A note to Vatican Radio/CTV: thanks and a request

Vatican RadioVatican Radio and Vatican TV (CTV or Centro Televisivo Vaticano) has been, finally, providing a video channel with the “raw” feed without voice-over commentary in various languages.

They are to be applauded!  Thank you, thank you!

I was, for example, about to watch 1st Vespers of Mary Mother of God without the yaking.   I believe this morning Mass for Epiphany was also available without the voice-over.   Keep in mind that the voice-over of these video broadcasts came from Vatican RADIO…. RADIO…. no pictures, right?  With video you don’t need as much commentary as for Radio.  And some of us didn’t want any at all.  Well… now we have what we wanted.

In any event, now that Vatican Radio and CTV have provided this great service… they need to start

…archiving their video broadcasts.

If they could make a video broadcast, without commentary, available for at least one week after the event, that would be a great service.

It is nice to have the broadcast live.   However, let them also make the broadcasts available for people who are not in the same time zone as Rome, or who must miss the live feed broadcast.

Pretty please?   At least one week?

This is where you readers come in.

The website of Vatican Radio is still an unintegrated mess, so it is hard to find the best email address for your kind notes of thanks and encouragement.  Try this:

english@vatiradio.va

It’ll take just a moment.

Sample text:

Thank you for providing live audio and video streams of the Holy Father’s activities.  Thank you for adding the option to watch the video stream without commentary.

Will you please consider archiving the video broadcasts for at least one week?  In this way many more people will benefit from your good work and from the Holy Father’s good example, especially in the sacred liturgy.

Many thanks again and prayerful best wishes for your important apostolate,

[YOUR NAME]

They have a donation page.   After making a donation to WDTPRS, you might try them as well if you listen to or watch their stream.

C’mon WDTPRSers!  See if you can make a dent!

QUAERITUR: MASONS! IN THE SANCTUARY! AIYEEEE!

From a reader:

There is a Freemason in my parish [AIYEEE!??] – yes he is Catholic.  [Say it ain’t so!] He is known as a Freemason to many people and he, despite the Church’s clear teachings on the subject, does not feel it is wrong for him to be both a Freemason and a Catholic. He feels his local lodge is not anti-Catholic so he is comfortable with his club of “old men”. Several of my friends and I have discussed this with him on a couple of occasions, even in front of the pastor in an informal setting. The pastor of our parish knows that he is a Freemason, and he continues to let him serve often as a Sacristan, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and he partakes of the Holy Eucharist. What, if anything, should be done about this situation when it seems  that the pastor does not care if he is a Freemason or not. [Maybe heeeeeees one tooooo….]

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a document called “Declaration on Masonic Associations“.

Declaration on Masonic Associations

It has been asked whether there has been any change in the Church’s decision in regard to Masonic associations since the new Code of Canon Law does not mention them expressly, unlike the previous Code.

This Sacred Congregation is in a position to reply that this circumstance in due to an editorial criterion which was followed also in the case of other associations likewise unmentioned inasmuch as they are contained in wider categories.

Therefore the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. The faithful who enrol in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion. [Get that?]

It is not within the competence of local ecclesiastical authorities to give a judgment on the nature of Masonic associations which would imply a derogation from what has been decided above, and this in line with the Declaration of this Sacred Congregation issued on 17 February 1981 (cf. AAS 73 1981 pp. 240-241; English language edition of L’Osservatore Romano, 9 March 1981). [Bishops and pastors can’t decide to the contrary.]

In an audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect, the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II approved and ordered the publication of this Declaration which had been decided in an ordinary meeting of this Sacred Congregation.

Rome, from the Office of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 26 November 1983.

Joseph Card. RATZINGER
Prefect

+ Fr. Jerome Hamer, O.P.
Titular Archbishop of Lorium
Secretary

If this fellow is a Mason, and if he is publicly known to be a mason, and if the pastor has been told, and if, indeed, he is acting in liturgical roles, and if he is receiving Holy Communion, then the bishop must be informed.

I suggest writing to the bishop with a copy to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

I very much doubt it will be ignored.

In the meantime, make sure he hasn’t hidden secret manuscripts under the altar.  Look for secret signs scratched around the base.  If necessary, for a fee and the promise of a few car chases, I should be able to help locate the missing clues.  I am, after all, a certified symbologist.

QUAERITUR: Can I fullfil my Sunday obligation on Saturday evening?

From a reader:

I’ll be pithy:

I’ll start my final semester of nursing school next week, it appears as though I will be required to train in the hospital for the next four months from 7am-7pm every Sunday. Is it possible to keep the holy the Lord’s Day by attending Saturday Vigil Mass, or should I dig in my heels and fight this requirement? (I attend a very secular school that almost appears to be anti-Christian, so, there is little sympathy for my position from the administration.) Thank you, Sophia P.S. I feel greatly blessed by the opportunity to read your blog daily, thank you, and may God bless you with great love.

I’ll be pithy.

You fulfill your obligation by going to Mass on the Saturday evening before or the evening before other days of obligation.

Canon 1248 says:

1. The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day.

QUAERITUR: An EMHC told us not to kneel and shook her head at us

From a reader:

I have something that has really been bothering me that maybe you could help me with if you find the time.I am not trying to “tattle” or nit pick anything, but I am very uncomfortable with this and not sure if I did the right thing(I am a fairly recent convert). I attended Christmas Eve Mass with my family at the church they usually go to and we had to sit in the front pew as there were quite a few people attending. We knelt during communion, but were told by the EMHC [Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion] to “get up off the floor and sit down because we were in the way“.

Granted there were a lot of people there, but we were very careful to be extremely close to the pew on the floor so as not to be in the way (lest you think we were in the middle of the aisle). We didn’t want to make a scene so we did sit, but once everyone was done walking through the aisle we knelt again because Jesus was not in the tabernacle yet.

The EMHC sighed at us and shook her head. Then after church she told us if she told us to sit we did not have to kneel again after communion. I tried to explain why we had knelt again but she shook her head and walked away.

I am not worried about what the EMCH thinks about it, but if I was disrespectful to the Lord by sitting. What is the right thing to do in that situation?

You were within your right to kneel.   A quick reading of Redemptionis Sacramentum 90 and following confirms this.

Also, it is necessary to be sensitive to your surroundings.  Don’t get in the way if people need to walk where you are.  So, be careful of that.

Still, that EMHC was wayyyyy out of line.  That is not her role.  Her role, which may or may not be truly needed (cf. Ecclesia de mysterio) is to distribute Communion according to the Church’s directives.  Beyond that she can keep her mouth shut and nose out of other people’s prayers.

For the time being, don’t make a scene.

On the other hand, this is not the sort of thing that ought simply to be ignored.

I would write a note to the pastor of the parish, sending a copy to the bishop.

It seems to me that the pastor, if he is sensitive to the gravity of an EMHC doing this, will desire to deal with it quietly.  That is fine.  If you get some note back saying that he agrees with the EMHC, send the note to the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome for their “opportune knowledge”.

Catholic League responds to Huffington Post

With a title like that, you know it ain’t gonna be pretty.

From the Catholic League:

HUFFINGTON POST BLOGGER DEFAMES CATHOLICISM

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on a Huffington Post blog post by Michele Somerville about New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo:

Michele Somerville is not just another professed Catholic who has a pathological hatred of the Catholic Church: she is a liar. Regarding the first point, she says she likes Andrew Cuomo because he is just like his father—he’s a “protest Catholic.” By that she means someone who identifies himself as a Catholic, yet defies the teachings of the Church. In the case of Cuomo the elder, she cites his pro-abortion position. What she likes about Andrew Cuomo is more chic: “I love that my new governor stepped up to the altar of the Lord [last Sunday] with confidence and received the Sacrament of the Eucharist with his beloved [an unmarried woman with whom he lives] and three daughters in tow.

Speaking of the two Cuomos, Somerville says, “there is no other morally responsible way to be Roman Catholic.” That’s because she hates their religion, which she says is “propped up by corruption and tyranny,” and was partly built by “hegemony and brutality.”

Somerville also says the Catholic League “classifies men like Andrew Cuomo (who divorce and continue to receive the sacraments) ‘self-excommunicated Catholics.'” Thus does she lie. On January 1, in a New York Daily News story, Frank Lombardi correctly said, “Even outspoken Catholic activist Bill Donohue of the Catholic League passed on a chance to decry what some religious conservatives would deem ‘living in sin.’ Donohue declined to be interviewed, saying through a spokesman, ‘We’re not one to pass judgment’ on how people conduct their personal life ‘or how people celebrate their religion.'” Somerville provided a link to this article in her piece, thus proving she is a liar.

FOLLOW UP: Wisconsin parish which was robbed of its Christmas collection

Remember the story about Christmas collection robbed from the Catholic parish in Chippewa Falls, WI?

I received this note from a reader:

Chippewa Falls (Press Release from Fr. William Felix, Pastor of St. Charles Catholic Church) –  At this time we still know very little about any further progress in the investigation; however, due to the response of people for the orphans at Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II in Peru, two checks will be presented to Fr. Roger Scheckel, director of the Missions Office of the Diocese of LaCrosse representing Fr. Sabastian Kolodziejczyk, director of Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II. These checks are estimated to approach $20,000, perhaps four times the amount of the original collection at Christmas.

Fr. William Felix, pastor of St. Charles Borromeo, will present one check, and Pastor Scott Miller of First Lutheran Church will present the second check of $4,000 as a matching gift from his congregation.

Fr. Sabastian has recognized a more-than-usual increase in donations on their orphanage website in Peru due to this story. He will send us an approximate report of those donations as well.

As an update, contributions have come in recently from as far away as Connecticut and Florida, with calls from Texas and California.

ABC 18 Eau Claire

Thank you Father for posting about this!  I am certain you helped inspire many to donate.

Card. Pell on small-c catholic politicians

From CNA:

Cardinal Pell corrects politicians who claim to be Catholic but vote differently

Sydney, Australia, Jan 5, 2011 / 05:31 am (CNA).- As the country faces intense legislative debate this upcoming year over same-sex “marriage” and euthanasia, Cardinal George Pell of Sydney blasted politicians who claim a Catholic identity, yet consistently defy Church teachings on major issues.

In a Jan. 4 interview with the Sunday Herald Sun, Cardinal Pell gave a sharp rebuke to Australian members of parliament who “fly under the Christian or Captain Catholic flag” but “blithely disregard Christian perspectives” in their actions.

“If a person says, ‘Look, I’m not a Christian, I’ve a different set of perspectives,’ I disagree but I understand,” he said. “If a person says to me, ‘Look, I’m nominally a Christian but it sits lightly with me,’ I understand that.”

“But it’s incongruous for somebody to be a Captain Catholic one minute, saying they’re as good a Catholic as the Pope, then regularly voting against the established Christian traditions.”

Cardinal Pell called out politicians who endorse secular stances on issues while insisting that they’re Catholics, saying, “if you’re espousing something that’s not a Christian position, don’t claim Christian backing for that.

The Catholic Church “doesn’t teach the primacy of conscience,” he said, explaining that a person’s conscience doesn’t trump Church teaching. “You know if somebody said apartheid was all right, nobody would say, ‘Yes you can say that because of the primacy of conscience.'”

“To the extent that on a significant number of issues you depart from Christian teachings you know it’s incongruous to be billing yourself as a champion of Christian rights,” he said.

“I’m not telling people how to vote,” he underscored during the interview. “I’m telling people how I think they should vote. I’m an Australian citizen and I have as much right to do that as any other citizen.”

Card. Pell for Secretary of State… just for few years, …. please?

I would like to hear his views on can 915.

“The ultimate dark wherein the race shall die.”

Via the Laudator:

Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953), January:

It freezes—all across a soundless sky
The birds go home. The governing dark’s begun:
The steadfast dark that waits not for a sun;
The ultimate dark wherein the race shall die.

Death, with his evil finger to his lip,
Leers in at human windows, turning spy
To learn the country where his rule shall lie
When he assumes perpetual generalship.

The undefeated enemy, the chill
That shall benumb the voiceful earth at last,
Is master of our moment, and has bound
The viewless wind itself. There is no sound.
It freezes. Every friendly stream is fast.
It freezes; and the graven twigs are still.

L.A. Attorney: Many Abuse Accusations Against Catholic Priests Are ‘Entirely False’

This is something we all knew had to be the case.  From Newsbusters.

My emphases :

Where’s the Media? L.A. Att’y Declares Many Abuse Accusations Against Catholic Priests Are ‘Entirely False’

By Dave Pierre

In a stunning ten-page declaration recently submitted to the Los Angeles County Superior Court, veteran attorney Donald H. Steier stated that his investigations into claims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests have uncovered vast fraud and that his probes have revealed that many accusations are completely false.

Counselor Steier has played a role in over one hundred investigations involving Catholic clergy in Los Angeles. In his missive Mr. Steier relayed, “One retired F.B.I. agent who worked with me to investigate many claims in the Clergy Cases told me, in his opinion, about ONE-HALF of the claims made in the Clergy Cases were either entirely false or so greatly exaggerated that the truth would not have supported a prosecutable claim for childhood sexual abuse” (capital letters are his).

Mr. Steier also added, “In several cases my investigation has provided objective information that could not be reconciled with the truthfulness of the subjective allegations. In other words, in many cases objective facts showed that accusations were false.”

Mr. Steier’s declaration is a stunner. He is as experienced as anyone in studying the claims of abuse against Catholic clergy in the Los Angeles area. Also among Steier’s eye-opening statements:

* “I have had accused priest clients take polygraph examinations performed by very experienced former law enforcement experts, including from L.A.P.D., the Sheriff Department, and F.B.I. In many cases the examinations showed my clients’ denial of wrongdoing was ‘truthful,’ and in those cases I offered in writing to the accuser to undergo a similar polygraph examination at my expense. In every case the accuser refused to have his veracity tested by that investigative tool, which is routinely used by intelligence agencies.”
* “I am aware of several plaintiffs who testified that they realized that they had been abused only after learning that some other person – sometimes a relative – had received a financial settlement from the Archdiocese or another Catholic institution.”
* “In my investigation of many cases, I have seen the stories of some accusers change significantly over time, sometimes altering years, locations, and what activity was alleged – in every case, the changes seemed to have enabled or enhanced claims against my clients, or drastically increased alleged damages.”
* “I am aware that false memories can also be planted or created by various psychological processes, including by therapists who might be characterized as ‘sexual victim advocates,’ if not outright charlatans.”
* “Most of the approximately seven hundred psychiatric ‘Certificates of Merit’ filed in these Clergy Cases, as required by [California] Code of Civil Procedure § 340.1, were signed by the same therapist.” (!) (Note: A “Certificate of Merit” from “a licensed mental health practitioner” is required in California before filing an abuse lawsuit.)

Steier signed and submitted the declaration “under penalty of perjury” November 30, 2010. Los Angeles County Superior Court officially filed it at 11 a.m. on December 15, 2010. (Images of Steier’s declaration: pages 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10.)

Steier also took aim at the outspoken advocacy group SNAP (Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests):

They maintain an interactive Internet website with a user ‘Forum’ and ‘Message Board,’ among other features, where people can share detailed information between alleged victims pertaining to identity of specific alleged perpetrators, their alleged ‘modus operandi,’ and other details of alleged molestation. In effect, a person who wanted to make a false claim of sexual abuse by a priest could go to that website and find a ‘blueprint’ of factual allegations to make that would coincide with allegations made by other people. Law enforcement also uses the S.N.A.P. website to attempt to locate new victims and allegations against Catholic priests.

Needless to say, SNAP had a fit at the sight of Steier’s declaration. In a frantic press statement dated December 13, 2010, SNAP derided Steier’s declaration as a “legal maneuver” that was “among the most outrageous and hurtful ever made by a church defense lawyer.” In addition to claiming it will file a complaint with the California Bar Association, it demanded that Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony “denounce Steier’s claims and to disclose how much archdiocesan money has been paid to Steier.” (Gee, the last time I checked, SNAP steadfastly refused to divulge how much of its income is derived from the number of lawyers with whom it closely collaborates!)

Yet there is a glaring absence from SNAP’s statement. The organization does not refute nor deny any of the specific claims made by Steier. It simply labels them as “outrageous” and “hurtful.” That is hardly a blow to the explosive declaration aired by the veteran attorney.

Yes, Catholic priests terribly abused minors, and bishops failed to stop the harm. That’s an undeniable truth. There are few crimes that revolt more than sexual abuse. The abuse of minors is a dark episode that the Church will forever have to live with.

Yet major media outlets have largely ignored a major element to the entire Catholic abuse scandal narrative.

[…]

Read the rest there… and weep for the harm and injustice done.
