About this blog…
“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”

“The modern habit of doing ceremonial things unceremoniously is no proof of humility; rather it proves the offender's inability to forget himself in the rite, and his readiness to spoil for every one else the proper pleasure of ritual.”

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II-

Let us pray…
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.Yes, Fr. Z is taking ads…

GREAT causes to support
true, too true
…and then throw the TV out.
Utterly, painfully, completely true.
AMEN to that!
And for the classical music – something catchy like Dies Irae?
What a hoot! (and so true!)
I can’t even watch TV anymore because it’s so full of this “reality” TV garbage. I pretty much only watch CFL football and the Weather Network. Y’know, when I was a kid TV shows were about things like family and social values.
LCD in overheard recap conversations of many, most painful when it is that of children.
Misery loving company, escaping parallel reality, viewer ego boosting, voiding the emotion or understanding of human drama, and eliminating inspiration of truth and beauty, ‘reality’ tv is a nail in the coffin of society.
No fun.
Don’t have TV! So I say skip step 1 and move right on to step 2. The Dies Irae is a good choice. ;-)
I had to give up watching my beloved English detective programmes because not one episode went by when there wasn’t some sort of anti-Catholicism woven into the plot.
Father, how do you manage to find funny stuff like this (I always enjoy it though)? On another note, Dies Irae for the music seems a bit too much for the situation. Something in a nice minor key (like d-minor) should do.
Sorry, folks… but I feel the need to watch “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Master Chef” (assuming these qualify as reality shows…). There is something about undercooked scallops and collapsed suffles that attracts my morbid curiosity. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa! Regardless, I would certainly appreciate chef Ramsay tong lashing contestants while Walkürenritt plays ominously on the headphone. Now, that is very apocalyptic…
Kill your television
Fr. Z, any chance you’re leading us in a TV & sundry burning, as in Eclipse of the Sun?
The only reason to have television is for EWTN programs like Journey Home, anything with Dr. Scott Hahn, and PBS to watch an ocassional Masterpiece Theater, like Downton Abbey or Inspector Lewis, or if they showed some oldies like Bridehead Revisited or The Six Wives, or Lily Langtree.
and watch out for books plummeting to their doom:

This begs the question: why don’t we just forget the television, or rather use it as a (computer) monitor, since all of this can probably be found online (in various places)?
I haven’t had TV since everything went ‘digital’ two or three years ago. My set is an ‘old’ analog.
When I’ve been away, I do watch TV in my hotel/motel room. But I try to be selective in what I tune into.
I like sports (I’ve missed watching my NFL football, plus last year’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Stanley Cup playoffs), costume dramas on PBS, shows on Animal Planet (especially with dogs!), ‘some’ of the history programs-and of course, EWTN!
I think the only ‘reality’ show I ever liked was one in the summer of 2008 called ‘Greatest American Dog’. I don’t care much for reality shows outside of this one.
All told, most TV today is ‘garbage’
I’m seriously considering sending an invoice to my cable company to pay me for the rot gut that’s out there 24/7.
Of course the worse the behavior, the more these celebrities seem to be idolized.
‘Spiegel Im Spiegel’ by Arvo Part will go very very well.
