Recently we had a Rorate Mass at St. Mary’s in Pine Bluff.
We started Mass so as to end more or less at sunrise.

I was beginning to see myself wane towards the Orthodox (or, at least, the Catholic Orthodox), until I saw this. Thank you, Father, for posting these beautiful pictures! I’m reading “Light from the East” by Orthodox Fr. Michael Evdokimov, but prefaced by Robert Smith, F.S.C., and published by Paulist Press (Catholic). I guess this begs the question: how much can we learn from the east vis-a-vis the liturgy after Vatican II? Are we, in the modern Church, really worshipping as Christ formed His Church to worship?
For those of us who have lamented what has happened to our liturgy over the past 50 yrs. these pictures are so inspiring…but they also make you miss what we once had…..
Will never understand why Paul VI signed off on the Novus Ordo…..Bugnini must have been working overtime…..
Good News is Masses like this are coming back and gaining momentum….we pray that our part of the world will soon be part of that momentum….

I was delighted to see the four relics on display on either side of the tabernacle. Very moving. I wish I saw that more often.
Here in Calgary, Alberta, our new young priest, who appreciates the traditional, celebrated three Rorate Masses on the past three Saturday mornings. Yesterday, the final Mass, was celebrated Ad Orientem with the altar set up appropriately including a relic. The prayers were in Latin. We had a full house as people from other parishes had begun joining us for these 6:30 a.m. celebrations. What a beautiful liturgy, and now, finally, I get it – I get why facing the altar rather than the people is the right thing to do. While I understood the reasons for this in my head I finally got to experience a Latin Mass and felt it in my soul. May God protect us from minimalists who seek to destroy all that is beautiful and meaningful in our liturgy.

We don’t have as many candles though :)
Here in Maine there was a candlelight Mass on December 10th up in Fort Fairfield (way up north near Presque Isle), technically not a Rorate Mass as it was in the evening, in the usual monthly Thursday evening time slot for the EF Mass up there.
Brick by brick has been gaining momentum up here recently. In addition to Fr. Kyle’s Masses, our new associate here at Price of Peace parish in Lewiston has learned to say the traditional Mass and was the celebrant for 2 of the Advent Ember Day Masses. This means both of our priests in this parish plus the pastor of our neighboring parish in Auburn can all say the traditional mass. Deo Gratias!
Seeing pictures like this and noticing the young boys there, is it any wonder the Diocese of Madison has such a vocations boom?
We also were blessed to have a solemn Low Mass by candlelight here in Cedar Rapids Iowa last week. Beautiful Mass, I can imagine what it was like in days past where persecuted Christians had to hold them in secret.
