There was a partial solar eclipse of the sun yesterday.

How often do you see a rising crescent sun?

Way cool on the crescent sun! Looks Apocalyptic!
Oh come on that is just a TIE fighter crossing a glowing Deathstar.
That’s no space station…that’s a TIE/ln Fighter!
I’d like to see a total eclipse of the sun one of these days. When I was a kid, we had a partial eclipse back home. It was quite odd, because the light was dim, as though it were cloudy out; but everything cast sharp shadows, just as in full sunlight.
just too coool!! thanks
Man could not have Photoshopped a better image!
Fr. Z,
I believe the correct way to say it is that the ISS transited the eclipsed Sun.
@ejcmartin: I guess you beat me to it! I hadn’t seen your comment when I posted.
Anita,
Hang around till 2017 and you’ll see a total eclipse in the U.S. mainland. Standing in the shadow of the moon is ineffable.
Anita,
Actually you will have TWO shots at seeing a total solar eclipse on the U.S. mainland if you hang around for another 13 years…. there’s the one in 2017 and another in 2024. The totality paths of both cross in southern Illinois near Carbondale so the lucky blokes there get to see two eclipses in seven years.
Here’s a map showing exactly where both totality paths cross:

It probably isn’t too early to start praying for good weather on both days :-) Nor would I be surprised to find that eclipse buffs have already started making reservations at local motels, B&Bs, etc.
It had been snowing all night here in Finland, but miraculously it cleared in the morning, we had the first clear day for weeks yesterday, and I as able to see the eclipsed sun just after it had risen!
Wow-those pictures ARE tooo coool! Especially the one of the space station crossing in front of the sun!
Yeah, it does look like the Alliance ships from ‘Star Wars’!
The ‘crescent’ looks spooky!

I know exactly what you are talking about, though I don’t remember if the eclipse I experienced was partial or not. I grew up in the far northern sticks of Montana & I don’t know if the location played a part in it, but I recall thinking it looked like night time the way night time looks in those old TV shows from the ’70’s. If anyone knows what I’m talking about :)
It is hard to explain! Not dark of the night dark, but like dark sunlight. Very cool.
Alas, no star-ships. Dangit!
