GUEST POST: Mass WITHOUT Sign of Peace! POLL ALERT

From a reader:

I went to Mass yesterday at the hospital chapel for the Assumption. I was announced that the celebrating priest would be late as he had morning mass in a town about 20 miles to the south. “No biggie” I thought.” The Hospital chapel is always quiet with hardly any chit chat before Mass. I appreciated the extra minutes of sacred silence to pray or silently sign a hymn.

Father arrived an apologized. Knowing people had only half an hour lunch and that the chapel was full for the Holy Day, he said quick Homily (less than two minutes) on The Blessed Virgin. Then during the Communion Rite, he wished us Peace and went right to the Agnus Dei. To save time he skipped the sign of peace!

Here is what struck me: I immediately noticed how seamless the Communion Rite felt without the interruption of glad-handing among the congregation. The noise and movement didn’t break up the Mass like a rain delay at a ball game.

The sign of peace is one of the things about the Novus Ordo that annoys me the most.

Do you remember that poll I posted some time ago?  I’ll re-post it: new poll, but with same questions.

2nd ROUND: The "sign of peace" during Mass in the Ordinary Form...

Irish Govt. to force Catholics to perform abortions. Law allows for no exception or conscience objection.

From the Dignitatis Humanae Institute:

Irish Government Set To Compel Catholic Doctors To Perform Abortions

Rome, 16 August 2013

“Even nations with the most permissive abortion laws do not normally go so far as to trample on the basic right to conscientious objection.” So said Luca Volontè, Chairman of the Dignitatis Humanae Institute in a statement earlier today.

Volontè continued: “This bill claims human rights apply only to human beings, and not to institutions. But such a manipulative attempt at semantics casually disregards what it is that defines an institution, particularly a healthcare provider – at its core is an ethos, and individual employees who are dedicated to fulfilling that ethos. Far from seeking to maintain an amoral healthcare system, this bill will impose a new morality upon hospitals and those who serve in them, one which allows for no objection and uses all the authority of the State against any who would refuse to be accomplice to a clear moral evil.”

The option of abortion in Ireland will soon become a requirement for proscribed hospitals, regardless of religious ethos or conscientious objection. The Irish abortion bill, pseudonym: “Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill” explicitly denies the right of conscientious objection and enforces a no right to refuse condition upon 25 Hospitals, two of which are Catholic.

Recalling his work as the President of the European People’s Party (the largest party) in the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly in Strasbourg, Luca Volontè added: “PACE Resolution 1763 clearly states:

No person, hospital or institution shall be coerced, held liable or discriminated against in any manner because of a refusal to perform, accommodate, assist or submit to an abortion, the performance of a human miscarriage, or euthanasia or any act which could cause the death of a human foetus or embryo, for any reason.

Such compulsion would be unprecedented in Ireland, and has been successfully challenged recently elsewhere.”

In April this year, a Scottish Court ruled in the ‘Doogan & Anor v NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board’ trial that two midwives could not be required to delegate, support or supervise staff who were involved in abortions.

Despite repeated refusals from the Irish Department of Health to work out an accommodation, Luca Volontè spoke of his hope for changes to the proposed law: “It is not unreasonable to ask for exemptions for staff (or institutions) on the grounds of conscience, whether they be religious or ethical; such accommodation is provided in many other Western nations which practice abortion. Freedom of thought and/or conscience is not only guaranteed by international law, it is innate to our human dignity. It is truly shocking to see the government of an advanced Western country trying to deny the basic human rights of its own citizens like this.”

Coming to a Catholic hospital near you.

And though it won’t begin with the arrest of those who refuse to participate in abortions, but it will end there.

At the LCWR Woodstock in Orlando the sisters learn that “we are stardust”.

The LCWR Woodstock 2013 has begun at Yasgur’s Farm … er… the Caribe Royale Resort near Disney World in Orlando.

Today they had a talk from their featured speaker, Sr. Ilia Delio, OSF.

Excerpts from the National Catholic Register coverage:

LCWR Keynote Speaker Advocates ‘Cosmological Rethink’ of Religion

Sister Ilia Delio discusses an ‘evolutionary’ approach with the women religious gathered in Orlando for the group’s 2013 annual assembly.

ORLANDO — Sister of St. Francis Ilia Delio, melding science and theology, took her fellow women religious on a journey through the cosmos yesterday in her two-part keynote speech, “Religious Life on the Edge of the Universe,” [I guess being on the edge of the bus seat isn’t enough.] at the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) here. In the second part, following lunch, Sister Ilia emphasized love and authenticity.
“If we are to rethink in terms of religion, we have to think in terms of cosmology,” Sister Ilia said.  [and… obedience?]
“We have to understand the order of the whole,” adding, “There is no cosmos without God, and no God without cosmos.” [Ummm… hey… Sister? I hate to break this to you, but… not really.]
Sister Ilia, director of Catholic studies and visiting professor at Georgetown University in Washington, has a doctorate in pharmacology [!] as well as historical theology. [How about pharmacological theology?]
The 825 attendees of the LCWR 2013 assembly — titled “Leadership Evolving: Graced, Grounded & Free” — listened as Sister Ilia discussed the evolving philosophical, theological and scientific theories that she said are shaping man’s [ooops] outlook of God and nature.
Dionysius [I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and guess that she doesn’t mean the god of wine.] proposed everything has its place in the spiritual order, Sister Ilia said. What brought about disorder? Laughter ensued when Sister Ilia stated, “It was sin that led to disorder, and it was attributed to a woman who shows up in Genesis and was never heard from again.” [Why not pick on Adam?]
A mixture of Scripture, philosophy from Plato and other Greek thinkers helped develop our theory of Jesus Christ — unchanging, static — a mechanical God.
Sir Isaac Newton contributed a world of law and order where everything is autonomous and related. Sister Ilia remarked that Newton’s God is the “Florida God. He charges it up, sets it in motion and then retires — probably to Orlando.”
The audience again laughed. [Meanwhile, on this blog…]
Sister Ilia’s description of her belief as a young postulant about keeping order brought nods of affirmation. “As a postulant I thought — ‘If I pray and obey, I can keep my part.’” [But that’s so… non-cosmic.]
God is more than mechanical, and the universe is far from static. “We have an incredible, dynamic, expanding universe. Simply from the point of science, this is awesome,” Sister Ilia said, adding, “Literally, we are stardust.” [Groovy.]

[CUE MUSIC!

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, “Where are you going?”
And this he told me…
.
I’m going on down to Yasgur’s Farm,
I’m gonna join in a rock and roll band.
I’m gonna camp out on the land.
I’m gonna get my soul free.
.
We are stardust.
We are golden.
And we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.
.
Then can I walk beside you?
I have come here to lose the smog,
And I feel to be a cog in something turning.
.
Well maybe it is just the time of year,
Or maybe it’s the time of man.
I don’t know who I am,
But you know life is for learning.
.
We are stardust.
We are golden.
And we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.
.
By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And Everywhere there was song and celebration.
.
And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky,
And they were turning into butterflies
Above our nation.
.
We are stardust.
Billion year old carbon.
We are golden..
Caught in the devil’s bargain
And we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden.]

Teilhardian Ideas

Sister Ilia is a devotee of Jesuit scholar Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and his theories on evolution and love, reminding the audience the Church is not opposed to evolution.

[…]

‘Giving Birth to God’

Ending her presentation, Sister Ilia reminded the attendees, “God is within and up ahead — not above. God is the power of the future. To rest on God is to rest on the future.”
Nothing is more awesome than to give birth to God,” she said.  [Ehem… I think only one person knows about that.]

[…]

Groovy.

I look forward to the complete transcript of her 2.5 hour presentation.

Oddly, the Fishwrap’s coverage didn’t mention the connection with Teilhard.

I’m still hurt that the nuns rejected me.

Will Pope Francis jump over the regular process and declare Pius XII is a saint?

In related news see my post: REVIEW: Great book of documentary evidence about the Pontificate of Ven. Pius XII

From CNA:

Pope Francis thinking about declaring Pius XII a saint
By Andrea Gagliarducci

Vatican City, Jul 31, 2013 / 11:05 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis is considering whether he will make Pope Pius XII a saint, in the same way that he approved the cause of John XXIII.

A source who works at the Vatican’s Congregation for Causes of Saints, who asked for anonymity, told CNA July 25 that “just as Pope Francis moved ahead with John XXIII’s canonization, he is considering the same thing for Pius XII.”

According to the normal procedures, Pius XII would be beatified once a miracle attributed to his intercession is officially certified by a team of doctors and recognized by a commission of cardinals.

But if Pope Francis decides to go ahead without a miracle, [Please, Lord, let there be a miracle!] he could “even canonize him with the formula of scientia certa (certainty in knowledge), thereby jumping over the step of beatification,” the source said. [The procedure we have… or at least had … was pretty darn good.]

“Only the Pope is able to do it, and he will, if he wants to.”

Pope Francis is very interested in Pius XII because “he considers him ‘a great,’ in the same way as John XXIII is, even if for different reasons,” the source explained.

But there is also a historical reason that Pope Francis is interested in Pius XII.

When Pope Paul VI started the beatification and canonization process in 1967, nine years after Pius XII’s death, he formed a committee of historians to conduct an in-depth study of his predecessor’s life and behavior, giving particular attention to the events of World War II.

The committee was made up of four Jesuits: Fathers Pierre Blet (France), Angelo Martini (Italy), Burkhart Schneider (Germany), and Robert A. Graham (United States).

Their work led to the publication of “Actes et Documents du Saint Siège relatifs à la Seconde Guerre Mondiale” (Acts and Documents of the Holy See related to the Second World War), an 11-volume collection of documents from the Vatican’s Secret Archive about Pius XII’s papacy during that tumultuous time.

Yet, the remainder of the documents from Pius XII’s papacy is not expected to be released until 2014 – the time it will take to organize the papers.

The completed catalog will include approximately 16 million documents from Pius XII’s papacy (1939-1958).

Pope Benedict XVI initially decided to postpone Pius XII’s cause for sainthood and advocated waiting until the archives would be open for researchers in 2014.

But Benedict changed his mind and declared Pius XII Venerable on Dec. 19, 2009, based on the recommendation of the committee investigating his cause.

[…]

There is quite a bit more, but you can read it there.

What I want to see are two miracles through the intercession of Ven. Pius XII before a Beatification and Canonization and I would also hope to see, soon, is Pius XII, Eugenio Pacelli, declared by the State of Israel to be a חסידי אומות העולם‎ … khassidey umot ha-olam … “Righteous Among The Nations”.

RECENT POSTS and THANKS

I have posted a lot recently and some entries have slithered out of view.  Here are some links to recent posts.

First, please check daily YOUR URGENT PRAYER REQUESTS

And now…

A housekeeping note: If you register to be able to comment here, be mindful of that “about yourself” field in the registration form.  I use that to determine whether or not you are a vile spammer or a real, sincere person.  I don’t automatically approve registrations that don’t immediately put me at ease.

Also, I am taking some ads.  I am not cheap but I do get around 750k page views a month.

Now it is my pleasure to express thanks to some of you.

First, I am glad that more than one of you nagged me into getting my Ham Radio license (Technician).  I am now also practicing Morse Code and looking at the materials for the General exam.

Also, thanks for the voice mails through skype (see side bar). I do listen to them.  However, to the nice lady who keeps calling me to put in orders of Mystic Monk Coffee… No, ma’am.  I’m not the guy to order from. Use the link to Mystic Monk Coffee on the side bar.

I am grateful to those of you who have sent items from my amazon wish lists (both the regular one and the Kindle wishlist).  Alas, amazon doesn’t always include a packing slip with the name of the person who sends stuff from the regular list.  But God knows who you are and I include you, whoever you are, in my prayers.  Those of you who send Kindle books: I can see your names but there is no email address for you in the email alert I get from amazon.  Sometimes I can look you up if you have posted comments.  But I include you on my list of benefactors for the month when I say Mass.

Ditto to those of you who have sent amazon gift cards!

I am also grateful to those of you who are sending donations, either by using the donation button on the side bar or who have subscribed to donate each month (there is a gizmo for that at the foot on the blog’s page).  It is interesting to see that, over the last couple of years, most of the donations that come in now are through that monthly option.

With the rather large traffic we get here, I often muse about what might result were even 2% of you to sign on for a small monthly donation.  Now that you know that I muse about that, perhaps you also will muse about that.

Shifting gears for a moment, thanks for the support you give to the Wyoming Carmelites by buying coffee and tea, to the Dominican sisters who make soap, and to the Benedictine and Dominican sisters who produced those fine music discs.  You really helped their sales, which means you really helped their communities get on.

Speaking of my Masses for benefactors, including donors and stuff-senders, I will say Mass for the intention of benefactors (always including KA, DY and GS) on Saturday 18 August in the morning.  It is my pleasure and my duty to pray for those who send me material help. Most of my income derives from what this blog generates.  Of the wishlist stuff, however, in the last few months I have received

Ballistol, cleaning patches and targets, a volume of poems up to 1962 by T.S. Eliot, Discourses by Bonomelli,  The Sacred Rights of Conscience: Selected Readings on Religious Liberty and Church-State Relations in the American Founding by Dreisbach, Liberating Black Theology: The Bible and the Black Experience in America by Bradley,  A Meaningful World: How the Arts and Sciences Reveal the Genius of Nature by Wicker (I like how this guy explains things), Abuse of Language Abuse of Power by Pieper, The Truth About Lying: How to Spot a Lie and Protect Yourself from Deception by Walters and there there is the DESK! My desk area was a complete train wreck. I put a new desk on the wish list and BAM it came! It came without an instruction manual for putting it together as well. I eventually found one online and put it together one after noon. It is a little easier to work now and it is not such an eyesore in my room. I was using folding plastic tables from Sam’s Club. Also of great note and utility, some kind soul, I don’t know who, sent my the 3 volumes of Weller’s translation (with the Latin side-by-side) of the Roman Ritual. Believe it or not, I did have it. I also got some heat shrink wire wrap sleeves and a mini heat gun. I will eventually put together my own connections for a “go bag” for a portable ham radio rig, with power source etc. I’ll probably use Anderson power poles.  Be prepared, friends.

Another thing: I am also grateful for email notes in which you say that something from this blog helped you or someone else.  Those notes mean a lot to me!

So…. thanks for the good DX KC9ZJN 73

Msgr. Bux: Pope Francis will not restrict the Traditional Roman Rite

At the site of The Remnant there is a piece which quotes the great Msgr. Nicola Bux on Pope Francis’ attitude about the older, traditional forms of the Roman Rite.

Vatican Consultant Says Pope Will Not Hamper Traditional Latin Mass

By Alberto Carosa

ROME – The Mass in the Roman rite according to the pre-conciliar Missal of 1962 will continue to be freely celebrated without any limitation by Pope Francis. This is the opinion of renowned theologian and liturgist, Don Nicola Bux, as expressed in a recent interview in the Neapolitan daily Roma and reported in various news outlets.

“The movement in favour of the traditional liturgy will certainly continue because the succession of Popes does not break the continuity of tradition and he who succeeds to a predecessor does not invent the Church again”, said don Bux, who is also a consultant to the Congregation for Divine Worship and well respected in tradition-minded circles. “Sometimes it is believed that the Pope, in his office, must make his personal views prevail, but this would be quite worrisome. It is clear that every Pontiff has his own temperament and history, and it is not these that are to prevail, but always the good of the Church. The Pope is a minister, but he is not the master, as was also reiterated by the current Pontiff”.

And what about Pope Francis’s attitude toward the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum? Well when he was Bishop of Buenos Aires, according to don Bux, Cardinal Bergoglio did “not hamper the application of the Motu Proprio“.

[NB] The interest in the traditional liturgy, don Bux contends, is also linked to the new evangelization. [Do I hear an “Amen!”?] “In the present moment of grave crisis of faith, a mystical liturgy celebrated with dignity can be a great help for people searching to find God. Historically, great converts were struck by grace while attending solemn rites and listening to extraordinary chants”.

[…]

I can attest to that.

The article goes on to talk about a pilgrimage to Rome in October. Last year I was able to go because of the generosity of readers here who sent me donations (on which I greatly depend). This year the organizers have a partnership with Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi.

“ac Nostra”

His Hermeneuticalness, Fr. Finigan, makes a great point in a post about Ven. Pius XII’s infallible proclamation of the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1950.

It has to do with the words “ac Nostra“.

Go over there and see!

(I’ll close the combox on this one. Make his traffic stats spike today.)

This is amazing.

Meet Grasshopper.

Grasshopper (aka Falcon 9 by Spacex) had a test flight on 13 August.  It flew to an altitude of 250m with a lateral offset of 100m and then maneuvered back to its launch pad.

Well done, Grasshopper. You have learned to return to your balancing point.

Yet another attempt by homosexuals to whip up negative press to force the Church to conform

can. 915In more Rhode Island news, I read at Life News that Fr. Brian Sistare, who recently sent out a challenge to RI Catholic lawmakers (HERE) has now told a same-sex “married” couple of men that they cannot receive Holy Communion.

Fr. Sistare is clearly in the right about this and he is obliged by the Church’s law to convey this message to them.  Can. 915 says: Those who… [are] persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion”

Let’s see if this case fits the description:

Gay ‘married’ couple denied Communion in Rhode Island parish
BY JOHANNA DASTEEL

WOONSOCKET, RI, August 13, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Two Rhode Island men were told by their priest that, because of their same-sex “marriage,” he could no longer give them Communion, according to local news reports.

Lew Pryeor and Pierre Laveillee were “married” in 2007 [A PUBLIC act.  That makes it “manifest”. Moreover, they are clearly still self-identifying as “married”.  And now they are going to the media on their own.] and have been parishioners at Sacred Heart for two years.

However, Fr. Brian Sistare at Sacred Heart Church has challenged the couple to conform to the Catholic Church’s teaching, which says that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

The subject reportedly arose during a meeting Pryeor had requested with Fr. Sistane on Monday. Both Pryeor and Laveillee told the media [as mentioned] they were upset with the “new young priest” delivering homilies critical of Rhode Island Democratic Governor Lincoln Chaffee and the Democratic Party. [NB: They frame it in political terms.]

[…]

Pryeor complained the sermons are “pushing people away” [and?] and that Fr. Sistane “should not be a priest but he should be a politician.” [blah blah blah Liberals are always accusing clerics who stick to the Church’s teachings of being “political” because that is the lens through which liberals see the world.]

The criticisms hit close to home for Lew Pryeor on more than one front. He ran for the Rhode Island Senate as a Democrat in 2012 and was endorsed by Fight Back Rhode Island, a same-sex “marriage” advocacy group. Pryeor lost to incumbent Marc Cote, who has voted against both civil unions and same-sex “marriages.” [The plot thickens.  This “couple” is thick with homosexual activists.  Therefore, I think we have to assume that even his request for a meeting with Fr. Sistane had nothing to do with actual interest in Communion and had everything to do with setting up the priest for a media blitz.]

Pryeor has turned to his Facebook community for support, posting that he could not “get communion anymore” at Sacred Heart. [Yes, actually, he can.  He can abjure, PUBLICLY, his “marriage” and then begin to live a continent life.]

[…]

His Facebook supporters have encouraged Pryeor to “fight” the priest’s decision in hopes that [Are you paying attention?…] the negative publicity will pressure the church to back down and give communion to homosexuals who publicly flout its teachings on homosexuality.  [Get that?]

One woman encouraged him, “Lew, if you challenge this Fr. Sistare, I’ll bet you will be able to keep going to this same church AND receive communion!” She added, “that would make headlines!!!”
