23 May – HOLY MASS (TLM) St. Giovanni Battista de Rossi – LIVE VIDEO: 1200h CDT (GMT/UTC -5)

I will LIVE stream a Traditional Latin Mass at NOON Central Daylight Time (= GMT/UTC -5 and ROME 1900h).

I moved the microphone.  I hope it picks up better than it did.

Today: Mass for St. Giovanni Battista de Rossi, confessor.   The texts are in the appendix of the Missale Romanum (PSPAL – Masses in some places).  I will add special collects for an intention. This saint, very dear to the Romans, was originally buried under a side altar of the church which is now the “Traditional” parish of Rome, Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini, my “adoptive parish” in the City. His body was (sadly) moved when a church was built and named for him. The original inscription remains at Ss. Trinità.  He was a great saint.

Will you please tell others about this Mass?  Will you please subscribe to my channel? HERE

  • NB: You can find an English translation of the Mass formulary HERE.  Scroll down. Use the 1960 setting.
  • We can say the Regina Caeli together, since the Angelus bells are usually ringing when the live stream starts.
  • I will say a Spiritual Communion prayer at the very beginning for those of you who cannot make a Eucharistic Communion.
  • I will also recite in Latin the traditional  “Statement of Intention” (…a hint to priests).
  • After Mass and the Leonine Prayers, I will recite a prayer in Latin “In time of pandemic” followed by a blessing with a fragment of the Cross

ASK FATHER: Can you fulfill your Sunday Mass obligation during “lockdown” by watching online?

From a reader…

QUAERITUR:

While on lockdown, can watching (within a sunday) a replayed online mass fulfill the sunday mass obligation? Or must one have to watch the online sunday mass in real time to fulfill this obligation?

First of all, it is likely that in your diocese the local bishop has lifted the Sunday obligation.  That is to say, the bishop has, by his authority, removed – for the time being – the obligation to participate at Mass on Sundays and other days of obligation.

Check with your local chancery if you don’t know that for sure.  I’ll bet they have.

Second, NO, you do not fulfill your obligation by watching either a Mass streamed live online or a recorded Mass.   You do NOT fulfill your obligation when you have one.

However, if there is no obligation to fulfill, go ahead and watch or not watch as you wish.  It could be meritorious and helpful for you.

Even when you do not have a strict obligation, it is important that you keep the Lord’s Day holy.   Watching a Mass can help you will that.

Church that refused to close during lock down gets burned down

From Daily Wire:

‘Bet You Stay Home Now Hypokrits’: Church That Refused To Close During Lockdown Gets Burned Down, Investigated As Arson

A Mississippi church in the midst of a legal battle to stay open despite local shutdown orders was burned to the ground early Wednesday morning. According to first responders, the First Pentecostal Church of Holly Springs was vandalized and suffered a large explosion to the back of the church. The incident is being investigated as a criminal act of arson.

“I Bet you stay home now you hypokrits,” read one message spray painted on the church parking lot, Thomas More Society senior counsel and lawyer for the church Stephen Crampton told Fox News on Thursday.

“First Pentacostal Church Holly Springs. Arson is Suspected,” reported Tom Dees of FOX 13 Memphis. “Investigators say the church was spray painted with graffiti and set on fire. There was a major explosion in the back of the church that blew out the front.”

[…]

Crampton suggested to Fox News that First Pentecostal Church was targeted for “being outspoken and somewhat firm about seeking to protect their Constitutional rights.”

“We’re in a time where I don’t think it’s any secret that there’s a growing hostility toward churches, across the board,” the lawyer said. “And now, here are churches like First Pentecostal that are sort of stirring up the waters by being outspoken and somewhat firm about seeking to protect their Constitutional rights.”

“They’ve had bad comments [sent their way] on social media,” Crampton continued, adding, “There is just a segment that takes issue with the church standing up, and the church just being the church.”

Fr. Z with thanks to benefactors and a reminder

Lately I have received thing from my wishlist that a) arrived but I wasn’t alerted and b) there were no gift slips in the packages.

Hence, something my thanks came late and, at other times, my thanks didn’t come at all.

I know that God knows who you are.

I will say a Mass for benefactors on Saturday, 23 May.

I am grateful to all of you who have subscribed to send donations or who have donated occasionally.  Thank you.  I am grateful to you who have sent things from my wishlist.

I am also grateful that some of you use my links to buy things through Amazon.  Could I ask that more of you do that?  Whenever you use Amazon?   The small percent that comes from those purchases (I can’t see who buys what) are a major source of my income.  I just got notice that my insurance rates are going up again.  It’s getting ridiculous. PLEASE do remember me when you are online shopping. It makes a huge difference.

WISHLIST: HERE

AMAZON LINKS: US HERE – UK HERE

DONATE “ad hoc”: For a one time donation… HERE

ALSO THROUGH – CONTINUE TO GIVE(alternative to PayPal)

Some options

Finally, I will be raising some money to return to Rome for a time, in October. The last time I was there for the whole month, people seemed to enjoy my daily posts. I can promise more of the same. Watch for the wavvy Vatican flag!

Forty, a poem, and ancient garlic cheese spread

This is wonderful.

I’ve written of garum in the past.  It’s modern near equivalent is colatura.

I have also – is this a surprise? – written about moretum and the Virgilian poem!

Moretum is a spread made from cheese, herbs and garlic.  The post was called, for those who get this, “Spem in allium“.

Meanwhile, the other Spem in alium, the 40 voice – yes 40 – is hard to perform, because, well… 40, right?

But today is Ascension THURSDAY, and we are 40 days from Easter, this seemed like a good thing to add to this post.  Thomas Tallis.
