little by little, over the next few decades is denying the obvious.
Religious liberty issues are not far behind. The worst is that these trends threaten to erode the Church from within, rather than come down hard on top (like Rome did and the Soviet Union did), which the Church has proven adept at withstanding. Erosion from within is a much more devastating prospect.
And yet the pope and curia support the EU and the UN. When again is the next Peter’s Pence collection?
I’m sure the USCCB will, along with Cardinal Martino, support the European Union on this effort. After all, Bush would have supported Lithuania. Ergo, these left-wing loons will support the anti-Christian European Union. I think it’s time, Catholics begin to think about a Jihad of its own, as a measure of “ecumenical support” for our Muslim “separated brethen.” Tom
“Surprisingly, Malta’s delegation, including its two EPP representatives, voted as a bloc against Lithuania.”
Malta, too? :-(
Recently the BBC has had a week of homosexual promotion, though it is never far from the surface in any event. Including, in its day-time schedule (13:45 – 14:15), a ‘soap’ based on a surgery where one of the doctors was in bed with a male and boasting about ‘gay’ sex in the afternoon. There has also been an exhibition at The National Gallery of portraits of “Gay Icons”.
The BBC has also been endlessly promoting, per a natural history guru, the problem of overpopulation, not to mention ‘climate change’. Islam also gets pride of place, with endless eulogisation of the compassionate nature of that faith.
Anyone who thinks that the EU won’t push same-sex marriage on all members, little by little, over the next few decades is denying the obvious.

I don’t doubt that theu Euro Parliament will try, but I think there’s enough sovereign spirit among Euro nations to resist. IMHO, the question is whether each nation will will independently OK same sex marriage.
It seems that in the late 50’s and 60’s those who were running the Church misread the signs of the times: Instead of a New Pentecost, a New Calvary was on the way. Perhaps they should have kept the following text in mind:
John 15:18-21
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, `A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me.
Good thought, robtbrown-especially in the Scripture quote!
And I’m glad that the Ukraine showed some guts and told Elton John that he can’t adopt a child!
Interesting enough, will Turkey be obliged to enforce such laws once it enters the EU?
The Muslims here don’t like at all the same sex behaviors.
“Mostly disturbing is that the Irish hierarchy apparently support the Lisbon Treaty and are trying to weaken opposition to it…”
Not so, Jordanes. They have not come out in favour of it in public, although sometimes the impression has been given that the feelings of a majority of them towards the EU are rather akin to what those of the USCCB are alleged to be vis-a-vis the Democratic Party.
However the situation on the ground is that in many church porches and news-stands you are more likely to find a variety of generally anti-Lisbon literature, for example the very good free newspaper “Alive” published by the Irish Dominicans.

I don’t know why the Vatican is so blind to the danger of a union (sic. Empire) of the people who gave the world – racism, imperialism, colonialism, Fascism, Nazism and Communism. Who can blame Ireland or poor little Malta if they “go with the flow” after the Vatican has already capitulated to United Europe.

I think it will happen according to the same blueprint in the US. The EP and the various human rights courts will slowly add protected class status protections for people who engage in homosexual behavior, until there are so many such things that domestic courts can claim that there has been a sea change that requires genderless marriage statutes. Or, they will require that one nation respect another nation’s same sex marriage. There is no Defense of Marriage Act in the EU, but I’ll bet there are some provisions that allow the EU courts to require states to recognize each other’s laws and contracts–thus spreading it all over the continent.
Resistance to creeping degeneracy is a necessary and sometimes painful stand to take. Huzzah for Lithuania.
I believe the Slovak Republic has been in similar cross hairs before, as have the Poles. I guess years of repression gives one a bit of sang froid when it comes to standing up for one’s beliefs.
My only gripe with the article is the use of “Slovakian”, that is a misnomer, it is properly and proudly “Slovak”. Madame Zaborska is a Slovak, not a Slovakian.

So, jaykay, the Irish bishops are saying a) it is not against any teaching of the Church to vote for Lisbon, or against it; AND b) they are not taking any official position one way or the other?
If so, that was my understanding from the news piece I saw.
I sense that that is also the way JPII and BVXI view the whole thing. Who knows what “the Vatican” thinks? Neither the Vatican, nor Switzerland, is a member-state.
jaykay,
I also realized the folks at Alive! must be orthodox when I saw the following on their masthead:
I think same sex marriage may not happen in the long term and only temporary, the Muslims are becoming a powerful minority because of future potential of swaying elections, 5% now in most Western countries, if immigration stopped now in 20 years it will be 10% assuming each family has on average 4 kids. In 40 years it will be 20% using same equation. That is a good size minority. Look at the “Black vote” or “Hispanic vote” or the historical “Catholic vote” in USA for example, their numbers will give them power to resist the brave new world morals, I actually welcome it (not that it affects me since Ukraine is free of EU and besides right now i live in USA – how long remains to be seen) because it brings some common morality and allies of convenience to fight the radical gay agenda.
If the Muslims of the new Europe follow a more secular model they will be no problems, in Ukraine (Crimea) and in Russia the Tatars are full integrated Muslim citizens and dont do suicide bombings.
Now these are all conservative estimates and best case. Real life example is Kosovo – in late 20th century the Muslim Albanians jumped from 75% to over 90% while the Serbs dropped over 10% and the rest unfortunate history. They say history repeats itself, sadly.
