GOOD NEWS! 5th Bishop of Madison appointed!

I am pleased to read that, today, His Excellency Most Reverend Donald Joseph Hying will be translated from Gary to Madison.  His appointment was announced today.

This is good news and the answer to many prayers.  I sense that the late, great Extraordinary Ordinary interceded.

Let there be sung Non Nobis and Te Deum.

Assuming then that he is a friend of tradition?

  2. Pius Admirabilis says:

Oremus pro pontifice Donald Joseph. Stet et pascat in fortitudine tua, Domine, in sublimitate nominis tui.

    Fr Zuhlsdorf,

Wikipedia must be wrong. [Imagine that.]

I don’t know the new ordinary at all, but by the sound of your effusive praise for him, we shouldn’t be worried, even though he was ordained by Apb Weakland and made seminary rector by Abp Dolan?

[I am in a good mood today, so I will not write what I might have yesterday. Suffice to say that one of the best priests I know was ordained a deacon by Gumbleton and a priest by Jadot. Do you have some notion of ecclesiastical cooties? Allow me to advise you to leave off with the RELENTLESS pessimism that so many on the traditional side embrace. At least around here.]

Came here to find out if Father Z was satisfied with this appointment. So relieved for the faithful in the Archdiocese of Madison. God bless.

  5. SanSan says:

Praying that the new Archbishop will continue where Ab Morlina left off……

In August 2018, Morlino released a pastoral letter saying the “homosexual subculture” within the Church was “wreaking great devastation.” He also called for additional Masses of reparation and fasting, and promised to respond firmly to any allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy or seminarians.

Gary Indiana has vastly improved during BP Hying’s tenure: haunted houses exorcised, new Gary baseball team in the Railcats, and fewer clubs of ill repute. He himself teaches on our local radio on the Scriptures. I have enjoyed him immensely and wish him well in WI.

Bishop Hying spoke at our Men’s conference this year. I liked his presentation. A link is below from our catholic radio station here in Columbus.

Living in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee where I knew Bishop Hying and having had the honor to be acquainted with Bishop Morlino and friends of several priests of the Diocese of Madison, I can say that I am pleased with this appointment. Bishop Hying was a beloved pastor, an orthodox rector, and a supportive auxiliary bishop. He had a reputation for holiness and traditional piety while in Milwaukee. At worst, he may treat traditional liturgy with benign neglect, but it is more likely that he will support it, even if he may need some help in doing that. Patience with Bishop Hying along with gentle encouragement will go a long way. The man is a Catholic and a true priest.

  9. Diana says:

Praise be to God!! What a wonderful Easter gift. He is good.

  10. hwriggles4 says:

I recall that Bishop Hying was a big help in restructuring a few things at St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee after 2002. His efforts (I heard) were worthwhile pursuits. He is fairly young (he’s about 58) for a bishop.

Where I live (Texas) I hope my newer bishop stays here a while. He’s fairly young (about 61) and he seems to really want to be a shepherd.

  11. I’m glad Madison is getting a good shepherd.

A question occurs to me about how bishops are appointed. It seems to me that every time a see falls vacant, a new bishop is always translated from another diocese, which now will need a new bishop of its own. Why don’t they ever choose a priest from within the diocese and consecrate him as the new bishop? (I’m not saying that’s how they should do it; I’m just wondering why they don’t do it that way.)

  12. tigger says:

I am hopeful, because that is always the best option to keep my interior peace. https://faithfulshepherds.com has him solidly pro-life, but without any strong *submitted* evidence on other issues. I will keep watching and hope and pray that Tradition continues to thrive!

  13. MissBee says:

Glad to hear good news :) Some years ago I subscribed to the Diocese of Gary’s email list, not sure what prompted it, but must have been something good!

    Deo gratias!

I recall that Bishop Hying was a big help in restructuring some things at St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee after 2002. His efforts (I heard) were worthwhile pursuits. At 58 years old, he is still a fairly young bishop.

Where I live (Texas) I hope my newer bishop gets to stay here a while. He’s about 61, and seems to be a visible shepherd who loves the Church.

  15. Jerome Charles says:

From all I’ve read, and hearing him address the press conference today, Bishop Hying seems to be very pastoral, humble, intelligent, Gospel-centered, and a strong servant leader. I feel like Madison has been blessed today!

  16. Anon Seminarian says:

    @Anita Moore, O.P.(lay)

One reason why bishops are often not chosen from their own dioceses is that “no prophet is welcome in their native place.” An ordinary who is well known among the presbyterate, some priests perhaps knowing the bishops before the bishop was even in seminary, can cause the priests not to have as much respect for the bishop. Or so I’ve heard.

  17. Chris Garton-Zavesky says:

I am very pleased to be told there is no cause for alarm by someone whose judgment is reliable in other matters, such as the idea that we need to have good liturgy done well.

I know the relentless pessimism of which you speak. I didn’t mean to practice it in this case. I shall leave off even the appearance of relentless pessimism.

  18. UncleBlobb says:

    Dear Father Z.,

I sincerely congratulate you and the Dioceses of Madison on your new bishop! Good for you!

Please say a prayer that good things may happen – and maybe likely something would happen soon? – for us also in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.

    God bless you.

  19. JamesA says:

    Deo gratias !!!
So happy for you and the whole Diocese of Madison. Apparently Rome can still do some things right.

  20. Josephus Corvus says:

I was looking at another site where they were asking whether or not Bishop Hying was good for Madison. The general response was that since Father Z is happy all is good!

  21. Pius Admirabilis says:

    @lsclerkin

Thank you for sharing this link!

  22. Bonaventurian says:

If Father Z is excited about this appointment, then that dispels any anxieties I may have had about a new Bishop. I’ll be praying that he follows in Bp. Morlino’s footsteps well.

  23. bourgja says:

He was such a good priest when I was a parishioner at Our Lady of Good Hope in Milwaukee some 15 years ago– glad to hear that he will be the Bishop of Madison!

  24. Charivari Rob says:

The appointment came fairly quickly. That’s nice – could have taken much longer.

  25. veritas vincit says:

No one translated Bishop Hying’s motto, so lacking Father Z’s Lewis & Short dictionary, I consulted Google Translate and got this:

    Love never fails

Congratulations to the Diocese of Madison on their new bishop.
