My favorite depiction is the original in the Gesu by Pompeo Batoni, 1740. This same painting is in the Church of the Circumcision in Valletta, and in a window at the home of Newman at the Maryvale Institute. “The site of Maryvale has been in Catholic occupation since the Middle Ages. Formerly ‘Oscott House’, it came to the Church in 1702 at the bequest of Father Andrew Bromwich who had inherited this property from his family. From 1794 to 1838 it was the home of Oscott College, the first Seminary to open in England after the reformation. During this time the historic Chapel of the Sacred Heart was inaugurated”. That quotation in on the Maryvale website. I have seen the small glass Sacred Heart there, and it was carried on horseback all the way from Rome to Maryvale by, I think, the rector at the time. It was very moving for me to have seen Batoni’s depiction in Rome, in Valletta, and at Maryvale.

In addition, Oscott College has a dedication to the Sacred Heart. http://oscottcollege.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/solemnity-of-the-dedication-of-the-college-chapel/

PS just to add to my Sacred Heart connections, the Basilica at Notre Dame, my alma mater, is dedicated to the Sacred Heart, and my hometown cathedral, Sacred Heart, was the first Cathedral in the United States dedicated to that devotion. I was also married at the Brompton Oratory (dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary) which has a great chapel to the Sacred Heart. In addition, I am studying, again Newman. Cor ad cor loquitur

Yes, Father. Jesus gave put it in my poor heart, so I carry it with joy!

Please all, pray for Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery in Silver City, New Mexico. It is in the path of the massive New Mexico fire which is just 31 miles away tonight! Please pray for rain and safety of the Benedictine Monastery.

Please go to SSPX-USA to read the plea of the monks….the third story

Went to Mass at Holy Innocents, NYC tonight. Father was in the red vestments for the octave of Pentacost and said the Mass of Ember Friday after Pentacost. I couldn’t do the all night vigil tonight, but it looked like more than a couple of people were staying. It is my dream to be able someday to afford an apartment in on of the nearby high rises, so that I could go to all night vigil from my home easily….
I digress. The music was beautiful. The preaching superlative, and Dominus Nostrus was there…. They sang the Pentecostal sequence…… I am SO GRATEFUL. My husband, a NYC public HS teacher says that he is convinced that “all my praying” attracts Holy Angels to his classroom and keeps the sweet and tender hooligans mellower than they might otherwise be….

We are also in the path of that fire. Smoke was very bad in Reserve this am. Pray also for the young fire fighters who battle this terrible fire. As a nurse, I am very worried abut the damage to their lungs and tell them so when we see them in town at breakfast and dinner time.
Our family is consecrated to the Sacred Heart. All 3 parishes that we have belonged to, were dedicated to the Sacred Heart. In Silverton CO, and Golden, CO are huge statues such as the one in Rio. Our church in Ca also had one like that but smaller. And we were married in Sacred Heart Church….

  7. TZ says:

Texas Trad, I will indeed pray for your intention. I’m sorry to hear this, and hope that rain will come to stop the destruction.

  8. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.

I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist Thee. Imprint Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee.

I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Goodness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of Thy devoted servants.

    Amen.
    – St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

Might be a good month to make a solemn consecrate to the Sacred Heart of Jesus :) St. Margaret, pray for us and for the intention of the monks of the SSPX. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us and for the intention of the monks of the SSPX. Holy Ghost, Living Flame of Love, have mercy on us and intercede for us with the Father. My Jesus, mercy, and intercede for us with the Father!

    JonathanCatholic, thank you

    Thank you JonathanCatholic:

The monks of Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery in Silver City, New Mexico were told yesterday by the U.S. Forestry, that they did not renew their contract on slurry bombers for firefighting. The fire is going to be allowed it burn. The monks are on their own at this point. It is heartbreaking. One of the brothers said they are going to try to fight it on their own, but rain is all that can stop the fire. Please all, keep praying for rain for the monastery. Please go to their website.

  11. irishgirl says:

Texas trad-Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about the fire in New Mexico that is threatening the SSPX Benedictine monastery.
We’ve got a rainy day here in the Northeast; I sure wish it could be in the Southwest, where it’s more needed! We’ve had more than our share of wet weather!
May Our Lord, through the prayers of Our Lady of Guadalupe, send rain to fight the fire!

On the subject of the Sacred Heart, my family and I just watched a very inspiring film last night called “The War of the Vendee” (Novis Pictures), a true story about the Catholic Resistance in a region of France called the Vendee during the French Revolution. All those engaged in the resistance wore Rosaries and emblems of the Sacred Heart, which the women had sewn for them. The actors in this film were all young people. Very inspiring, full of Faith and Courage and Morality – just what the Sacred Heart should inspire in us, and just what we need now with the erosion of religious freedoms in our day, and the attacks on the Pope and on the Church. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

  13. lmo1968 says:

I watched a movie last night too! I saw For Greater Glory which just opened yesterday, a very well-made, faith filled and action packed film. It tells the stories of Mexican saints and their role in the government’s war on the Catholic Church in the 1920s. These guys were declared “Blessed” by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. The icon of the Sacred Heart of Jesus figured prominently in the movie.

  14. JKnott says:

St. Margaret Mary was a Visitandine. The Sisters of the Visitation in Tyringham give talks on the Sacred Heart on certain Sundays before Benediction at the monastery. The sister assigned to give it, first reads it in the refectory at dinner and then presents it again to visitors in their guest reception room.

    Re reply of lmo1968

I saw For Greater Glory yesterday. It was an incredibly moving movie about the True Story of the Cristero War. It was especially inspiring to see them carry the banner with the Sacred Heart of Jesus when they went to battle. The saddest part of the movie (and there is much that will movie many to tears) is that so few people will actually see this film which has received little advertising. Had I not seen an article at Catholic News Agency web site I might not even know it exists.

I highly encourage everyone to see it, more than once! Before it is out of theaters, as it has received a very limited release despite some big name actors like Peter O’Toole and Andy Garcia.

  16. Darren says:

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the principla devotion in my life (hence the Sacred Heart icon next to my name).

St. Claude de la Colombiere (a Jesuit priest when the Society of Jesus was still true to its foundation) was St. Margaret Mary’s first spiritual director and the first to spread the devotion according to Our Lord’s revelations to her. Fr. John Croiset, SJ was her spiritual director after the death of St. Claude, and he wrote the book on the devotion, which St. Margaret Mary revealed that Our Lord gave His approval of… a book that will never need a single word changed, so perfectly aligned to His will.

This book is now published by TAN: https://tanbooks.benedictpress.com/index.php/page/shop:flypage/product_id/134/

I higly recommend this book to everyone. In this book it is indicated that Claude de la Colombiere, from heaven, now directs all actions to promote and spread this devotion on earth. It is sad that the Jesuits have gone so astray, as they are the order specially given the responsibility to spread this devotion.

I pray to St. Claude that this devotion, one devotion united with Devotion to the Eucharist, will start to grow in the world today!

Yes. I am dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus ever since He began stalking me. I would find his image popping up in the oddest places in my daily life. I started a first Friday novena on 6/1 on Mt. St. Francis with the Friars of the Immaculate in the Extraordinary Form.
