A reading tip – Catholic Priests Falsely Accused: The Facts, The Fraud, The Stories

Not exactly light reading, but this is an important topic… and not just for priests and bishops!  Everyone should be concerned about this.

Check out David F. Pierre Jr.’s book Catholic Priests Falsely Accused: The Facts, The Fraud, The Stories.

I ordered it from Amazon and I think it has shipped. Fr. Gordon MacRae has a good review of this: http://www.thesestonewalls.com/ on his blog this week. There is a chapter about Fr. MacRae in this book. I agree, Father Z, I used to not realize what a huge problem this is. I knew it was a big problem (falsely accused priests) but I didn’t know how big.

Downloading it onto my Kindle right now – thanks for the info. Look forward to reading it.

I definitely will be ordering it. I wonder if the book covers a related topic that has had me questioning many things recently. A very dear priest-friend of mine who basically taught me everything I know, was accused back in 2002 with some allegations from the the 50′s and 60′s. He was, obviously, taken out of active ministry. At great personal expense, he worked to exonerate himself and was cleared, after 5 years, by both civil and criminal authorities. One of the two claimants was confused and the other just lied outright. However…and here is the scariest part…he was still forced to retire prior to his 75th birthday and is now 80 years old in failing health. At this time, the diocese refuse to re-instate him or allow him to function publically as a priest. When he dies, he will not be given a mass for a deceased priest. He will be buried as a layman. His appeal lingers in Rome, but I’m sure he will die before that comes back. This God-fearing man gave his life in service of the Church, which has now all but forgotten him. So sad. I’m afraid there are many more like him.

  4. Liz says:

guatadopt, that is TERRIBLE! I will pray for him. I wish I could have a mass said for him. This is exactly the sort of thing that is happening. People make these claims and it’s especially evil b/c these sorts of things are so hard to disprove. But please don’t give up hope. I just heard of another falsely accused priest whose has just had what appears to be encouraging news from Rome. God will bless these good priests in the end. (p.s. one of our blessings is from Guatemala)

  5. Irene says:

Has anyone here read his previous (August 2010) book on the subject: “Double Standard: Abuse Scandals and the Attack on the Catholic Church”?
I have not read it, but wonder if the latest book covers much of the same information?

I know of a priest who was falsely accused, and it turned out that he was in Belgium during the alledged incident, but it took him three years to clear his name.

  6. guatadopt says:

Thank you Liz. It’s hard not to give up hope. If he isn’t buried with the proper funeral due a priest it will be a travesty.

  7. Liz says:

guatadopt, I doubt you will see this, but I will say a prayer to St. Anthony that you somehow will. If you go to http: //holysoulshermitage.com/ and scroll down to Help These Great Cloistered Nuns Pray for Martyr Priests, Priests. I think it will fill you with hope as it did me. I lit a candle and prayed for your priest at Benediction last night. God reward him for his priesthood and suffering! (Maybe I will call him Fr. W for Fr. Whoever…LOL!)
