Veterans Day & Remembrance Day

This is the most beautiful thing I’ve heard in a long time.  Biretta tip to a commentator here. o{]:¬)

While it is true that today is not US Memorial Day, it is Veterans Day and, in the commonwealth nations, Remembrance Day.

Here is a setting of Lux perpetua from the Requiem Mass set to an arrangement of Edward Elgar’s “Nimrod” from the Enigma Variations.  Sung by Voces8.  US HERE – UK HERE

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord, with Thy saints, forever, for Thou art Merciful.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Your Sunday Sermon Notes

Was there a good point made in the sermon you heard at the Mass that fulfilled your Sunday Obligation? What was it?

For my part, I got to be the deacon for a Solemn Mass today and did not have to preach.  Had I preached, off the top of my head I would probably have spoken to the way that both the Herodians and the Pharisees used flattery to lure the Lord into either siding with the Romans (temporal authority) or with God (spiritual authority).  Flattery is one of the ways in which we can participate in the sin of another.   Those ways are:

  1. counsel
  2. command
  3. consent
  4. provocation
  5. praise or flattery
  6. concealment
  7. partaking
  8. silence
  9. the defense of the ill done

Off the top of my head.

Otherwise, I might have spoken about the wickedness of inciting people to rebel against proper and just authority, both temporal and spiritual.  That, of course, leads to the problem of what to do in the face of improper and unjust authority.

Rome: Mass at St. John Lateran for Dedication – wierd

I saw some of the video of the Mass at the Lateran, Rome’s Cathedral Church, for the feast of its dedication, 9 November.

Strange.  Two things.

Where are the altar candles?

What’s with shapeless bag albs and no cinctures?   There were other men serving in cassock and surplice, presumably from the Major Seminary next door.  But, what’s with the shapeless bags?

UPDATE

Someone wrote to say that the candles are in front of the altar.

It looks as if the candles for a altar have been placed on the railing around the confessio.

I say that makes them confessio rail candles, not altar candles.   And there is not altar crucifix.   Instead, they have suspended a cross over the altar underneath the baldachin.

It’s beautiful.  It’s not a crucifix.

This arrangement seems to be … I don’t know what it is.  I’ve seen a crucifix suspend on a baldachin in Milan, at Sant’Ambrogio if memory serves.  This seems sui generis…. as in… “Let’s make up a new way to do it!”  Anyone?

What the altar ought to look like.

Another thing.  Msgr. Guido Marini, the Papal MC, is no where to be seen.  Perhaps because this is a… I dunno… diocesan thing?  So, he is “Bishop of Rome” here and not, therefore, “papal”?

A couple more observations.   He didn’t preach from his cathedra even though he was in his Cathedral.   He, again, didn’t genuflect at the two-fold consecration of the Eucharist.

Happy 244th Birthday USMC!

Raising a glass, especially to those now actively carrying the torch of freedom!

Have a ball and no heel-taps.

Today, instead of my usual daily carry coin, I’ll haul this one around.

@DouthatNYT interviews Card. Burke

May I preface this by saying that I am still angry at the way former-cardinal-bishop-priest Theodore McCarrick was handled?  For his punishment he was made again a lay person?!?  REALLY?  Most of you reading this are lay people.  THAT’s a punishment?  And if the powers that be say that, “Well, we don’t intend laicization as ‘punishment’, per se…”, then that means he hasn’t been punished at all!   So, I am angry about that.

I think the Rite of Degradation of a Bishop should be applied to him, all the down through all the orders he ever received…. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.

That said…

Ross Douthat of the NYT had an interview with Raymond Leo Card. Burke.

He asked some good questions.

For example:

Douthat: But what if it’s in the nature of a hierarchy to allow people in positions of authority to suspend the rules? What if you need more democratic accountability somewhere or the law won’t be enforced?

Burke: Well, clearly Christ constituted the church as a hierarchical communion. His public ministry immediately took these 12 men aside and prepared them. They weren’t all angels either, as we know. But there is always a temptation to infidelity to the pastoral office, to permit things that are evil when it comes to a friend. This, by the way, is “clericalism.” Clericalism has nothing to do with being interested in the liturgy or wanting to wear a cassock. No, clericalism is the abuse of the office of cleric for sinful purposes.

So, yes, there have to be controls and they actually existed in the 1917 Code of Canon Law. Up until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council there were a whole series of rites for the degradation of a cleric who betrayed the holiness of his office.

Douthat: Some of them very vivid rites.

Burke: Very vivid. For instance, if it was an archbishop or bishop, they’d dress him in the full vestments and then take them off one by one, with these very severe declarations, and then at the end, scrape the hands that had been anointed at ordination with a knife [or with a shard of glass!] to signify that this person had completely betrayed the office.

Douthat: Would you like to see such a rite applied to, for instance, the now-former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick?

Burke: I would say that it’s the proper way to go.

[…]

Do I hear an “Amen!”?

And he’s not the only one.

In public.  Prominently, to repair something of the scandal.

CQ CQ CQ Ham Radio Saturday: ZedNet revived

ZedNet has been quiet over the last month. I had sketchy internet in Rome.

However, I saw a registration recently in which the registrant, also a ham, specifically mentioned ZedNet.

We should get this going.

For more on ZedNet – HERE.

In short, this is a DMR mode.  In various posts I’ve described how I connect and I include a “bill of materials” provided by frequent commentator here WB0YLE, who also set up the EchoLink room.  It is neither difficult nor expensive to get going on ZedNet.  You need to assemble some hardware if you are not already set up, register with Brandmeister, if necessary.

Yaesu System Fusion (Wires-X) “room” 28598, is cross-linked to
Brandmeister (BM) DMR worldwide talkgroup 31429.

It is time for me to fire up the rig as well.  I understand from my local Elmer that there has been a little sunspot activity and lots of hams are taking advantage of it.

Hopefully we will have contact via ZedNet or maybe SSB!  While I am at home, I’ll have my ZedNet dedicated handheld ready to receive.

Meanwhile, 73!

Wherein Fr. Z maps weird things, connects dots, rants a lot, and offers an ACTION ITEM!

Yesterday evening I wrote about “creeping incrementalism” which can manifest in different ways, namely, the slow removal of things, until something is changed, and the slow addition.  Think of removing grains from a heap of sand until there is now longer a heap, or the addition of heat to water in which one desires to boil a frog.  Another way is the replacement of one thing with another, as a commentator mentioned, such as the process of petrification, minerals replacing organic matter.

These processes are slow.  They are used by the Enemy, so that we are not suddenly alarmed and make changes to reverse course and correct our ways.

For some time, as I hear about bizzare things going on in and around the Vatican City State, I’ve been trying to connect the dots.   This morning I connected literal dots just to see what a few of these strange things looked like, mapped out.

  • There was a horrible drug fueled homosexual orgy at the Palazzo Sant’Uffizio some years back.  That’s in the very building where the CDF and the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei” are housed.  Where the Faith is defended and where Tradition is being fostered.  The CDF also handles the graviora delicta, abuse matters.  This is also very close to the a) place where Peter was crucified, b) the Synod Hall, c) the Casa Santa Marta (where Francis lives), d) the Basilica where Peter’s bones are.
  • A ceremony was held in the Vatican Gardens near the Museums where a tree was planted and an imam recited a sutra from the Koran that was intended to claim territory for “Allah”.  That video was scrubbed and the whole thing buried.  I recently went to that spot and saw the tree.  There is no plaque for the event, though all the other commemorative trees have a plaque.
  • A pagan ritual was held in the Vatican Gardens near the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes.  A statue of Pachamama was venerated in a ritual way.  A pagan idol was venerated, in violation of the 1st Commandment.  This idol was ubiquitous during the Amazon Synod as were black bowls used in the rite to invoke that demon.   I know at least one priest who went to that place and recited Ch. 3 of Title in the Roman Ritual to exorcise a place.
  • Pagan symbols including many Pachamama idols with obscene dehumanizing photos were displayed in a church just up the main street extending to St. Peter’s Basilic, in Santa Maria in Traspontina.  There were regular ceremonies there to venerate the demonic idols over a period of a month.  An young Austrian man took some of the idols from this church and threw them into the Tiber River.
  • During the closing Mass of the Amazon Synod, one of those black bowls with a plant with red flowers, associated with the cult of the demon Pachamama, was placed – at the order of Francis – on the very altar of Saint Peter’s Basilica directly over the place where the bones of St. Peter are located.

What does that look like on a map?

These places are not very far apart.  Vatican City State is small.

What does this mean?   I have no idea what it means, exactly, other than that it means nothing good.  However, if I were on the side of the Enemy, I would probably want to make sure that events which summon the demonic should occur close to this most holy site.

Demons are attracted by certain actions and they then cling to the places where they were perpetrated.  Their claims must be broken by exorcism.

I have to ask this… what a sad this it is to have to ask… do priests and bishops out there really believe in Satan and the fallen angels and the whole spiritual battle that is being waged for our souls?  Do they believe in possession, oppression, infestation?  The power of sacramentals?  SACRAMENTS?   Really believe?

I’ve written this before, but I’ll post it again.  And again.  And again.  And again… until I start getting notes from priests and bishops about what they are doing.

Priests and bishops are not primarily administrators or coordinators.  They are not primarily nice guys or social workers or hand holders.  While ministry might include those things, they are primarily for offering the Sacrifice of the Mass and for exercising the Keys, by forgiving sins and by sanctifying, breaking the bonds of the Prince of this world and bring the presence of the King.   Anyone can do those other things.  Only the sacerdos can do those other things.  Let priests be priests.  There is nothing more important than a priest or a bishop can do than mediate for the people in the sanctuary of the holy places, churches, and to go to bless and cleanse where needed.

If I were Pope, I would weekly send exorcists around the curial offices to clean house.  If I were a bishop, I would weekly send priests around blessing the work spaces of the chancery and sprinkling holy water and even blessed salt.  Pastors of souls should do that for their rectories.  Fathers of families should ask the priest to bless their homes.

Hell and demons are real, friends. And they really hate you.  Fight back.  Use sacramentals. Even more powerful than sacramentals are sacraments.

Again, as I have written before…

We can get down in the dumps about what is going on or we can rise up and fight back.

I want to keep as many of you out of Hell as I can and enjoy the glory of Heaven with you when our time comes.

For now, however, we are in The Fight Of Our Lives.

So, you read about awful things in the Church and heresy and stupidity from her duly appointed pastors?  Fine.  If the Church is being attacked with such fury, and from the inside, that means that the Church is exactly what we need to belong to!

Paradoxically, the corruption we see and the infidelity we read of are proofs of the Church’s divine origin.

And since Christ founded the Church, that’s the Church I want to be in, flaws, wickedness and all.

Next, battle isn’t pretty.  Just as a soldier in the state of grace who does his duty knows that even in battle he is in the “safest” place he can be, so too we know that we members of the Church in the state of grace are in the safest place we could be, even though corruption and infidelity and disgusting things are going on at every level.  Since the Church is of divine origin, there is no place else we should ever want to be.   We can be sad sometimes at the results of the battle.  We can be afraid sometimes in the midst of the battle.  But let us not waiver in our trust in Christ’s promises.  Heaven is our reward, not worldly security, even in the Church.  The Lord is my strength and shield and my trusting heart exalts in Him and with song I’ll give Him thanks even for the terrible battle that it falls to me to fight as His priest.

Moreover, Rome is only Rome.  The “Vatican” is only the Vatican.  Curial structures are not of divine origin.  Christ promised nothing to the Roman Curia.  He made no guarantees that the Faith would be preserved in the Curia.  “Put not your trust in princes: In the children of men, in whom there is no salvation.”

Stick to the true and the proven.  Stick to traditional sources for the review of the content of your Catholic Faith.  Remember too that the content of your Faith is not just stuff to be read and memorized, but is also a Person with whom you have a relationship.  Stick to Christ.  Use the sacraments well.  Review your own state in life and, having determined your duties and obligations, carry them out faithfully and with singularity of purpose.  Examine your conscience and…

GO TO CONFESSION!

ACTION ITEM

Were every reader here, today, to examine his or her conscience and then GO TO CONFESSION!, offering up prayers of reparation for sins committed by faithless priests and bishops, faithless catholics who twist souls through their media outlets (Fishwrap, America, Commonweal, The Tablet, etc.), imagine the blow that would give to the Enemy.

Were every reader here, today, to take up the call of the Mother of God and do what she asked in praying the Rosary and making acts of reparation, imagine what a ripple effect that would have.

You are NOT few in number, dear readers.  YOUR acts of reparation would be NOT a few.  You can have an impact.

Were you to make an act of reparation and pray for forgiveness and conversion each time you read a story about the faithless agents of Hell who twist papal documents to contradict the Church’s true teachings, who are caught in the commission of evil acts, who distort minds and hearts through their horrid reporting or opinion pieces at certain internet sources… imagine the impact.

You might also pick a particularly annoying priest or bishop or media person who is clearly in trouble and dedicate some of your prayers for him.

Remember the prayer before using the internet. HERE

Remember also the prayer for the conversion or destruction of the Fishwrap.  HERE

Remember to activate your Confirmation.  HERE

Remember The Bux Protocol™.  HERE

Remember the Act of Reparation taught by the Angel of of Peace at Fatima:

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, I adore You profoundly and I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He Himself is offended. And by the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners.

We are not helpless in this battle, friends.  We have mighty spiritual weapons, made strong and good by Christ.

FIGHT!

Do I hear an “Amen!”?

UPDATED: United Nations published environment, population control children’s book called “Pachamama”

Do you know about the so-called “Sorites or Heap Paradox”?

Imagine you have a heap of sand.  You begin one by one to remove the individual grains of sand.  One by one.

QUAERITUR: At what point is that collection of sand grains no longer a “heap”?

At a certain point, it stops being a “heap” and becomes some other collection of sand grains.  And then none.

Is that what is going on in certain sectors of the Church?   Remove elements until it is no long a Church, but rather an NGO with a really wide-spread network?

Is that what is going on in certain sectors of the Church regarding our Catholic Faith?  Remove or change or add elements until at some point it is a different religion?

You can draw your own conclusions about what is going on in the Church over the last decades.  You can consider this in more recent goings on, in the time leading up to, during, and after the pre-programmed Amazon Synod (“walking together”), with its funding from the German Church and the Ford Foundation… along with their agendas.

Now I see at Ed Pentin’s place this really creepy bit of information.

Again, it concerns the demon idol venerated before during and at the end of the Synod, Pachamama.

Mind you, Francis invited form UN chief Ban Ki-moon and major abortion activist Jeffrey Sachs to participate in the Amazon Synod.  HERE Francis also said that we have to obey the UN.  HERE

Now for Pentin.  My emphases and comments.

Pachamama: New to the Vatican But No Stranger to the UN

The United Nations Environment Programme published a children’s textbook in 2002 interestingly entitled Pachamama — a course on why the world’s environment is being degraded and an assessment of “how our Mother Earth is doing today.”

The UNEP says in the book that “Pachamama” means not just ‘Mother Earth’ in Inca culture but also “living in total harmony with the Earth and not from the Earth. It suggests a lifestyle in harmony with nature.”  [That sounds rather like what they were talking about at the Synod (“walking together”).]

During the Amazon Synod last month, what the Holy Father called “Pachamama” statues regularly appeared in churches, ceremonies and the synod hall. Pictures of indigenous people bowing down before them in the Vatican Gardens and in a church nearby led many faithful to see them as idols, leading Austrian Catholic Alexander Tschugguel to seize four of them and throw them into the Tiber.

The UNEP’s Pachamama course appears benign by contrast but its first of 7 modules is about “population growth,” teaching children that populations grow “more slowly” if each set of parents “only has one child.” It then predictably argues for “sustainable development” and goes on to teach about such subjects as “measuring pollution,” “government action,” and “understanding biodiversity.”  [The Italian bishops published a booklet with a pray to Pachamama, as some sort of embodiment of the environment. HERE]

In its children’s book, the UNEP doesn’t describe the Pachamama as an idol of course — instead it seems to have just borrowed the word for the course’s title which consists of contributions from young people, authors and artists.  [It’s called “creeping incrementalism”.  You prepare the terrain carefully, patiently.  You plant seeds well in advance, looking down the line for the harvest.]

But the connection with the “Pachamama” and the UNEP shows that its appearance at the synod did not happen by chance, and is, in its own way, another indication of the ever-increasing “inculturation” of the UN and the global environmental movement into the very marrow of the Vatican.

***

As an addendum, Melinda Gates, a liberal Catholic whose Gates Foundation promotes similar globalist values diametrically opposed to Church teaching, privately met the Pope on Wednesday, according to a reliable source. The Vatican and the Gates Foundation were asked twice if they could confirm the meeting but neither responded.

Put separate puzzle pieces together and, slowly, a picture emerges.

Creeping incrementalism.

There is the Sorites Paradox: slow removal of grains. There is the Frog in the Water method: slow addition of heat.

By one method you change the thing by removal.  By the other method you change the thing by addition.

It is said that, “That which we tolerate today we will embrace tomorrow.”   The Enemy is good at being an enemy.  The Enemy moves patiently, through the knowledge that were we to be jerked off course too quickly, we might wake up and haul the boat around to the right course again.  We might turn the heat down, or start putting the grains back.

Our response?

  • Deeper fidelity to our vocations.
  • Promotion of traditional sacred liturgical worship.
  • Acts of penance and reparation.
  • Prayer for the perpetrators and prayer against all their projects.

UPDATE 9 Nov:

I received these two note during the night.

First,

Also during the synod, the 2008 cartoon, “Pachamama “, was listed on Netflix as “trending“ Family Movie.

Thank you for all your “better than the news” information.

And also…

Dear Fr Z, fyi- just started running a few months ago on Netflix- animated film called “pachamama”. Was 14yrs in development. A quote from the end of linked Variety background article:
“With “Pachamama” about to make its global debut, Antin is working on his next project, writing a script along the same lines as “Pachamama,” but set in the Amazon.”

Juan Antin’s Animated Film ‘Pachamama’ Bows on Netflix June 7 – Variety

Some people with huge money and influence worked for a long time to develop these projects and then bring them together into public view not only during a Synod (“walking together”) but to the very altar of St. Peter’s Basilica.

ASK FATHER: I’ve lost all desire and motivation to pray, fast, etc. It all seems so pointless.

From a reader…

QUAERITUR:

I’ve lost all desire and motivation to pray, fast, etc. I’ve become apathetic towards the spiritual life. It all seems so pointless. God stopped listening and caring about me years ago, and I feel as though my time would be better spent actually doing things that will help me rather than spend the time in prayer asking God to help me (which he never does). At the same time, I don’t want to go to hell, but I just can’t motivate myself to pray or do anything related to the spiritual life. It all seems so pointless. I feel like God just doesn’t care about me anymore. Pray or don’t pray, my life is still the *****. What do you recommend?

This sounds rather like the affliction of acedia or accidie (from Greek akedía, “I don’t care-ishness”). This is “spiritual sloth”, which is one of the seven capital or deadly sins.  It has to do with lack of concern for or regret about one’s spiritual well-being especially because of the obligations it involves. In many cases this is a venial sin but it can be a mortal sin if this lack of care or regret leads to omitting grave duties of one’s state of life and the duties of religion.

Rather than address this at length here, allow me to recommend some good reading.

First, The Noonday Devil: Acedia, the Unnamed Evil of Our Times by Jean-Charles Nault.

US HERE – UK HERE

Also, Acedia and Its Discontents: Metaphysical Boredom in an Empire of Desire by R.J. Snell.

US HERE – UK HERE

As we move deeper into the Passion that the Church is bound to undergo now, I suspect that this will be an affliction for many good people who, in anxiety and frustration, may retreat into acedia in a kind of self-afflicting self-defense choice.   But it is a dead end.  We were made for glory and God always and constantly offers us the graces we need.  There are times when He will withdraw consolations from us, or a sense of His presence, for the sake of testing our love and will to persevere.   Even when we have fallen into mortal sin, God extends to us those prevenient graces which work to stir within us the wherewithal to seek Him again through interior conversion and the sacraments.

God truly is like the father in the Lord’s parable about prodigal son.  Eventually the thought of home and the wretchedness of his condition moves the son.   But the father’s role is foundational, because he provided in the first place the home which becomes the object of his longing. Also, the father was watching watching watching the road for the son and then rushed to meet him.  “But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.” Luke 15:20.

Since you’ve asked for help, probably under the guidance of God, here’s some help.  Use the reading and say to yourself, often, to the point of memorization, the Acts of Faith, Hope, Love and Contrition.  Try these at least three times a day, to start.

I like the versions with “Thees and Thous”!

ACT OF FAITH

O MY GOD, I firmly believe that Thou art one God in Three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. I believe that Thy Divine Son became Man, and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, Who canst neither deceive nor be deceived.

ACT OF HOPE

O MY GOD, relying on Thy almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I
hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Thy grace, and Life Everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer.

ACT OF CHARITY

O MY GOD, I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

ACT OF CONTRITION

O MY GOD, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

WDTPRS – 32nd Ordinary Sunday: Your mission as a Christian

CLICK TO DONATE

Let’s look at the Collect for the 32nd Ordinary Sunday, keeping in mind that Monday, 11 Nov 2019 is Armistice or Veterans Day, also called Remembrance Day.

DONATE to the Archdiocese for Military Services!

Sunday’s Collect has an antecedent in the Gelasian Sacramentary, is also used in the Extraordinary Form on the 19th Sunday after Pentecost.

Omnipotens et misericors Deus, universa nobis adversantia propitiatus exclude, ut, mente et corpore pariter expediti, quae tua sunt liberis mentibus exsequamur.

Adversantia is from adverso(r), “to stand opposite to one, to be against, resist, oppose (in his opinions, feelings, intentions, etc.)”. Resistere denotes resistance through external action.   The distinction of “internal” and “external” is useful in understanding our prayer.  We are challenged from without, but the greatest challenges come from within.  We must constantly cope with the unreconstructed effects of original sin and also the diabolical workings of the Enemy, who stirs up passions and memories, and who implants wicked thoughts and images.   Holy Church prays at Compline every night (in the Extraordinary Form): “Be sober and vigilant: for your adversary (adversarius) the devil is going around like a roaring lion seeking whom he might devour: whom you must resist (resistite), strong in the faith.”  (1 Peter 5:8).

Expediti, is from expedio meaning,“to extricate, disengage, set free”, and when applied to persons, “to be without baggage”.  Thus, an expeditus, is “a soldier lightly burdened, a swiftly marching soldier.” You might have heard of St Expeditus (feast day 19 April), patron saint of procrastinators and, for reasons perfectly clear to me, computer programmers.  St Expeditus is depicted as a Roman solider holding aloft a Cross, upon which is written, “HODIE…. TODAY”, and below his feet, “CRAS… TOMORROW”.  I am sure you are now praying to Expeditus that I will stop this digression and swiftly march on.

That quae tua sunt is, literally, “things which are yours”.  There isn’t room here to get into why but this phrase refers to things God wills or commands.  Think of when the young Jesus told His Mother and Joseph, “I must be about my Father’s business” (cf Luke 2:49).

LITERAL VERSION:

Almighty and merciful God, having been appeased, keep away from us all things opposing us, so that, having been unencumbered in mind and body equally, we may with free minds accomplish the things which you will.

CURRENT ICEL (2011):

Almighty and merciful God, graciously keep from us all adversity, so that, unhindered in mind and body alike, we may pursue in freedom of heart the things that are yours.

OBSOLETE (1973):

God of power and mercy, protect us from all harm. Give us freedom of spirit and health in mind and body to do your work on earth.

What thin gruel we were given for so many years.  Good riddance.  And yet my spies tell me that Liturgiam authenticam is pretty much a dead letter in the Congregation.   Once again the principle cunctando regitur mundus carried the day.

This Collect appears also in the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1742 in the section on “Human Freedom in the Economy of Salvation”:

“Almighty and merciful God, in your goodness take away from us all that is harmful, so that, made ready both in mind and body, we may freely accomplish your will.”

Our Collect this week provides us with military language consonant with the three-fold understanding of Holy Church as Militant, Suffering, and Triumphant.

We are beset by enemies and obstacles (adversantia).   We are presented as lightly burdened foot soldiers (expediti) on an urgent mission.  Before battles soldiers shed their heavier gear in order to move more freely.

By grueling and repetitious training, their bodies are strengthened and hardened.  Because of tedious drills, their minds are freed up (liberis mentibus).

Though they are afraid, they act when their commanders are sure, true, courageous.

This is the ideal for the soldier.  It must be the Christian ideal too.

Virtues are habits developed over time by repetition and discipline.  Our Church’s pastors are our officers who will lead us through adversities on the path towards the heavenly patria.

There are times in the Church’s history that our officers fail us badly or they fall.  When they fall, it is time for the non-coms to take their place, and so forth.

Fulton Sheen said,

“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”

Click!

In time of need, we have to step up and get the job done without whining, without hesitation.  That means that  all of us, at every level, need to know who we are and what our objectives are.  We have to be, all of us, on board with those objectives and be committed to them.  We have to know who we are and what we are about.  Our identity is critical to our operational success.  This is why our liturgical rites are so important in any and every objective we have as Catholics: We are our rites!

We must learn and review the content of our Faith, especially in the fundamentals. With discipline and dedication we must frequent the sacraments.  We must practice our Faith so that it is so much a part of us that it carries us through even the worst moments we face.  We must worship properly and fulfill the duties of religion.

For a long time people criticized education by memorization and repetition.  They claimed that children just mouth things they don’t understand.  On the other hand, though they might not understand them at the moment, one day in the future they do.  When they need it, they remember something important because, long ago, someone made them learn it.

Soldiers, sailors, marines gripe during basic training and entertain homicidal thoughts about their drill instructors.  Not a few return to their instructors later and thank them.  When the time came for that skill or tool or piece of knowledge to be used in a critical moment, they had it.

That us!

We have to have our catechism down cold and we need to be able to repeat it, explain it, demonstrate it with easy.

If we can’t… then who are we?

We are pilgrim soldiers of the Church Militant.  Our march is perilous. To reach heaven, we need training, discipline, nourishment. What are we for our brethren?  Our children?  Our flocks?

We need leadership from bishops and priests who sound a clarion call certain and clear.

We need courageous officers who drill us, who say “NO!” and who say “GO!”
