A response from the rector of Mount Angel Seminary about TLM training

I received the following, which in justice I am happy to post.  It is a response to my entry about TLM training for seminarians at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon.

My emphases.

Dear Fr. Zuhlsdorf,

I would very much appreciate your printing the following response to the "report" sent into your blog from a Mount Angel seminarian.

"Fr. Z" and blog readers of the "report" regarding Mount Angel Seminary: The content of the recent blog message was imprecise and misleading on several counts.  Mount Angel Seminary will offer for the seminarians Mass according to the extra-ordinary form when it can be done properly and prayerfully and when the students are prepared by a preceding conference.  Recently those seminarians who wished were able to attend the extraordinary form of the Roman rite in a parish nearby, so they are not deprived of the opportunity.

Fr. Paschal Cheline, OSB
Interim President-Rector
Mount Angel Seminary
St. Benedict, OR  97373 USA

Remember: Summorum Pontificum is part of our landscape now.  It cannot be avoided.  It must not be avoided, especially in the training of seminarians.

I look forward to the day when all Latin Rite seminaries train their students in both uses of the Roman Rite as a matter of course.

In any event, while it sounds like use of and training in the Extraordinary Use is not formally banned, it doesn’t sound like very much is being done there.

It seems to me that sound training for seminarians today, to present them as competent candidates for ordination, should include training in how to celebrate their proper Rite, depending on which Church they belong to.  Priests of the Latin Rite should know how to celebrate the Latin Rite.

Is that too much to ask?

I’m just askin’

In any event, I am grateful to Fr. Cheline for the note.

D. of Metuchen – TLM report

From a reader:

I saw the piece on the Dio. of Alt-J and TLM on your blog and it had me wondering if folks knew that in the Diocese of Metuchen, NJ we have a shrine chapel where TLM has gone from once a month to every day! The former St. Bernard parish church in Raritan, NJ was no longer used because the parish moved to a bigger piece of property and a larger church. The diocese turned the church into the Shrine Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament for daily all-day adoration and Confessions. It has served in the capacity for over a decade now.

Every day mass is celebrated in the morning in the Novus Ordo (in English and Latin ad orientem) and then the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. There are Confessions heard every day. Each evening there is Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:45, pm followed by TLM at 7:00, pm. On Sundays TLM is celebrated at 11:00, am and there is Benediction in the afternoon. The bishop has also given his permission for those who request it to have other Sacraments (like Baptism) celebrated at the Shrine in the extraordinary form and to have funerals there if they desire to have a funeral in the extraordinary form. It is not a parish church but it is a sort of "quasi-parish".

Brick by brick in D. of Altoona-Johnstown

From a reader:

I thought you might be interested to learn of the formal public status of the TLM in Patton, PA, in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.  You might recall that Bishop Adamec was very opposed to the Motu Proprio around the time it was first issued.  Brick by brick.

Napa Valley TLM Alert

From a reader:

After a bit more than a year of work, there is now a weekly TLM in Napa Valley.

It is celebrated at noon in Holy Family Church on Neibaum Road in Rutherford in Napa Valley. Twice a month we have High Mass with a schola and twice Low Mass with the schola only singing hymns at the beginning and end of Mass.

There will be a Midnight Mass for Christmas and a Mass for most Holy Days of Obligation. Our priest is Fr, Mark Kristie, a Carmelite.

Holy Family is a mission church of St. Joan of Arc in Yountville and this Latin Mass community is now an official part of the parish.

I know many of your readers come up here for visits and I wanted to let people know that this Mass is here and we welcome folks who are visiting Napa.

I would love an invitation!   o{]:¬)

Thanks and a sweet Sabine report

What does cold look like?  It was below 0F this morning early.

At least the Sabine Farm is now producing honey!  Some was "spun" not too long ago.

I am very grateful to readers who have recently sent me tokens from my wish list!

Thanks to DC of IN for sending the DVDs of Band of Brothers.  I look forward to watching them!

PM was kind enough to send a pound of Grana Padana Stravecchio.  Yum!

QUAERITUR: chaplaincy

From a priest reader:

Do you know of any traditionally minded communities of sisters or Catholic schools where a chaplain is needed to celebrate the TLM, hear confessions, give conferences, etc?

I am afraid I don’t, Father.  Sorry.

Perhaps some readers might.

You can e-mail me your responses.

A note from Augustine for your consideration

St. Augustine: from a Christmas sermon –  on the harmony between Matthew and Luke on the Lord’s genealogy:

And so, whatever else there is to be said regarding these hidden treasures among God’s mysteries, this is for others who are more diligent and more worthy than we, to bring out.  At all events, we have spoken on this subject to the best of our ability, as the Lord assisted us and inspired us, and as the limitations of time permitted us.  If there be anyone among you who has a profounder grasp of this, let him knock at the door of Him from whom we, too, receive what we are able to grasp, what we are able to say.  But this do keep in mind before all else – you must not lose your composure over matters in Sacred Scripture which you do not yet understand; and when you do understand them, you must not feel conceit.  What you do not understand, threat with reverence and be patient; and what you do understand cherish and keep.  (s. 51.35)

WDTPRS: Thursday 2nd Week of Advent – SUPER OBLATA (2002MR)

We continue our Advent journey through the prayers for Holy Mass.

Today’s Super oblata is the same as that used on Mondays and Thursdays throughout.

SUPER OBLATA (2002MR)
Suscipe, quaesumus, Domine, munera
quae de tuis offerimus collata beneficiis,
et, quod nostrae devotioni concedis effici temporali,
tuae nobis fiat praemium redemptionis aeternae.

This prayer is in the ancient Veronese Sacramentary amongst prayers for the month of July though that version shows a variation in devotionis … temporalis.  Also, and this is interesting, it ends with
_ _ _ __
P F E SP (with lines over the letters), ….

You can find our examination and the answer to the puzzle of "P F E SP" here.

The ADVENT WDTPRS page is here.
