D. Albany: Large old church for sale – $100,000

It isn’t that unusual these days to see that churches are for sale, some of them splendid, all of them once beloved, paid for with the pennies and tears of generations that entrusted their mites to the diocese.  It’s sad.

I was sent a news spot about such a church in Albany… where the “Agony in Albany” was endured for so many years.  HERE

For sale: $100,000

I sent the story to perhaps a dozen friends, clerical and lay.

With one exception so far the first reaction has been: “I hope the SSPX buys it!”

This first reaction would have been the exception a few years ago.  Now it is dominant.

I think the only way for the SSPX to buy it would be through a third party.

One priest offered: “The chancery is just praying for Muslims to buy it”.   His first option was for the SSPX, too, and as an afterthought the FSSP.   But the Muslim thing is real.  In my native place a senior pastor was retired and they alienated the church to a Muslim group.  I saw the photos of them tearing out the Christian symbols.

We have to be realistic about these matters.  If a congregation isn’t paying the bills, and clustering to share the burden isn’t doing it, then something has to be done.  Alienating the property seems short-sighted when there are alternatives.   Traditional groups have been reviving places like this.  Expensive, but working!

One has the impression today that The-Whatever-High-Atop-The-Thing would rather see a building like this turned into a disco or a mosque rather than see a traditional group attracting dozens of dedicated families with lots of children .

Again, the majority, not minority, reaction to my sending friends this story was, “I hope the SSPX buys it!”

From “The Private Diary of Bishop F. Atticus McButterpants” – 23-03-08 – Dozer’s new fundraiser

March 8, 2023

Dear Diary,

Dozer has new fundraiser in his diocese called the “Catholic New Era Fund.” It’s an older low-key nonprofit setup that used to be called the “Bishop’s Fund”. People stopped giving.  So Doze removed the word “bishop”. tweaked it a bit, and the dear old ladies in the pews starred donating again.  Everyone’s happy. He still gets all the money, though, for his pet projects. He really cleaned up from the eight parishes he “alienated”. “Alienate” my hindquarters! Prime real estate. He also sold the air rights over one of the inner-city parishes for a heap of cash. His new cufflinks nearly blinded me.  Wasn’t there a Bling Bishop somewhere? Note: ask Tommy.  This has potential.  I’d like like to get that soup kitchen thing going finally.  And that Murano is calling.

ASK FATHER: What is the status of SSPX weddings when the local bishop denies permission, delegation?

From a reader…

QUAERITUR:

I am from a town where the SSPX has recently established a vibrant chapel and has been extremely generous in providing Traditional Latin Mass and other Sacraments in the traditional rite. The local diocesan parish  has also provided daily TLM but can no longer provide Traditional weddings. Recently there were a couple of weddings that took place at the SSPX chapel for which the local diocesan bishop had refused the necessary “permission”. The (diocesan) parish has announced that these couples’ marriage are of doubtful validity and that those who knowingly attended the wedding should go to Confession before approaching for Holy Communion.

Would you clarify what the canonical status of SSPX weddings (specifically those with denied permissions) is?  Also is it true that attendance at such a wedding constitutes a sin?  Thank you for all that you do those of us living in these confusing times.

Such unnecessary nonsense. For cryin’ out loud!  Just give the SSPX priest delegation already!  What are these bishops so afraid of?  Why are they so spiritually stingy?

Alas, from the point of view of the current Code of Canon Law for the Latin Church, without that delegation, these weddings are invalid.   For the sake of proper form, there has to be a officiating witness to the exchange of vows with proper jurisdiction (such as a pastor in his parish) or delegation of that jurisdiction (such as a visiting priest who comes to do the wedding).  SSPX chapels are not parishes and their priests are not pastors with jurisdiction to witness marriages.  Francis opened this up and made it possible for local bishops to give delegation to SSPX priests for weddings are their chapels.  Most US bishops have done this, I think, and they also have a priest who acts as a kind of liaison in these matters.  Some bishops are rather more narrow-minded and cold-hearted when it comes to the desire of people to tie the knot with the Traditional Rite, probably in the chapel where they grew up.  But why have a pastorally sensitive heart toward these people?  Right?  They are only the most marginalized and now purposely persecuted group in the entire Church.

On another point, I’m not sure why/how the priest at the parish determined that “knowingly attending” these weddings is mortally sinful. First, if the parish needs to inform people, then they did not “knowingly attend” and therefore they did not fulfill one of the portions of committing a mortal sin, that is, knowledge that the act is mortally sinful. Secondly, there’s no prohibition in Canon Law that prohibits the faithful from attending invalid weddings.

Thirdly, while there might be an issue of scandal, to maintain that every scandalous act is mortally sinful would shock even the most hardened Jansenist.

That said, going to confession is certainly a salubrious act.

GO TO CONFESSION!

Here’s a thought.  I recommend that everyone who attended these weddings go to confession.  Get organized and go together.  Go to confession, one after another, to the priest who, sua sponte, declared attendance at these weddings to be mortally sinful. It would be interesting to see his reaction as he walked into the church to hear confessions (assuming he does at all) and saw a hundred people already lined up, and have them, one after another, confess:

“Bless me Father. I attended a lovely wedding for which the cowardly and stingy bishop refused to give his permission.”

Even better would be lining up to go to confession to the bishop himself.

UPDATE:

I should in fairness add this.

When in 2017 the Holy See made it possible for SSPX priests to receive delegation for marriages, there was not a word about invalidity of previous SSPX marriages.   It wasn’t said that the previous SSPX marriages needed any sort of fixing up such as a convalidation.  Convalidation of a marriage is done to remedy some defect in what happened, such as lack of proper form.  In the case of the SSPX priests, they didn’t have jurisdiction or delegated jurisdiction.   You would think that if there was concern that all those previous SSPX marriages were considered by the Holy See to be invalid, some statement to that effect would have been made.  Since 2013 things have been done in canonically strange ways.  For example, the SSPX priests can hear confessions and validly absolve.  But there was never a document explicitly stating that: it was suddenly … was.  This provision was followed up with an indefinite extension for Confession in the 2016 Misericordia et misera, which does call it a “faculty.”

The 2017 Letter: HERE

What is also clear, is that Rome is SILENT on the issue of the SSPX’s arguments regarding the SSPX having “supplied jurisdiction,” etc.

The Church DID NOT say the 2017 Letter was issued because any invalidity of all previous marriages witnessed by the SSPX priests.

What the Letter DOES say is that the Letter was issued, much like the one in 2015 for the Catholic faithful to be able to receive valid absolution from SSPX priests (“such as to ensure the validity and liceity of the Sacrament [of PENANCE] and allay any concerns on the part of the faithful”), “(f)ollowing the same pastoral outlook [for WEDDINGS, as for CONFESSION] which seeks to reassure the conscience of the faithful…” so that “any uncertainty regarding the validity of the sacrament of marriage may be alleviated.”

From “The Private Diary of Bishop F. Atticus McButterpants” – 23-03-07 – A visit from Bp. Antuninu “Dozer” Ruspa

Dozer came for a visit, stayed over. Long overdue. We went out for dinner and stayed up late.  He’s just back from a trip to Rome.  He went to Sicily too, of course.  He looks well-rested. We caught up on where all our former seminary classmates are now, poor bastards.

He came in his new Tesla. Looks incredible but it’s a tight squeeze for me. I’ll stick with my Lexus for now but I’ll probably have to get a Murano with all the smells and bells cause lot of the bishops drive those now. Gotta stay with the gang.  Fr. Tommy will like driving a Murano.   If we have to spend so much time in cars going around in the diocese they might as well be nice.

Now I owe Dozer a visit.  I need to check out his place. He remodeled the kitchen and all six bathrooms. There’d better be enough marble left for my bathroom makeover!

I put Chester in the deluxe kennel to avoid another incident.  I never want to have to take Dozer to the emergency room again. Chester’s gonna be even more out of control and will pee on everything in sight, butchya gotta do what ya gotta do. Or what Fr. Tommy’s gotta do.

Question for readership: Coping with a Cope

From a reader…

QUAERITUR:

My parish priest has asked me to find a trustworthy cleaner  who can clean an old, very beautiful and still in very good shape Cope. It was made in France for the local Polish church and seems to have gold thread, satin with lots of embroidery and is of a very high quality. Any thoughts? I am located in the north east of the USA but obviously am willing to mail it. Thank you.

Any thoughts?

7 March – OLDIE PODCAzT 141: Two Prayers of St. Thomas Aquinas and a 1st class relic

Today is the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor, the only saint mentioned in Canon Law apart from feasts.  Canon Law requires that seminarians be formed especially according to the thought of St. Thomas.  HA!

Remember how Aquinas was instrumentalized to justify Communion for those in objective adultery according to that infamous footnote in Amoris laetitia? For more about that, I suggest THIS and THIS.   It’s quite shocking.   The Angelic Doctor would be horrified.

In any event, here is an oldie but goodie.

___

In the post-Conciliar, Novus Ordo calendar today [28 Jan] is the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (+1274).  Let’s hear two prayers from the Angelic Doctor, his Prayer Before Mass and Communion and his Prayer After Mass and Communion in both Latin and English.

Some of the music came from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist.

As a bonus, here is my 1st class relic of the saint.

Pro Chess League resumes tomorrow, 8 March.

IMPORTANT BOOK

However, the 2023 Chessable Masters is 4-7 April and it will be the last time 32-year old Magnus Carlsen completes while holding the title “World Champion”.  He will remain the high rated player in the world and arguably the “GOAT”. He has been World Champion for over a decade. The upcoming world championship match will end by 1 May and either China’s Ding Liren or Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi will hold the title World Champion. Whether or not they will be able to beat Magnus in tournaments is another matter.

In other news, the Russian Chess Federation (largest in the world – 35K players and 200 GMs) have broken with the European Chess Union and are joining the Asia Chess Federation. It is excepted that some players will break with Russia and will join European groups. Does it make a difference what flag a play plays under? I guess it does for events like the Olympics.
