He was 73 years old.
Please, in charity, remember him in your prayers, asking God in His mercy to bring him into His presence without delay.

Prayers for his family in their sorrow.
I have had the opportunity over the years to serve for Many of his Masses. He will truly be missed.
Prayers for the repose of his soul, and may God be merciful in his judgement.
I always enjoyed hearing him speak at the ordination/installation of bishops. His talks were always on 8 1/2 X 11 pieces of paper folded in quarters, which always opened with great ceremony before he began to speak. He always bad a rather “breathy” way of speaking, which always made me wonder if he had lung trouble. Considering his final illness, apparently he did.
During his tenure as nuncio, some very important and, for the most part, good episcopal appointments were made. He also was pretty good about investigating bishops who made some rather bad decisions.
May his soul rest in peace.
I had the opportunity to see him in person at the installation Mass of my own bishop a few years ago, and I would often listen to his Masses from the basilica in Washington on EWTN. His voice had such a soothing and comforting tone. He shall be missed.

We recently got a wonderful new bishop here in my diocese, Bp Felipe Estevez. It was an excellent appointment and we have much for which to thank Abp Sambi. I actually wrote to him to tell him how much we loved our new bishop, but unfortunately I doubt that my letter made it in time. Well, I suppose he knows now.
In any case, he always seemed to me like one of the good guys, and I think he will be missed.
Prayers for him. Memory eternal.

I think I saw him only once, on a Mass at the National Shrine in Washington televised by EWTN for the first feast day of St. Damien of Molokai. I remember that his voice sounded rather ‘breathy’-he probably had the lung trouble even then.
I was just reading the Denver Catholic Register this morning. He was the one who gave Archbishop Chaput the news of his assignment to Philadelphia. May he rest in peace.
As Papal Nuncio, Archb. Sambi was the Chancellor of the Pontificium Collegium Iosephinum where I went for minor seminary. He visited once while I was there. He came over to the Theologate and had a beer with us seminarians. For quite a while the background to my phone was His Excellency drinking a pint of Paulner from a Ratzinger Fan Club stein. Requiescat in pace.
God rest His Excellency’s soul! He was a great Nuncio and a wonderful mentor. I will remember the last mass I served for him in D.C.

I can echo Keith Kenney’s comment above since I was also there…sharing a pint with the good archbishop and snapping up a lot of great photos of him having good fellowship with the theologate seminarians at the “Josh”. The seminarians present for that night had a great time with Archbishop Sambi and enjoyed his presence among us. Requiescat in pace, faithful servant…..
