QUAERITUR: Your SIGN SLOGANS for 23 March nationwide Religious Liberty Rallies

On Friday 23 March at 12 Noon there will be “Stand Up for Religious Liberty” rallies all over the USA.

For rally locations click HERE.

From a reader:

I am planning on taking my children to the rally for religious liberty tomorrow, in San Diego, along with many other families in our homeschooling group. I hope many of your readers plan on attending, in their cities. My daughter is preparing for confirmation at Pentecost and I feel this is a great way for her to participate in professing her Faith courageously and publicly. Might you or your readers have suggestions for pithy quotes we could put on our signs? I’m sure the media will completely ignore the event or focus on the few counter-protesters, but we would sure like to represent our side in a thoughtful, classy way. Any help would be appreciated.

Okay you bright and classy readers…. put on your cogitation chapeaus … chapeaux!

I am reminded of the brilliant sign one classy protester had during Pope Benedict’s state visit to England.  I chuckle even now.

58 Responses to QUAERITUR: Your SIGN SLOGANS for 23 March nationwide Religious Liberty Rallies

  1. Rich says:

    “SEPARATION OF STATE AND CHURCH”

    [Separation of Obama from Office]

  2. Marion Ancilla Mariae says:

“Private” “Personal” Choices Should Not Be Funded By Public Health-Care Money.

  3. Facta Non Verba says:

I plan to carry a Gadsden flag, the one with the coiled rattlesnake that says: DON’T TREAD ON ME. I also considered making a sign that says: “St. Michael, defend us in battle!”

  4. chantgirl says:

I was thinking of something along the lines of “I refuse to bow to the Almighty O” as that would imply that we are making a God of sex and that Obama is trying to set himself up as a king. Perhaps that is not as classy as it could be, but I think that would go over the heads of any children in attendance, and still make a point.

  5. cblanch says:

“This is the Church trying to stay out of your bedroom.”

“It’s between a woman and her doctor…leave us out of it”

  6. Tom Esteban says:

Scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds!

  7. Bea says:

Ideas from St Thomas More’s quote
“When men forsake their own conscience for the sake of public duties, they lead their nation down a short road to chaos.”

    Could be shortened to:
“Forsaking your conscience, leads the country to chaos.”

“Keep your mandates off of my conscience”

“Government should not mandate a conscience”

“My conscience belongs to God, not to the government”

  8. Bea says:

    More thoughts

    “A nation without a conscience
    becomes a barbaric nation”
    …….Repeal the anti-conscience Mandate……

“Don’t steal my $$ to pay for fornication”
    ..Repeal the anti-conscience mandate

“Destroy the soul of a nation and you destroy the nation”
HHS Conscience Mandate will do just that

Only God has the power to Mandate
    Government must heed the people

  9. HyacinthClare says:

    God before government

  10. MaryW says:

From a commenter over at the Creative Minority Report blog: “Your pill, your bill”! Short, but to the point.

  11. Legisperitus says:

Surely, “chapeaux.” ;) [In English it goes either way, I suppose. But the X is cooler. It wins. I'll change the top entry.]

  12. Singing Mum says:

My son Tad wanted to make a sign for the protest tomorrow. He’s learning Latin and his idea was ‘Obama- sumus libero!’. Love it!
Latinists- did he correctly convey, ‘we are free’?
We are also from San Diego- nice to see you posted this, Father Z!

  13. Iowander says:

Seen somewhere else: “Keep your ovaries off my rosaries”

  14. Centristian says:

    Mine will be simple: “ROMNEY”

  15. TMKent says:

The organizers are asking that the signs not be directed at a party or candidate.

  16. wmeyer says:

    “[Separation of Obama from Office]”

    Amen, Father!

It is a measure of the depth of our malaise, however, that it will take an election to do what should long since have inspired the House to impeach.

  17. pyrosapien says:

I will be attending the march in the People’s Republic of Seattle.

Here are a couple of ideas for signs/slogans

“It’s the economy 1st Amendment, Stupid!”
Don’t wrap religious freedom with a condom!
wrap the Bill of Rights in the flag, not a condom!
Keep “The Pill” away from “The Bill”!
What’s next! Mandating that Christians can’t own a business?
Don’t Abort The Bill of Rights!
    Obama Lied, Religious Freedom Died!

  18. acardnal says:

“A wise man’s heart inclines him toward the right, but a fool’s heart toward the left.”
    –Ecclesiastes 10:2

  19. Singing Mum says:

TMKent- noted, thanks! We will amend the sign.

  20. Scarltherr says:

Here are the one’s I’m using in Omaha:

God gives rights, Obama is wrong.
    We will not comply.
“Congress shall make no law regarding the establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”
God said, “Go forth and multiply.” Obama says “Divide and Conquer.”
    For the Kids:
Jesus loves me this I know. Obama wants to make me go.
I am not a preventable disease!

  21. digdigby says:

Being a Jewish convert, I like Deuteronomy:

“I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse–therefore choose life!”

  22. Centristian says:

“The organizers are asking that the signs not be directed at a party or candidate.”

Okay, then I’ll go with my original choice which was:

    Hang in
    Hell,
    Sibelius.

It’s obnoxious, yet nasty. Also, why should the President get all the credit all the time for being the big failure on Pennsylvania Avenue? There are others helping him. This sign is inclusive and avoids sexism.

  23. Gregg the Obscure says:

Probably too wordy, but “Congress shall enact no law restricting the free exercise of religion”
or maybe “Freedom of religion is the first freedom”

I’m praying that my morning work commtment ends in time for me to get to the rally in Denver.

  24. Singing Mum says:

    Ooooh, Gregg. Good ones. Basic.
We might use “We will defend our 1st Amendment Rights!” with lots of hearts and cute kids holding it. Killing them with kidness… I meant kindness. Either works.

  25. Agnes says:

    “Paying for our own Condom-Nation.”

I also liked “Your Pill. Your Bill.”

  26. poohbear says:

Keep your bedroom out of my wallet.

  27. Marion Ancilla Mariae says:

A bit off-topic, but I hope a worthwhile request. (I like all of these slogans very much)

Even if there should be significant turn-outs in several of our cities, I don’t expect the news media will give our rallies much coverage. They’ll give some coverage, but the details will be played way down (“a handful of protesters were present” instead of “about 150″ or “150,000) and any story about us will be buried under a half-ton of news-fluff, you know, right after breaking news about Valerie Berntinelli’s diet and Rosie O’Donnell’s newly redecorated patio.

I hope very much that participants in the various cities who have access to good camera equipment will consider taking the time and trouble to “be our own news journalists.” Get some good photos of people holding up the signs that place them unmistakably at one of our rallies. Get some long-shots or wide-shots of crowds, if you can. And post your experiences and the photos on the web. And I hope some of you will include with your photos and stories the words, “We’re covering the news that the mainstream news journalists would rather no one knows about.”

  28. Tina in Ashburn says:

There better things to buy with other people’s money

  29. Gwen says:

I am organizing our rally. We have made up signs with a graphic of Lady Liberty and “Don’t tread on my religious liberty.”

I made one for our rector (who will speak): “No, you can’t have my religious liberties–I’m still using them.”. His creation.

  30. Laura98 says:

I was hoping to go to our local rally tomorrow… but the 101F temp and coughing won’t let me. :( I will pray for all of you attending and for the success of all the rallies! Also for fair and balanced news coverage…

  31. Jim of Bowie says:

    Stop the Kulturkampf

  32. Jenice says:

Singing Mum: The Latin for “We are free” should be “Sumus liberi.”

  33. Singing Mum says:

    Jenice- of course! Thank you.

  34. awlms says:

A Photo of Statue of Liberty with a “for sale by owner” sign hanging from neck.
    Call: 1-800-OBAMA
    Cheap!
FOR FREE!…. if you recycle quickly!… before Tea party finds out!!

  35. Elizabeth D says:

    “Memo to Nebuchadnezzar:
    MENE, TEKEL, PERES”

  36. Elizabeth D says:

    Sorry, it’s Belshazzar not Nebuchadnezzar!

  37. Kerry says:

My wife designed and made a sign, “IHS not HHS”. (But to see it, go to my blog, smoothingplane.blogspot.com). I will be carrying a 17×24 “Jesus, I trust in you” with the ‘IOXYS’ and ‘MOLON LABE’, and “We will not comply!” written on the back.

  38. HyacinthClare says:

Wmeyer, show up in Phoenix and I’ll hand you an “Impeach Now!” sign…

  39. wmeyer says:

HyacinthClare: Too far to go; I’m in Atlanta. But thanks for the offer!

  40. The Sicilian Woman says:

How about, “I’ll pay for your lifestyle if you pay for mine,” or “I’ll buy your Pills, you buy my McMansion,” or something like that.

I thought I’d read on the web site that signs will be provided?

Unfortunately, our actions will be held up to a scrutiny that those on the Left rarely are subjected to, so, no matter how nasty the opposition might be tomorrow, we will need to stick to the guidelines that the organizers have planned.

  41. Centristian says:

“Why should I pay for your man date?”

  42. Kerry says:

Oh, and anyone who wishes may copy the “IHS” sign.

  43. DFWShook says:

    “Obama Mandates Religous Bigotry”
“Land of the Free, except for Catholics”
“Catholics to the Back of the Bus”
    “Obama Mandates Anit-Catholic Bigotry”
“The First Amendment Applies to Catholics too”
    “Obama’s Mandate Violates My Rights”

  44. One of those TNCs says:

HHS Contraception Mandate: “I play, you pay.”

  45. Melody Faith says:

” A Bitter Pill : The Group I Carcinogen is The REAL War on Women”

    “Pro-life, Pro-liberty, Pro-conscience”

  46. DFWShook says:

Stop the War on Women Catholics

  47. DFWShook says:

Stop the War on Women Freedom of Religion

  48. DFWShook says:

Our Forefathers fought for Freedom, not free contraceptives.

  49. DFWShook says:

Keep your Uterus out of my Faith!

  50. DFWShook says:

My First Amendment Rights are not a Fluke

  51. DFWShook says:

“The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.” JFK

  52. Mrs. O says:

237 years ago, on none other than March 23rd, Patrick Henry gave his speech that got titled “Give me Liberty, or give me Death!”

  53. PhilipNeri says:

I want to urge rally participants NOT to bring partisan signs, esp. Tea Party related signs. If the media doesn’t ignore us entirely, they will paint the rally as the Tea Party at Prayer. Let’s not give them any photo-ops to make their point.

Please, keep your signs on point: freedom of religion and how the HHS mandate violates religious conscience.

God bless, Fr. Philip Neri, OP

  54. boko fittleworth says:

I just finished making my signs:

KEEP YOUR OVARIES OFF MY WALLET!

KEEP CATHOLICISM LEGAL (circle with the pro-abort font)

YES WE CAN. 915! GIVE IT A WUERL, CARDINAL!

  55. Random Friar says:

Going from the Cathedral to the protest tomorrow (after Confessions – maybe a half mile away). Good day ahead!

  56. bsjy says:

Freedom = Submission to the Truth
Slavery = Oppression by the Government
    We choose Freedom!

  57. irishgirl says:

The closest rally is south of where I live in Upstate NY, but I won’t be able to attend it.
Won’t have enough gas to make it there and back, and I have a busted rear passenger window on my car (‘courtesy’ of some lowlife who smashed it two weeks ago outside the TLM chapel), so it’s only got a plastic shield with not-quite-so-sticky duct tape on it. If I leave it in a strange parking lot, someone else might get another idea and try to ransack the car again…or even steal it! (luckily I got the two bags which were stolen the first time, thanks to an eagle-eyed cop named Michael and footprints in the snow)
But I digress…..I do love all the creative sign suggestions, though…..
I especially like the one in the entry here with the Boston terrier, ‘Democracy gone to the dogs’.
Thinking of that, maybe my sign would have said, ‘Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas’.

  58. AnAmericanMother says:

Rally here was fairly well attended, considering that it is gloomy and spitting rain on and off, with thunderstorms due to roll in any time now. I would say a couple of hundred folks on hand – filled up the plaza on the north side of the Capitol and spilled out into Washington Ave. Our Auxiliary Bishop spoke and there were several other speakers. Enthusiastic but extremely well behaved crowd, lots of young parents and little children, generous sprinkling of priests and deacons throughout.
