When I make a new item of Z Swag, such as a coffee mug, I am always a bit nervous that the image won’t be clear, or there will be something wrong with it.
That is why I generally will try to obtain a first example. Thus, I ordered a Libertas praestantissimum mug. It arrived. It looks fine!
It occurred to me that it might help people learn and make better known some of these great quotes from yesteryear – perennially applicable teachings of the Supreme Pontiff’s Magisterium – were I to make a series of WDTPRS mugs. We are seeing more and more attacks on the Church and on objective truth. These quotes pertain to our Catholic identity in an increasingly hostile world.
The quote on this particular mug, however, is from Libertas praestantissimum 31, an encyclical dating to 1888. The image will, of course, be larger on the surface:
“31. By the patrons of liberalism, however, who make the State absolute and omnipotent, and proclaim that man should live altogether independently of God, the liberty of which We speak, which goes hand in hand with virtue and religion, is not admitted; and whatever is done for its preservation is accounted an injury and an offense against the State. Indeed, if what they say were really true, there would be no tyranny, no matter how monstrous, which we should not be bound to endure and submit to.”
Does that not ring true for today?
The text does wrap pretty far around the mug, and so it cannot be read at a single glance without turning the mug. But the text is well worth it!
You could fill that mug with Mystic Monk Coffee or Tea.
I see that the Wyoming Carmelites have a Tea Gift Set with four types of tea. It is wrapped and would be a great gift, perhaps to your parish priest.
I have no way of telling who is buying what items from the Carmelites, but I can see the items purchased through my links. Lately I have noticed that quite a bit of Cowboy Blend is moving along as well as Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans.
And did you know they have Chocolate Covered Cherries? I didn’t until people started ordering them!
I should also add that if you get your fingers all chocolaty, you can wash your hands with soup from the Soap Sisters!
Finally, there is a new version of the Say The Black Do The Red, which has much larger writing.

These quotes from Pope Pius XI’s “Quas Primas” might also be nice on a mug:

I would like to think that the great Fr. Z reads my blog, but I know you are too busy. Quoted this encyclical just the other day. What a great Pope. And, wow, look at the snow behind your mug! Hope you can sell lots…Do you know that when I worked for two years for the State of Iowa government, that mug and most of yours would have been illegal in my office, on my desk? That was way back in the 90s. Shades of terror to come.

I just purchased one of the mugs. That is an excellent passage for all of us to ponder. Even though I do not agree with everything that I read on this blog, [There’s still hope for you.] I respect your convictions and am a daily visitor. Thank you, Fr. Z!
That Libertas praestantissimum is great but do you have it on a bumper sticker?
Bumper stickers? I thought about that, but I don’t think it would be legible. Do you?
I concur. Not a good idea for a bumper sticker. Letters too small. I do plan to order some of your “Save the Liturgy, Save the World” stickers though. AND I just received the Four Pack Sampler from Mystic Monks. I wondered if you knew if any of your blog followers were purchasing items. I guess not.

The mug looks great. I just received the larger version of your”to be deep in History is to cease to be Protestant” mug, and enjoyed my afternoon cuppa with it. Now if the mystic monks would only sell loose tea, then I could enjoy their tea in your mug. As it stand I drink their mystic monk blend in a plain mug most mornings.
I thought, Fr, you would enjoy a little zeugma. My wife and I were grinding the whole bean Cowboy Blend and she was marveling at the bean safe and French PRess Travel mug. I said “I guess those Monks think of everything.” Then it dawned on me that with their vows and prayer life, that indeed they do.
Not my battle, but watching some of the outrage from the AmChurch leftists, I couldn’t help thinking of the passage from the First Book of Samuel:

Right on theme with the Catholic Social Teaching class I am taking this semester. I think I will have to order this mug as well as the Church Militant one.

If I had the money I’d buy a bag or two, stick them in the fridge and not eat them until Easter!
The Mug looks great, I think maybe a few other items may help as well A Kitchen Apron, Table Mats, Fridge Magnets – this is just the beginning!
I particularly like the quote – quite similar to some of the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.
