ROME: “Shadow Synod” II September 10-12

I received word of a conference coming up in Rome.  The conference is clearly part of an organized effort to influence the proceedings of the upcoming Synod of Bishop on the family… and not in a good way.   This conference – like the recent “Shadow Synod” of 5 May last – is also to be held in the black shadow of the Jesuits.  It will be at the Gregorian University, like the last one.  It’ll be an after-glow of the burning City of God that was the “Shadow Synod”.

Happily, like good Northern Europeans, they are charging lots of money to attend, perhaps not knowing that in Rome no one pays anything. So, there will be 4 people at this.  But that’s not the problem.  They will have papers which will go into a book which will then be distributed to.

Let’s look at the brochure and make some comment.

Note: Where you see Piazza della Pilota… that’s the Jesuit Gregorian University, even though the Greg isn’t mentioned.

An Opening Address will be given by our old friend Oscar Card. Rodríguez Maradiaga.

Note the description of the conference. They are looking for

“fresh perspectives on … the relation between doctrine and pastoral practice, the sense of the faithful, an ethics of mercy, and indissolubility int he context of a contemporary theology of marriage.”

This is sponsored by INTAMS and Aldegonde Brenninkmeijer-Werhahn, Dutch.   She’s a wealthy liberal with close ties to the Jesuits.

Andrea Grillo, from the Rome’s liturgical institute Sant’Anselmo, is an enemy of traditional worship.

Eberhard Schokenhoff, one of the worst, was a speaker at the 5 May Shadow Synod.  HERE and HERE  For this guy, God doesn’t communicate truths to us.  No, we are in dialogue with God and we, somehow, shape God.  He’s for Communion for everything that breathes, it seems.  He is a heretic.

What could possibly go wrong?

This is part of an orchestrated effort to condition the environment of the Synod.

How can one believe the sense of the faithful for this event, let alone concerning the majority of the pronouncements in the Church today. Many of the Faithful are not invited to these conferences and my sense is I cannot trust many of the clergy who will be there. The percentage of Catholics in the west who frequent mass have dropped alarmingly. Makes me think they are in a state of mortal sin. Of the rest, very few frequent the Sacrament of Confession. Remember the Church in the Rubrics of indulgences says unless you have made a good confession within the octave of performing the act necessary to receive the plenary indulgence you do not get it. It is exactly the same as saying the Church expects that Catholics sin seriously within two weeks of a good confession. Her experience obviously says so. So I ask this question can we seriously consider those who are very obviously not in a state of the grace that sanctifies are trustworthy heralds of the Holy Ghost, the Divine Eternal Spirit of God’s supernatural love and sanctifying grace. Read wisdom chapter one and see what drives the Spirit of wisdom and discipline out and read the Miserere and see David’s words about not taking the Holy Spirit from him. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

  2. About the sensus fidelium – sensus fidei… You must have the Faith before you can have a “sense” of it.

  3. robtbrown says:

I wonder what effect this will have on Greg attendance, which has already lost a lot of students to Santa Croce (Opus Dei).

  4. everett says:

So, it appears that one of the key topics is “indissolubility in the context of contemporary marriage”. This can only go well. Basically, while for Jesus marriage was indissoluble, given the contemporary context, what Jesus said is no longer relevant.

  5. jhayes says:

Radio Vatican has an article today on Communion for the divorcd and remarried (Italian only)

“La Chiesa del primo millennio predicava il matrimonio monogamico ma esercitava la misericordia nei confronti di coloro che non erano riusciti a realizzare questo ideale. I divorziati-risposati erano sottoposti alla penitenza pubblica, ma, dopo uno anno o due, venivano riammessi alla piena comunione ecclesiale ed aucaristica”. Ad affermarlo è il teologo don Giovanni Cereti

    {… argument that Canon 8 of the Council of Nicea did apply to divorced/remarried not just windows/widowers who remarried…}

  8. Father et al. After your colourful description, I can only see this as a laughable attempt to thwart the Synod. I’d say after the last one, with maybe ones, maybe, tens, of people in attendance, what possibly could this achieve the second time around? Pope Francis is likely going to be more mindful this time around too since that big media brouhaha with his star ringmaster he elected being caught lying (++Kasper), and I mean this seems to attract a select minority of people ….. a minority that that majority of the lay Church/Body of Christ doesn’t care about back home. Also we know the Pope is pro life.

Not to mention on my front here in Canada, he elected my main man, my awesome Archbishop Cardinal, Thomas Collins, to represent North America on the English front!!! If you’ve snooped around the internet, you’d know he’s firmly pro life (attends Canada’s March for Life every May and speaks pre-march) and gave a great interview to Word on Fire/Brandon Vogt about this matter …. guess what he’s conservative on the communion/divorced issue.

Not sorry to say, if these little whiny gnats want to try to subvert the Synod this time around, they’d have to contract Ethan Hunt and IMF to do their dirty work.

  9. Fr. Timothy Ferguson says:

Would it be possible – or even advisable – to flood this conference with orthodox attendees to raise the right questions at the proper times – or would this just poor fuel on the fires of dissent that should best be allowed to smother themselves out?

  10. As a side note, the artwork on this flyer bodes ill.

  11. Hate to say it, but anytime I see the inference of ‘Jesuit’ and conference which is supposed to rely on the sense of the faithful, I shudder in that most will have none of the former and are nothing of the latter.

  12. Pnkn says:

Oh, if only the pope were a Jesuit – he would be able to politely behind the scenes have the conference rescheduled so as to not interfere in any way (including providing any kind of distraction) with the Synod…..I’m sure a Jesuit pope would have received at least an announcement of the conference if not an invitation to an event in the pope’s (himself!) own backyard and would immediately have said, say hey brothers, let’s focus on one event at a time !
On the other hand, this suggests that the Jesuits have little regard for the synod if they are not all in to pay full attention to the synod. I wonder from where/whom that leadership message comes ?

    Prayers….

  13. juergensen says:

You know, the Church should be a haven from the world, a place to turn to and hear about truth, faith, hope, salvation. These past few years, reading about the Church has been as depressing as reading the news.

  14. mattwcu says:

What would happen if a good number of faithful folks signed up and offered an orthodox defense and perspective?

  15. CharlesG says:

What galls me is the utter dishonesty of those who say that no doctrine would change, just pastoral practice. Perhaps there are a few naifs promoting the Kasper/Marx line who believe that, but it is clear that many in this camp simply do not believe Catholic moral doctrine and want to change it to embrace the sewer morality of the modern culture. It is pure Saul Alinsky Marxist left wing political “ends justify means” lying. And yet, as we can see from current American politics, there are enough low information sheep who are happy to believe this stuff nowadays.

  16. Felicia says:

I find the whole Synod brou-ha-ha to be so depressing! I fear the Winnipeg Statement all over again, but this time on a global scale! We lay faithful are supposed to avoid “private interpretation” and be docile and obedient to our Bishops in terms of “what is the faith”. Yet what a difference exists if one’s Bishop is Cdl. Burke vs. Cdl. Kasper! And if one says “but wait, that doesn’t seem right” voices are raised about “are you more Catholic than the Pope?” or “you don’t speak for the Church!”. And where does that leave us laiety? “Lost, like sheep without a shepherd!” Maranatha!

  17. Iacobus M says:

Did I hear someone say something about “the Smoke of Satan”?

  18. hilltop says:

Shutter the Greg. (Poor St. Gregory, pray for us.)
Suppress the “Society” of Jesus. (Lord Jesus, have (actual) Mercy)
    Pray the Rosary.

  19. Benedict Joseph says:

In an attempt to let these “individuals” off the hook, could you place hubris in the category of obsessive/compulsive disorder? They just can’t stop. It brings to mind Proverbs 26:11 – “As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his folly.”
Their persistence in the bold display demonstrates that, should the Synod prove to be their Waterloo, they will not disappear, only hide in their academic and pastoral roles – even in the confessional – and continue to spawn these falsehoods among the vulnerable, low-info and nominal. Where is the hand of reproof?

  20. Aquinas Gal says:

Mary McAleese is attending, I see–she supported gay “marriage” in the recent Irish vote. Just sad…

  21. steve51b31 says:

Was touring the Vatican at the end of May when Kaspar and large entourage processed thru floor mass. ( We had just heard Mass, said at the altar of St. Joseph). I remember thinking, can the fruits of this be good? Said a prayer to the Holy Spirit, that Holy Wisdom be attendant.

  22. Nicolas Bellord says:

The problem with this conference is that you have to state your affiliation on the application form. If, like m,e having no affiliation other than ‘Catholic’ I suspect putting that on the form would automatically disqualify you.

  23. Pnkn says:

    Hello Nicolas B. –

You might write: adopted son of God.

How could that be refused ?

  24. Johnny Domer says:

So they’re looking for “fresh perspectives on . . . indissolubility in the context of a contemporary theology of marriage.” Funny, every “fresh,” “contemporary” theological perspective I’ve heard this past year sounds an awful lot like the now-35-year-old viewpoints proposed (and utterly demolished by St. John Paul) at the 1980 Synod on the Family.

  25. Mary says:

Have you read the novel Fr. Elijah by Michael O’Brien? If not, read it. This conference sounds somewhat familiar.

  26. tioedong says:

Racism alert! all the people shown on the leaflet are European, with light brown hair.
    (/s) (end sarcasm alert).

I guess they recognize the opposition by African and Asian bishops to this.
