Lisa Murkowski won re-election last November as a write-in candidate after losing the Republican primary to Joe Miller. She is one of only a handful of Republicans in the Senate that support abortion.
She is the first Republican to announce support for funding of Planned Parenthood.
So this breaking news item from Politico.com comes as no surprise:
Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has come out in opposition to the House’s attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, making her the first Republican senator to do so.
“I believe Planned Parenthood provides vital services to those in need and disagree with their funding cuts in the bill,” Murkowski wrote in a letter to Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Vice Chairman Thad Cochran (R-Miss.). “I ask you to consider these programs going forward to determine if there is room for allowing continued funding.”
Lisa Murkowski, by the way, professes to be Catholic.

As long as we’re putting “Catholic” in parenthesis in reference to Murchowski, you might just as well put “Republican” in parenthesis, too.
The bigger shame is that the vast majority of bishops don’t care – or don’t care enough to do anything about it – that abortion-and-sodomy-loving “Catholics” receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ.
I would not be the least surprised to see ANY politician suddenly appear with cloven hooves and blood red eyes spouting flames out of their mouths, dressed in speedos on the DC Mall.
Just by her actions between the primary (where the people spoke) and her paid-for write-in campaign, it was obvious that her focus is on herself. She is her own god. Not Christ. The rest is just posing and preening to make appearances. That’s all.
Will her bishop have the cojones to publicly correct her? Doubt it. I’d like to be proven wrong, but I gave up holding my breath in protest when I was, oh, 5 or 6. They don’t have the backbone to be leaders…they’d rather be liked and feted for their ‘pastoral’ approach.
As some great Father of the Church (I forget who…) I think said “open their eyes, Lord, or close them forever”. Can’t happen soon enough, for those in a position of public trust, who violate that trust or use it to their own ends.
Anything to get votes. The Republicans are no different.
Well when you consider that most of the people who are aborted would probably grow up to vote democrat, politically it makes perfect sense. Don’t be too protective of republicans apart from gay marriage and abortion they aren’t really with us.

Very sad. She is not leading from a position of strength at this point. What women need from Catholic women in the political sphere is to be rooted in the sense of the “feminine genius” consistent with JPII’s Letter to Women, and to have women leaders who can be life-affirming, who resist joining with the forces of destruction.
This is why a politician being R means nothing to me vs being D. They are all either Pilate or Caesar. Christ stands as the only alternative to them. They are on their masonic capitol hill while he is on cavalry hill.

I’m a private sector teacher. I provide vital services to those in need…where’s my cut of all the tax money? Oh, wait…I teach theology, a controversial subject, and some people think government funding of my salary would be unethical…
I wonder if Sen. Murkowski thinks so…
PS – I don’t think government should fund my salary. I don’t think government should fund Planned Parenthood, even from a purely fiscal standpoint. The ethical problems in staining our tax dollars with blood makes an even bigger argument, though.
Look at her history – she will support anything and everything that will keep her in D.C. She is not counted as the best of us, I would say.

How I wish we could count on ALL our bishops to stand up and chastise those who, being in the public eye, purport to be Catholic, yet spread scandal abundantly.
There are about 5 Alaskan Catholic blogs and we have been hitting this issue for about 3 weeks now.
(See: ). The Archbishop has in the past had this to say through his Vicar General (Note: this was from a few years ago):
Rev. Donald Bramble, vicar general of the archdiocese, confirmed Schwietz and Murkowski met privately. He said Schwietz, who was in Florida on Thursday, believes Murkowski has considered the issue very carefully. “We might disagree with her on the particulars, but we see that she’s seeking a nuanced approach and we appreciate that,” Bramble said.
It doesn’t appear that we are going to be getting any action from the Archbishop or the pastors in this diocese any time soon….
@Disco: Well said! I agree wholeheartedly. I wish more of our co-religionists understood this. So many these days seems to put their identity as Republicans ahead of their identity as Catholic Christians. Some are even using the words “social justice” as an epithet. Wow.
There is serious confusion out there.
