Trump appointee’s stockings

From ChurchPop:

You don’t see this very often in Washington D.C.!

Representative Ryan Zinke (R-MT) has been nominated by Donald J. Trump to be the new Secretary of the Interior. And at his Senate confirmation hearing, Rep. Zinke wore something unusual: socks with Our Lady of Guadalupe imprinted on them.

This tidbit was spotted by Melina Mara, national political staff photographer at The Washington Post, and posted on her Instagram account.

    “Wise Latina woman”…since December, 1531.
    Yes, quotation marks.

The article also noted that Zinke is a Lutheran.

So if this chap is a Lutheran then the design on his socks merely means he liked the picture just as some people wear Crucifixes as jewellery but may not be practising Christians. In my town there is a large beaded curtain showing Our Lady of Guadeloupe in the window of a restaurant. Impressive but probably merely used as decoration.

Incidentally Mr Trump sent a tweet by mistake to a lady with the same name in my town (in England) thinking it was to his daughter. And he will have the code to the nuclear button – oh dear.

  5. The socks on the Lutheran give me more hope than the bishop on ad orientem post.

“I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.” Gen. 3:15

Good image to stand guard over one’s heel.

It would be interesting to follow up the references in the Wikipedia article, “Luther’s Marian theology” – and to try to find out if some contemporary Lutherans are more ‘Marian’ than Luther. (For example, I’ve heard one thing and another about Finnish Lutheran-Orthodox relations, and wonder if that has ‘Marian’ aspects?)

It would also be interesting to know more about uses of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. (For example, I know t-shirts which include Mexican flags as well – but not what the exact intention of this is!)

I like this guy already. Doesn’t matter that he’s Lutheran or even Atheist. Our Lady has done much to convert the Americas, even converting cannibals. American Catholics need to get back into the business of real hopeful progress, not pointless quibbling.

Much better than that awful disgrace of a jacket which interluded a swear word around a picture of Our Lady of Guadaluppe recently pulled from shelves due to so many thousands of us signing petitions, emailing, and calling in!

  12. Joe in Canada says:

The Calvinists would betray Catholics to Japanese persecutors by having them choose to step on a religious image or avoid doing so….

The Lutheran is a seal team six guy.
