Wherein Fr. Z praises Jamie Manson of the Fishwrap

Over at Fishwrap, Jamie Manson deserves our praise.

Are are shocked?

Our Jamie seems to be the only one over there who isn’t in denial about Pope Francis!

See her piece (I am not making this up):

Time to face facts: Pope Francis agrees with the doctrinal assessment of LCWR

Take away quote:

The similarities between Francis’ quotes and Müller’s statement demonstrate clearly that Müller’s talking points are coming directly from the pope.

She gets it!

Jamie is the first one to cross the finish line among the contributors to the National Schismatic Reporter. It took her a while, but she did it.

Fr Z Kudos to Jamie!

I must say, I really enjoyed reading that article.

Also from Fishwrap comes this article with a similar premise:

    http://ncronline.org/news/global/vatican-threatens-jesuit-theologian-india-censure

The take-away quote from this one is: “The Vatican is investigating a Jesuit theologian from India for allegedly espousing unorthodox beliefs, raising new questions about whether Pope Francis — the first Jesuit pope — is in fact moving the Catholic church in a new direction.”

  2. LeeF says:

Manson said: “Women religious, on the other hand, believe their work and their faith demand that they remain radically obedient first and foremost to the voice of God.”

What they don’t realize is that the voice they are listening to is that of the idol of their own understanding apart from the Church, that they have fashioned. The intellectual equivalent of a golden calf. And like the Israelites who worshiped the golden calf, they are actually disobeying God. You can’t reject God’s message conveyed by the legitimate messengers of God with a claim of obeying God Himself. Just as Cardinal Mueller said re reception of communion by the divorced and remarried that one cannot appeal to God’s mercy against the structure He set up by His Church to convey such mercy.

Naturally in matters of personal conduct and prudential judgment it can be different, but not regarding doctrine, which Pope Francis emphasized in the ordination Mass the other day is not the doctrine of the priests (or the laity), but God’s doctrine.

I’m pleased she’s in touch with reality (at least on this topic).

  4. Elizabeth D says:

“Müller’s talking points are coming directly from the pope” Indeed, good for her. This is considerably likely to be very literally true. Muller talking it through with the Pope and then going to LCWR with points the Pope directly affirmed is definitely the way to go for Muller to make sure he and PF are on the very same page. The very frankness of Muller is likely reflective of private frankness of the Holy Father on this topic.

  5. Pnkn says:

It seems that she is “in touch with reality” only so far as recognizing that Pope Francis and the CDF agree. She’s not in touch with the reality of Catholic doctrine because she states that she finds herself saddened by the agreement between the pope and the CDF.
Her website states that she’s a Presbyterian. It’s not at all clear to me how someone who holds those beliefs understands Catholicism, except to reject its doctrines: which makes her support of the LCWR understandable.
    Oh well.

Well,, it is clear or is it not? Francis named Crdnl Muller member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and four other offices. The rest of the Crdls had only one appointment.

“In the appointments announced Thursday, German Cardinal Gerhard Müller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, was named a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and four other offices.”

“None of the new cardinals was named a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, “
