Father Gerald P. Carey, pastor of St. Paul Parish, celebrated a Missa Cantata yesterday, January 25th in St. Paul Church. It was for the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul during this year of St. Paul. The church was filled to capacity to hear Palestrina’s Missa Brevis performed by a schola commissioned for the event. Rober Hall directed the schola and Robert Ridgell was the organist.

I was there! It was great, especially the music and the church building. I pray that soon there may be a regular high mass in Philly.

well Duh? Its Palestrina! :). You use proper liturgical music, lots of people show up. You use campfire songs, and they run out as quick as they can to get away from the bongo’s, electric guitars, and synthesizers (and no I dont mean cheapo organs)

There was a EF High Mass at the Basilica a few years back (before Summorum Pontificum) – a newly ordained FSSP priest (whose name escapes me) celebrated his first Mass.

Fr Carey did an outstanding job. He is to be commended. Now if the Archdiocese of Philadelphia would only loosen up on it’s extremely restrictive rules about the EF.

Agreed!. You hit the nail on the head!. And I may add, to teach the faithful of the Archdiocese about the EF and traditional Catholicism. Not just “I can’t speak Latin” and “No body is asking for it”.
Father Carey did a magnificant job. The Latin Mass brought back many memories of my years gone by. The Latin Mass, Music, Vestments and the full Church attendance was without a doubt an occasion never to be forgotten. It was beutiful beyond words. Hope there will be more to come.
