Another good pre-Synod resource in defense of the family

I know that it seems like a torrent of things pertaining to the theme of the Synod of Bishops is coming at you. It feels like that for me, too.

That said, here is another title for your consideration.

Bishop Jean Laffitte, Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family, has a new book to be released on 1 September. I knew him a little, way back when. He is dependable.

The Choice of the Family: A Call to Wholeness, Abundant Life, and Enduring Happiness

Choice of the Family Lafitte

There is an introduction by Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and a Preface by Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia.

And don’t forget…

The “sequel” to the Five Cardinals Book™ is coming.  HERE

The Eleven Cardinals Book™ is on its way.

Eleven Cardinals Speak On Marriage and the Family  UK link HERE

Eleven Cardinals Book

Edited by Winfried Aymans the Eleven Cardinals Book is slated for release on 25 September (in advance of the Synod on the Family).  For more on the Cardinals, HERE.  The publisher is – who else? – Ignatius Press!

This book has as its focus merciful pastoral ministry to those who are in challenging marriage situations.  It will address marriage preparation, evangelization and conversion, the situation of the divorced and civilly remarried.

Next… slated for release on 28 September (in advance of the Synod on the Family), also from Ignatius Press (who else?)…

Christ’s New Homeland – Africa: A contribution to the Synod on the Family

Bishop Laffitte was appointed by the Holy Father to be Prelate of the Order of Malta just this July 4th, although he yet remains Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Family. I’m not going to say anything else.

  2. Ms. M-S says:

I’ll try to be first in line for the Laffitte book on the family. Once people said that in a family the husband was the head of the household and the woman was the heart of the home. Since VAT II and the wholesale embrace of “expanded roles for women”, I’ve heard certain priests say that that resulted in heartless men and headless women. It seems to me that the result has often been headless households and heartless women. The title and subtitle of this book promise to help reinvent the wheel.

  3. lmgilbert says:

“There must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized (1 Cor 11:19). . . .” From the standpoint of the next pope—coming soon according to Pope Francis—all this hubbub around the synod is the best thing that could have happened. As you yourself say,”Bishop Jean Laffitte . . . .is dependable.” The next pope is going to have a very clear idea of who is dependable and who is not, who is a yes man and who is not, who is ready to put his career on the line in defense of the truth and who is not. So in my view all the hand-wringing is misplaced. Things are shaping up very nicely— as unlikely as it may appear at the moment. “The latter splendor of this house will be greater than the former, says the Lord of Hosts” (Haggai 2:9)

Not to detract from the whole article, Fr. Z, but I’m not so sure I trust anything written by Carl Anderson, who seems to be part of the problem, and I don’t want to support anything he’s touched. Perhaps the forward he wrote is all good, but, you know what they say, “One bad apple …”.

I’d definitely read the other books listed.

  5. DonL says:

Gosh, todays readings about John the Baptist being beheaded because he didn’t exactly welcome adulterers, (pastoral care aside) adds a whole different light to the present day issues of welcoming adulterers to God’s Eucharist as per the German bishops and their soul mates at the synod.

  6. IoannesPetrus says:

So—especially as DonL brings up the significance of the date—pray for Card. Arinze as he celebrates his golden jubilee of episcopal ordination.

  7. acardnal says:

The pre-synod seminars and conferences occurring in Rome this year and organized by the Pontifical Council for the Family are cause for concern.

Catholic News Agency has a report HERE Bishop Lafitte attended the seminars but did not speak according to the article.

  8. acardnal says:

The diocesan newspaper here has been printing a series of articles by Fr Mark Pilon, STD who addresses a very serious omission in the 2015 synod’s predatory questionnaire – contraception. I commend the article to the readers’ attention.

    HERE

One of the commentators to his article was Dr. Rick Fitzgibbons, a psychiatrist, who links to an article he wrote wherein he describes contraception as follows:

” a clear and scientifically irrefutable relationship exists between the use of contraceptives, the epidemic of narcissism and the plague of divorce, with its life-long damage to millions upon millions of children, young adults, loyal spouses, and their families worldwide. Many days in my work as a psychiatrist over the past 40 years, I have felt like an army medic on a battlefield strewn with people of various ages and conditions, severely wounded by something essentially ignored.

The failure to address the psychological and sociological science related to this damage to Catholic marriage and familes needs to be corrected – and the subject directly confronted – in October’s Ordinary Synod on the Family.”

Please read his article, too, which he links to.

  9. acardnal says:

    “Predatory” should read prepatory above.
Could have been a Freudian slip but I blame it the application’s word predictive function. ;-)

  10. acardnal says:

    . . .or “preparatory”

  11. juergensen says:

It is a disgrace that after 2,000 years of unambiguous teaching on the Sacraments of Marriage and the Eucharist, the Church is even holding this synod.

  12. Grateful to be Catholic says:

Patience, acardnal. Your app will get it right eventually.

  13. Grateful to be Catholic says:

What I really meant to say, acardnal, before the app interrupted, was thanks for the tip to Fr. Pilon’s article. It is indeed excellent and nails what has been going on for the past 50 years and most especially the strategy in last year’s Synod and in the preparation for October’s Synod: do not mention artificial contraception or its consequences; airbrush out of history the clear and insistent teaching of the popes since Pius XI.

  14. acardnal says:

Grateful to be Catholic, know problem. I mean NO problem. LOL.

I thought the article nailed it, too! He speaks of modernism, The Rhine Flows into the Tiber, historical magisterial teachings and so on.
