   I love this sitcom; (Yes, Minister & Yes, Prime Minister) it’s one of my favourites and I’ve got the full box set.
   “Do you mean to say he’s never been an ordinary vicar?” “Good Lord no – men who want to become bishops tend to avoid pastoral work.” [not necessarily verbatim]
   So very true of the Catholic Church as well. My previous bishop, now retired, once told me he’d never been a parish priest at any stage of his career, though I hasten to add he was a very nice man and a pretty good bishop. And I think I read somewhere that Pius X was the last pope to have been a parish priest at some point in his life. Most recent popes tend to have been either professors of theology or papal nuncios and the like. It’s like an army having a general who has never been a platoon or company commander, but has spent many years at the army staff college before being made a brigadier-general with little or no combat or command experience.

   Hilarious, but also horrifying if one is a former Anglican like myself. Holy Church seems to be emulating the Anglican model, sadly, a point Bishop Lopes of the Ordinariate bravely made recently.

   I also own the complete box set, I have told many people if you want to understand how government, any government works, you have to watch Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister. Sir Humphrey is the quintessential deep state rat, smooth debonair and smarmy as a snake. Totally underhanded yet a paragon of virtue, This clip and the entire episode where the swamp connived to make Jim Hacker Prime Minister are totally hilarious, also when Hacker explains who reads what papers in the UK. Priceless

    Interesting. I thought JPII had been, based on hazy recollection from reading George Weigel’s biography of him years ago, but having checked it turns out he was in a Krakow parish all right, when he came back from Rome, from 1948 to 1951 but not as Parish Priest. And he was also chaplain to students at the Jagiellonian, at the same time, it seems. So not a PP exactly but definitely in a Parish.

    But let’s not forget that though not (I guess) technically true to the letter, this is very nearly true (“true in spirit” as one might put it) to say of the American general who won the Second World War and went on to become President.
