Of course the Bishops should put down their dinner forks and pick up their swords again, but this may be over doing it a bit!! :~)

  2. catholicmidwest says:

I love the look on his face. I don’t know who this is, but if he didn’t have a hunting dad, a gun and a bird dog when he was a teenaged kid, he should have. Nice photo.

  3. ghp95134 says:

Well! THAT sure beats the devil out of Albino monk assassins, don’t it just!??

  4. SQ says:

    That ROCKS!!

  5. KevinSymonds says:

Here would be my caption submissions:

“Now, where did you say those church-rats were infesting?”

    or

“With this bad-boy, I could shoot a pimple off the rears of those pesky church-rats from 1,000 yards away!”

  6. Now that’s my kinda Cardinal!

  7. Pearty says:

“With the scope attached, you could pick off a wayward bishop from up to 2000 yards…..”

  8. JKnott says:

    ‘Don’t like the corrected translation?”
    “Go ahead, make my day.”

  9. Geoffrey says:

I recall reading somewhere that in the bad old days, bishops would wield maces and not swords. It was considered “morally acceptable” to bash in someone’s skull as opposed to spilling blood. Either way, I find that picture a bit disturbing!

  10. APX says:

Perhaps he heard of the “liturgical beretta”, but felt a need for the liturgical M16 for those extra resilient liturgical directors.

  11. Matthew in Vancouver says:

Is he pointing it at the National Catholic Fishwrap?

  12. pyrosapien says:

Say the Black…. Do the Red!

  13. Phil_NL says:

“Who said the apocalypse couldn’t have some pleasant side-effects?! You must be prepared, my sons!”

And hollow-point please, no need to bother with full metal jackets!

  14. Widukind says:

“Boy, you can sure get a good aim on liturgical dissidents with this new edition of the Roman “Cannon”.

  15. diffal says:

Well thats a very litteral interpretation of 1 Peter 3:15
(Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you)

  16. Kerry says:

Hmm…it appears the Cardinal is right handed and left eyed. There seems to be a very short stock there. Is that a suppressor at the business end? Where is the photograph in the prone position with the bipod?

  17. AnAmericanMother says:

    Kerry,
Just beat me to it. My left-eyed friends find it’s simpler just to shoot left handed.

I think the camera angle foreshortens the stock, plus the helpful assistant is taking up some space on it. And kudos to His Eminence for keeping his index finger out of the trigger guard.

  18. Mike Morrow says:

“I say…kill ’em all and let God sort ’em out!”

  19. amulack says:

    The Church Militant!

  20. irishgirl says:

‘Don’t like the new translation? Go ahead-make my day’-JKnott.
Oh, man, that’s a good one!
That is one ‘nasty looking gun’!
Does Fr. Richtsteig know about this? ; )

  21. Great! Anyone know who he is?

  22. dziwisz says:

That’s Cardinal Józef Glemp, former primat of Poland.
Here is more about him, if you are interested:

  23. lgreen515 says:

@diffal came up with the best caption.

  24. Theodore says:

It appears that His Excellency has one of the latest toys in the Army’s arsenal.

  25. ppojawa says:

This is Cardinal Glemp, the Primate Emeritus of Poland.

  26. Martial Artist says:

    @Kerry and @AnAmericanMother,

You are both correct about his Eminence being right-handed and left-eye-dominant. That, or its reverse, is a situation referred to by competitive shooters as being cross-dominant. I made mention of it in my suggested caption at AoftheA, where I first saw it, as a mental aside by the chap helping to support the rifle.

    Pax et bonum,
    Keith Töpfer

  27. rakesvines says:

Leave the blood on our hands your eminence. You’ll never be the same after your first CK.
You need to watch ‘The Mission’.

  28. Dirichlet says:

    Reminds me of this photo.

Remember: si vis pacem, para bellum</i.

  29. chironomo says:

“Cannon Law”… the one with the cannon makes the laws!

And that is definitely NOT an M-16… a scope of that size would be pointless on an M-16.

Can’t tell the model, but it is likely some type of high-powered sniper rifle judging by the hardware that is visible…

  30. David Homoney says:

“With heretics abounding Card. Glemp takes aim at sola scriptura and the Once Saved Always Saved army”
“Cardinal Glemp shows the Church how to be militant again”
“Cardinal Glemp shows how to be the modern Charles Montrel”
“The good cardinal, just before his trip to Transylvania, tests the Holy Water super soaker talked about on Fr. Z’s website”
“The head of the new Vatican SWAT team shows how to deal with those who attack the Church”
    and finally
“Is that another ‘Pro-Choice’ politician going up to receive the Eucharist and thereby defame it?”

  31. medievalist says:

Are there liturgical guitars and drums just out of the shot frame?

  32. Dr. Eric says:

The “poster boy” for the St. Gabriel Possenti Society.

    :-D

  33. Tony Layne says:

His Eminence mulls other ways of eliminating liturgical dancing.

@ chironomo: Yeah, I was thinking sniper rifle, too, although the angle of the pic does elongate the barrel quite a bit. It just looks a little too inelegant to be anything but military/law enforcement equipment.

  34. Joan A. says:

So his Eminence is “CROSS-dominant” in more ways than one?!? Amazing.

  35. JMody says:

    Joan A. — BRAVO!!

I’d say this looks like German or Swiss equipment on the trade-show posters behind him — are they shedding their renowned passive liberalism for something else? It certainly puts a new sense of energy to the phrase “Ecclesia Militans”, doesn’t it?

  36. Warmiaczka says:

Hey, this Cardinal used to be a Bishop of „my” diocese!
Yes, it might be the answer why liturgical dances are still quite unpopular in Poland.
It seems to me that the man in the background is the present President of Poland, Bronis?aw Komorowski, who is a hunter. He would provide some precious hints, for example: how to aim at litur… ehm, at moving target.
You should also note notoriously large ears of His Eminence, helping him measure the wind and calculate the trajectory of the bullet. Yes…

  37. irishgirl says:

I had a feeling that it was Cardinal Glemp! Wasn’t quite sure at first!
‘The poster boy for the St. Gabriel Possenti Society’-oh, that’s a good one, Dr. Eric!

  38. Geremia says:

Is he an EF Mass supporter?

  39. dominic1955 says:

The rifle he’s holding looks to be an updated Dragunov SVD, most likely in 7,62x54R.

  40. Geremia says:

Is the St. Gabriel Possenti Society legitimate? Is he officially the patron saint of handgunners?

Also, can priests carry guns according to Canon law?
