More than seven years ago, on April 19th, 2005, Benedict XVI was elected Pope. On average, Popes usually reign for 7.19 years. Now, Benedict XVI has surpassed that average.

Fr. Z’s KINDLE Wish List

Ad multos, multos annos!
Thank God! If possible I hope he can live past 100. He’s been more than I dared hoped for in a new Pope!
Hope he’s just getting started.
I’ve mentioned this before but i can’t help but remember when he was elected. Some in the press referred to him as a ‘transitional Pope’ ……… hmm…. not bad… the Pope of Christian Unity.
I’m not sure why this made the news. If the average is 7.19 years, then that just means that Pope Benedict is in the top 50%. I hope he reaches the top 5%, myself.
On a side note, it must be a pain to be pope (or a supreme court justice) when the media is so focused on your death. How about focusing on his time still here, eh?
Oh, yes, ad multos, multos, MULTOS!
Love the headline.
Am finishing his Spirit of the Liturgy–above average indeed!
God bless our Holy Father: long may he lead us!
Here’s hoping he’s well on his way to trashing the average. God bless this noble, gentle shepherd.
May we have many more years from this wonderful Holy Father! It is all up to God… may He be generous!
Pray for the Pope every day.
I love him so much, and when he was elected, we all agreed in my family that he looked like my Aunt Stanislausia! Long may he reign.
I’ll say he’s above average. ;-)
Benedict XVI is WAAAY above average. Let’s pray that his length of time as Pope is way above average too!
I’m curious how the 7.19 years was arrived at – it seems unlikely.
We are roughly 1979 years into the existence of the papacy (2012 – 33).
1979/7.19 = 275 and change.
That means we should have had 275 Popes … but we haven’t!
Pope Benedict XVI is listed as #265 on the official list (Annuario Pontificio, 2012). We are missing 10 Popes!
So using 1979/265 = 7.4679 years per Pope. (I like to use 7.5 as a reasonable approximation.)
Using that calculation, Benedict XVI has another 3 months before hitting the average mark. (Not that I would say anything about his tenure has been average!)
The information regarding his place on the list of oldest Popes is also inaccurate.
He currently ranks as #8 on my list (which only goes back to the 13th century).
He will pass Pope Innocent XII in age about the same time as he rises over the average length of a papacy.
He is a gentleman and a scholar
Shalom
