I watched the live feed of the Holy Father’s visit today pretty closely.
But Vincenzo of Sancte Pater – the official WDTPRS photoshopper – caught a screenshot I missed.

“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

LOL! My jaw literally dropped when I saw the picture. For a second I thought all my dreams had come true, and Pope Benedict had truly donned the triple tiara. :-) I think we should start a novena for the re-introduction of the triple tiara in the ceremonies of the Supreme Pontiff.
Would that it was true.
How fitting it would have been for the Vicar of Christ to wear the tiara in the presence of the arch-layman of Canterbury. [No. Actually it would not have been in these circumstances.]
Other than being deliberately provocative and triumphalist (a word I use rarely) on an occasion when the Church ought to be circumspect and magnanimous, what point is there to displaying this photo-shopped thumb-in-the-eye to ecumenism?
[Relaaaaaax. It’s going to be okay.]
I’m with Rich. What his holiness said made the point far more effectively than any headgear could ever have.
No need to bite our thumbs at the CoE.
Sure, Father. Because I’m the one who seems harsh and bitter here.
Good grief. If the Pope wearing a sign of the authority the successor of St. Peter (and the Church) has intrinsically from her divine founder is bad for ecumenism, this tells us that ecumenism is bad for the faith. Seriously, the Church is not triumphalist, it is triumphant by the victory won by her sacred redeemer.
What a way to get my hopes up!…until I saw the name “Vincenzo.”
Still, somebody ought to send that to the Holy Father, so he can see how snazzy he looks in the tiara, which needs to be brought back. (And the sedia gestatoria.)
Athanasius: amen.
Athanasius: DOUBLE AMEN!
Rich, the Church was “circumspect and magnanimous” today. And quite powerful, I might add. The work of the Holy Ghost today through Christ’s vicar was profound and Catholics are rightly happy, not in the context of “triumphalism” but in what it can mean for the good folks of the British Isles, and those in the world who watched. Ecumenism isn’t “us against them.” The Truth was delivered today, in strength and humility, to a good people in need of Him.
Pope Benedict [verbally] wore the tiara before the world today, and he did it well.
Well, I’m a longtime admirer of Mr. Leonardi and his “Ten Reasons” blog. He’s not given to the kind of uber-ecumenist self-flagellation that seems to come as standard programming for the Catholic Left.
But I wasn’t bugged by this. I thought it was amusing. Which I presume is all that Vincenzo and Fr. Z had in mind as an end.
Folks… just have a chuckle and move on to far more important things… like reading the Holy Father’s addresses.
C’mon…that is just so funny…wickedly funny!
I was so excited until I saw it was photoshopped. I have DREAMED of seeing the triple crown being worn again.
You got me good! The facial expressions are perfect! To say that His Holiness is a man of considerable stature would be understatement.
I’ve lost count of how many of these silly photo-shopped papal tiara images I’ve seen scattered across the Internet!
You know how I know it’s photoshopped? Msgr. Marini would have been smiling much wider if the Holy Father were actually wearing the papal tiara.
Heh… well, Rich and I tend to have visitors (not our regular commenters, of course!) who can’t tell when we’re joking. So then we spend a long time calming people down, explaining that it’s a joke, explaining that not everything on a Catholic blog has to be serious…. So yeah, Rich is probably having nightmare visions of shocked, shocked Protestants sure that your picture is real.
Of course, we’re going to get that anyway, most likely, because the Pope went to the UK. So maybe there’s no point not joking about it. ;)
But it kinda takes the spontaneity right out of you, to see that for some people, you have to write “This is a joke” for them to be able to enjoy it. I used to do April Fools jokes every year, back in the olden days, when most of the Intarwebz was on mailing lists. I don’t do them much anymore, because people get very unhappy about having even one designated joke morning.
Not fair Fr Z. I slept so soundly last night thinking this was a real photo – all was right with the world!
So what if it were real? He is the Pope, the Vicar of Christ. So what if he wears the crown that is proper to his office (and was worn by Popes for 1200 years)? Do people get up in arms about an Orthodox patriarch wearing a crown?
The fact that Catholics are shocked and appalled at the sight of the Supreme Pontiff in a tiara is a sign of how far we have fallen, not how far we have come.
So, I add another, Athanasius: AMEN!
I love that picture! Vincenzo strikes again! My jaw just dropped when I saw this!
I add a ‘triple, quadruple’ AMEN to what Athanasius said!
Rich,
I’m going to go out on a limb here. You think that the Papal tiara is a relic of a former age, a symbol of a kind of Catholicism which no longer exists, or perhaps the equivalent of beginning a speech with “Nya, nya!”
I think you’re missing several important points, but I hope Father Z. will forgive me for taking your post in earnest.
1) We can’t overcome the differences which divide if we can’t even acknowledge that they exist.
2) Now that the “tiara-less” approach has been tried for 50 years and found not to have advanced the cause of Christian Unity, maybe it’s time for a new approach?
3) Every bit as much as the late Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict, gloriously reigning, understands the power of a symbol, whether that be an image, a word, or a liturgical action. I wish the picture weren’t the result of photoshop, but since it is, we’ll wait for the day when it isn’t.
4) His Holiness isn’t beating up on the Anglicans. He’s being the grown up in a room full of teenagers. He’s trying (against various temper tantrums from all sorts of quarters) to confirm the brethren in the faith.
Is it worth the trouble to point out that the triregno has NEVER been part of liturgical garb?
The only time, to my knowledge, it was ever used liturgically was when Blessed John XXIII wore it as the equivalent of the Byzantine mitre when he concelebrated the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom with Melkite bishops.
\\Do people get up in arms about an Orthodox patriarch wearing a crown?\\
Actually, this is the Byzantine mitre, worn by all bishops of this tradition, whether Catholic or Orthodox and not just patriarchs.
I did notice, however, that his sermon at Westminster Abbey was basic B-flat catechesis. Hmmmmmmmmmmm……
I might also add that he was merely “robed in state” (with stole and mozetta) rather than vested to be celebrating Vespers.
I am proud of the pope and pray for his safety.
One thing I like is that the English Congregation of Benedictines still appoints a titular Abbot of Westminster.
It seems to be used mainly as an honorary title for a senior member, but I like to think that there’s an Abbot ready for when he can reclaim it.
\\2) Now that the “tiara-less” approach has been tried for 50 years and found not to have advanced the cause of Christian Unity, maybe it’s time for a new approach?\\
There were schisms and splinters before the papal tiara was even thought of. There were even local schisms at Rome in those days.
The tiara was de rigeur at the time of the Reformation.
If it didn’t hold Christians together then, resuming it will not put them back together now.
