Spiffing NEW OLD Book! A Limerickal Commentary on the Second Vatican Council

I received from the fascinating little Arouca Press, founded on the anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun, a truly amazing little tome.  It’s greatly appreciated, though I have a serious complaint about it.  More on that, below.

A Limerickal Commentary on the Second Vatican Council
by Hugh Somerville Knapman (Editor), George Cardinal Pell (Foreword)

US HERE – UK HERE

This is a book of limericks written by Anglophone bishops at the Second Vatican Council about the goings on and topics discussed and people involved with the Council.

In LATIN.

They are hilarious, for the most part, and very clever.  In hindsight, they also give insight to what was going on behind the scenes.   So, this is an old work, but newly presented.

Don’t worry, there are English versions – also clever limericks in themselves – on the facing page.

A couple of examples:

First, check out this one which mentions that old heretic Hans Kung, a peritus, and another about the ghastly Suenens, and one about Pericle Felice.

Since I have been involved with translation for a while, this is apt.

There are helpful notes which guide the reader many years after the fact.

The introduction explains the discovery of the type written pages in a Benedictine Abbey and how they came to be edited and published.

My biretta is – as I write – tipped with admiration to the editor, Fr. Hugh Somerville Knapman, OSB, who has a blog Dominus Mihi Adiutor.

Books have been pouring in, and I promised myself to start posting about them.

I had to start with this one first.

Oh yes… my COMPLAINT.

The book is TOO SHORT!

Not all is dark in the Church. Tradition is flooding back!

Remember that “survey” that the CDF wanted to make of the world’s bishops about the use of the “Extraordinary Form” and matters concerning Summorum Pontificum?

Keep your heads cool.  Don’t panic.

Christian Marquant reacts post factum in the Paix Liturgique newsletter there is an interesting tid bit.

First, a refresher.  I’ve been writing for a while now that, even as availability and frequency of the Traditional Roman Rite is growing, there is a demographic sinkhole opening under the Church into which the “nones” and the tepid, the “beige” will soon fall.  This is exacerbated by COVID-1984.  Also, the clock keeps ticking on older, senior Catholics.  It ticks for all of us, but some are closer to the end than others.  When they go, their material support of the Church goes with them.    But “trad” families are large and committed.

[…]

Paix Liturgique: And that, then, is why you are so pleased with this Roman survey among all the bishops of the world.

Christian Marquant: At the beginning of this interview I spoke of those Italian bishops who are hostile to the expansion of the traditional liturgy. Now, the results of this survey are supposed to be handled at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith by the personnel in charge of the traditional liturgy. Yet the Italian bishops, who keenly spotted the inherent danger of this survey, have arbitrarily modified the procedure outlined by Rome: the Conference of Italian Bishops has instructed the bishops of Italy to send their answers not back to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, but straight to the Conference of Bishops, which will then take it upon itself to collate them, summarize them, and send its summary to the Holy See. Without wishing to seem naïve (I am fully aware that those opposed to the traditional liturgy will do their utmost to thwart it), I see this as proof that they have been rattled by the truth. And this truth is the weight of the Summorum Pontificum world, which is a stand-in for the discontent of a considerable proportion of Catholics worldwide.

Paix Liturgique: So you believe that the current situation bothers them?

Christian Marquant:  I do believe so, and I’ll give you a reason why: a few days ago our dear friend Marco Sgroi, the president of the Italian Coordination of Summorum Pontificum, was telling us that the number of places where the traditional liturgy is celebrated in Italy had increased from 129 to 134 within the space of the single year 2019. This represents an increase of five venues, or 4%, within 71 of the 222 dioceses of Italy. He also told us that requests for celebrations are more and more numerous in Italy (at least thirty verified requests where the traditional liturgy is not currently being celebrated), even though there as elsewhere the drumbeat had long been that “the traditional problem concerns only the French, in France” … Understandably, the Italian bishops are as worried today as the French bishops were yesterday.

[…]

This is the same Italian Bishops Conference whose daily news association just defended the child-porn promoting “Cuties”.

In France, more and more the life of the Church is being influenced by the TRADITIONAL form.  That will happen in Italy and everywhere else, too.

Bishops are frightened.  That means they will lash out.  They will continue to target priests who do traditional things.   For insecure bishops, every time they hear about Latin (which they don’t know) or see a TLM is being said or a – GASP! -an picnic table altar is being removed or Mass is going ad orientem – they lash out at the priests.

Bishops are frightened because they see the statistics.  Demographics are changing for priests too, not just lay people.  Younger priests are more and more open to Traditional.  That is scary.

The Church’s landscape is going to change massively.  Tectonically.  A few groups will remain strong in the Church, including Traditionalists (who are having lots of children, who are dedicated and generous with their money). There are also committed converts from a more Evangelical background. There are charismatics who have strong Eucharistic and Marian devotion.   Out of necessity these groups will find each other.  There will be friction, but something amazing will grow out of their contact and integration.  The TRADITIONAL LATIN  RITE, not the Novus Ordo, will being them together.

Thanks from Fr. Z and upcoming Mass for Benefactors

I will say Mass for the intention of my benefactors – I keep track of you – on Saturday, 19 September at Noon CDT (Deo volente).

While I remember benefactors at every Mass, living and deceased at the respective Memento in the Roman Canon, I regularly say Mass for the intention of my benefactors.  It is my duty, honor and pleasure to do so.

Some of you subscribe to give a monthly donation via PayPal or Continue to Give.  Some of send occasional donations through those means or sometimes via snail mail to me P.O. Box (address on the sidebar – do a CTR_F for “Struck” to find it fast.   Others send items from my wish list.

It is all greatly appreciated. When something comes in, it’s a real moral boost.

There are some lean days, however, for the monthly subscription option.  Today is one of them.  It’s a little disheartening.

Also, could I – please – remind you to use my link to enter Amazon when shopping online?  Links for these USA and the UK are on the sidebar.

And see what happens when you type that address into your browser.  It’s sort of a “back door” to search.

I cannot see what you purchase, but I get a small percentage of each purchase.  This is a major issue for me.  So, thanks in advance.

I’m also singing for my supper by posting #ASonnetADay.

So, please consider subscribing to send a monthly donation. That way I have steady income I can plan on, and you wind up regularly on my list of benefactors for whom I pray and for whom I periodically say Holy Mass. I even added “Sonnet Lover” option.

Since “Black Lives Matter”, nota bene! New pro-life film released today: Divided Hearts of America

A new pro-life film was released today. Divided Hearts of America.

The movie is about “Super Bowl champion Benjamin Watson’s journey to discover the truth about abortion in America”.

Election Day is coming up FAST. This film addresses the topics of both abortion and race. We have to change hearts when it come to abortion, especially in the Black community which for decades has been targeted by Big Business Abortion for the sake of profit. If “Black Lives Matter”, Big Business Abortion (such as Planned Parenthood) and politicians and others who promote and defend abortion are the primary abusers of – predators on – the Black community.

The film is distributed through Salem Media group.

The Ass. of Catholic Priests vape against AG Bill Barr

It seems that the Ass. of Catholic Priests rips one against AG. Bill Barr who will speak at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast.  HERE

Their dismay makes me want to attend the Breakfast.

The Association of U.S. Catholic Priests (AUSCP) has blasted the “scandalous” decision to honor U.S. Attorney General William Barr at the annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast.

“The recent decision of the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast (NCPB) to confer its Christifideles Laici award on Attorney General Barr at their September Breakfast is for us shocking, incomprehensible, and scandalous,” states the AUSCP, which supports Black Lives Matter and crusades against the “climate crisis.”

“Specifically, we consider Mr. Barr’s recent decisions and actions to be abhorrent in the context of Catholic faith,” the statement continues. “We consider especially scandalous his decision to begin again federal executions after 17 years of moratorium. Executions are clearly not pro-life.”

The mission of AUSCP involves “raising a prophetic voice” and undertaking “prophetic action,” according to the group’s website.

[…]

“shocking, incomprehensible, and scandalous”

The lady dost protest.

The old lady protests.

As a wise bishop – recently retired – told me many years ago, and this has been proven true again and again:  Remember John, and never forget… there are old women of both sexes.”

Ladies and gents… the ASS of Catholic Priests.

[I’m tempted to file this under “Women Religious”]

September Ember Days 2020 – confusion about the true dates

From a reader….

QUAERITUR:

I’ve seen two sets of dates for the Ember Days this September.  I thought they were supposed to be in the week after Exaltation of the Cross?  So I say a tweet from Taylor Marshall who wishes that Fr. Cekeda was still alive so that he could explain it.  I’ll bet you can.

Yes.

Here is his tweet.

Sometime these whippersnappers forget that there are still a few old priests around who know what is going on.     o{];¬)

BTW… the Fr. Cekeda he mentioned was a Sedevacantist priest who died recently.  He wrote quite a bit about the liturgical changes perpetrated by and in the name of the Council.  The book he wrote about Novus Ordo had just about the best title ever devised for a book about the Novus Ordo: Work Of Human Hands.  May God be merciful to him. R.I.P.

Ad ramos.

Four times a year, roughly in keeping with the changing of seasons, we observe three penitential days, the Ember Days, a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.  I’ve written many times about the origin of “Ember” and what they are all about.  This post is offered simply to clarify when the September Ember Days fall.

The old rhyme is

Fasting days and Emberings be
Lent, Whitsun, Holyrood, and Lucie.

A short version: Lenty, Penty, Crucy, Lucy.

So, the autumn Ember Days should – traditionally – fall after Holyrood, which is the Holy Cross, or Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, which is fixed on 14 September.   However, 14 September slides around among the days of the week depending on the year.

In some places you might be seeing that today, 16 September, was Ember Wednesday.  Thus, 18 Friday and 19 Saturday would follow.  These are the first available Wednesday, Friday and Saturday after Exaltation of the Cross, right?  Ember Days, right?

Right!

But, as it turns out, it is more complicated than that.

Traditionally, that’s right.

Since time immemorial, certain books of Scripture were read from August through November.  The change in the books to be read fell on the 1st Sunday of the month.  However, the 1st Sunday of a month was considered the Sunday closest to the 1st day of the month, not necessarily the first Sunday within the month.  Hence, it was possible for the 1st Sunday of August to still be in July, the 1st of September to be in August, etc.

Here is a shot from the great site Divinum Officium with the rubrics set for pre-1955.

Notice that, this year, 30 August, the 13th Sunday after Pentecost, is the 1st Sunday of September!

So, the Ember Days in the pre-1955 calculation are just after the Exaltation of the Cross on a Monday, hence 16, 18 and 19.

Then, in 1960, John XXIII changed things around (yeah, big surprise, right?).  Henceforth, the 1st Sunday of the month was the actual 1st Sunday of the month, rather than the Sunday closest to the 1st day of the month.  In this screenshot of the calendar with the 1960 rubrics, you can see that the 1st Sunday of September is on 6 September, rather than pre-55 30 August.

John XXIII fixed the Ember Days of September to follow the 3rd Sunday of September, now fixed as the actual 3rd Sunday. See?

Hence, this year, 2020, in the 1960 rubrics  the 3rd Sunday of September is on the 20th, the 16th Sunday after Pentecost.  Hence, this year the Ember Days are on Wednesday 23, Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September.

According to Summorum Pontificum we use the calendar in force in 1962.

Yes, permissions have been given – quite rightly – to use the pre-55 Holy Week.   But that wouldn’t extend to the use of the pre-55 calendar for the Breviary and the Mass for the rest of the year.   Some will say that we should be flexible and that the Church can support a lot of variety.

Anyway… that’s what’s going on with the date of the Ember Days in 2020.

ANOTHER priest with an invalid baptism. Fathers! Review the videos of your baptism! ACTION ITEM!

You old-timers here known that for years… going on decades now… I have RAILED against priests who take it on themselves to change the words of the sacred liturgy, especially in significant moments such as during the FORM of sacraments.

There have been priests… and bishops… yes yes deacons, too… who have changed the words of the FORM of the Sacrament of Baptism. Some changes make the baptism INVALID.

INVALID.

Recently, after a declaration from the CDF about the invalidity of the form for baptism, “WE baptize you…”, instead of “I baptize you…”, a young priest in Detroit reviewed a video of his baptism and found that he wasn’t validly baptized. That meant that he had not received any of the other subsequent sacraments validly, including ORDINATION. That meant that his Masses were not Masses, etc. Think about how these things are all connected. The priest had to be ordained… absolutely, not conditionally. I am sure that steps have been taken to take care of all the Mass intentions, marriages, etc. etc. etc.

This, because some jackass priest took it on himself many years ago to change the words of the form of Baptism. Maybe he was well-meaning. Maybe he was so poorly formed that he barely grasped what the Church understands. Seminaries were really really really bad for a long time. However, the BOOK has the words in BLACK and even poorly formed priests know that the BLACK part is what the Church approves… you know, the old “institutional” Church not the “spirit-filled” prophetic Church, for whom BLACK is a suggestion.

Now we learn that the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City say another young priest, theoretically baptized in 1992, was made wet by the pouring of water and the invalid form: “We baptize…”, instead of “I baptize…”.

That means another scramble. More anxiety.

Today a priest wrote to me:

What is going on?! As a fellow newly ordained priest, I am scared
about not only mine, but many others out there.

Fathers… if you can, if you have videos from your baptism, review the videos… if you haven’t already.

Newspaper of the Italian Bishops Conference – Avvenire – defends “Cuties”

The Italian Bishops Conference has a daily national newspaper: Avvenire.

Avvenire – the Italian Bishops Conference paper – has come out in defense of Netflix kiddie-porn – child-sex – pedophile fantasy movie “Cuties”.

I am not making this up.

Non si spiega la campagna contro Netflix: non c’è alcuna «scandalosa sessualizzazione di adolescenti» come hanno scritto alcuni tra i 600mila firmatari di una petizione

There’s no explaining the campaign against Netflix: there is no “scandalous sexualization of adolescents” as some among the 600,ooo signers of a petition have written

There’s no sexualization of adolescents.   Perhaps they are too young to be adolescents.

This is what liberal obsession about understanding “nuanceproduces: dung for brains.

Libs always… always… demand that you deny the facts right in front of your eyes.

The Italian Bishops’ newspaper defends “Cuties”.

What does that tell you?

CQ CQ CQ: #HamRadio – International Space Station UPGRADED

Although I am a NASA certified Space Shuttle Door Gunner and a certified expert on the Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser, I have not yet had a contact with the International Space Station.  Contact, that is, via radio.

I received a Just Too Cool story from a reader.

Via K0LWC comes this:

New Ham Radio Onboard The ISS Is On The Air

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) team has announced the new ham radio FM repeater is now active aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as of September 2, 2020 at 1:02 GMT.

Ham Radio operators have enjoyed making contact with the ISS for many years. The holy grail has always been talking to ISS astronauts on FM simplex (145.800) — but those can be rare chance encounters. Ham radio operators have also enjoyed slow-scan television (SSTV) broadcasts and APRS packet radio via the ISS digipeater. Now we get to work the world’s most expensive FM repeater thanks to the new InterOperable Radio System (IORS) installed on the ISS.

The InterOperable Radio System (IORS) replaces an ancient Ericsson radio system and packet module that were certified for spaceflight over two decades ago. The 5 watt HT that was aboard the ISS was getting worn out after many years of use. The Ericsson radio looks like something from a 1990s episode of Cops.

5-watt Ericcson radio aboard the International Space Station that has now been replaced by the new InterOperable Radio System (IORS) radio system.

The new IORS was launched from Kennedy Space Center on March 6, 2020 onboard the SpaceX CRS-20 resupply mission. It consists of a custom space-modified Kenwood D710GA transceiver and an ARISS-developed multi-voltage power supply. The equipment was installed by NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy (KF5KDR).

New Kenwood D710G ‘Space Flight Edition’

The radio now being used is a Kenwood D710G and was engineered specifically for space flight. JVCKENWOOD USA and the ARISS worked closely to modify the D710G. The upgrades were performed by JVCKENWOOD and include:

  • Output power is hardware limited to 25 watts for the safety of the International Space Station
  • Custom firmware and menus tailored for operation onboard the ISS.
  • Higher output/high-reliability fan to allow continuous repeater operation.

Continuous fan operation is an important feature in space for the reliability of the radio. There is no convection in microgravity, so all heat-generating components need to be cooled by moving air or conduction. If the radio burns up, there isn’t a Ham Radio Outlet down the street to grab parts.

[…]

He goes on to describe the antennas… because it is always all about the antennas.

The ISS features four different vertical antennas on the spacecraft. The reason for four antennas is redundancy in case of an antenna failure. They are made of flexible metal tape that are coated in Kapton, a polyimide film that can withstand extreme temperatures. The antennas are designed to withstand kick loads of 125 lbs.

Three of the four antennas are identical and measure 0.5-meter (1.5 foot) in length and each can support both transmit and receive operations on 2 meters, 70 cm, L-band, and S-band. The fourth antenna has a 2.5-meter (8 foot) long vertical whip that can be used to support High Frequency (HF) operations, particularly on 10 meters. However, no HF radio is currently aboard the space station.

[…]

It ain’t ZEDNET but it is pretty cool anyway.
