CNS: Catholic Colleges Urge HHS to Rescind ‘Direct Violation’ of Religious Liberty

From the Cardinal Newman Society:

Faithful Catholic Colleges Urge HHS to
Rescind ‘Direct Violation’ of Religious Liberty

Joined together by their firm commitment to strong Catholic identity and fidelity to Catholic teaching, 19 Catholic colleges, universities and online programs partnered today with The Cardinal Newman Society and Catholic faculty in a last-chance appeal to the Obama administration to rescind its illegal health insurance mandate and regulations that violate religious freedom.

This is the second such appeal organized by The Cardinal Newman Society’s Center for the Advancement of Catholic Higher Education and authored by attorney Matthew Bowman of the Alliance Defense Fund. Joining the Center and 18 colleges in the letter is the Society of Catholic Social Scientists, a national association of Catholic professors and scholars.

What a wonderful list of true Catholic colleges! What a scandal the absence of the big name “Catholic” colleges!! Where are Georgetown and Notre Dame? Where are Boston College and Holy Cross? Where are the bishops who allow these entirely secular institutions to abuse the name “Catholic?”

A big oooRAH! for Holy Spirit College.

“It is, sir, as I have said, a small college, and yet there are those who love her.”

    Not a single Jesuit college.

    jimsantafe,
In case you missed the announcement, Notre Dame and other Catholic organizations have filed lawsuits against the HHS mandate.

  5. Moro says:

I’m glad to see this along with the lawsuits filed last week. I had previously stated that Franciscan University’s refusal to offer student coverage was not enough, but I failed to acknowledge such a suit might be in the works. I’m glad to see lots of Catholic Schools and diocese are stepping up to the plate and fighting this unjust policy. Too bad not all of them are.

    jimsantafe, ndmom,

As far as I can tell, Note Dame has been handling this issue quite well and deserves both praise and (prayer) support.
