Wyoming Catholic College – Missae Solemnes!

There was a fine event at one of my favorite places in these USA, Wyoming Catholic College, located in the burgeoning metropolis of Lander, WY.

As you may recall, WCC is the only school around where students can’t have a cellphone but can have gun.

They have Horsemanship Instructors on the faculty.

They are fortunate enough to have Prof. Nancy Llewellyn there for Latin!

Prof. Peter Kwasniewski has a piece at NLM with photos of Solemn Masses recently celebrated at Holy Rosary parish in WCC, which serves as the chapel of the college.  They had a visiting priest around, which made it possible to have the Missa Solemnis.  If I ever get there again, I hope we might be able to do the same.

Check out the photos.

Here is a sample:

Wyoming Catholic College has great curriculum as well as fine programs during the summer.  My one brief visit left me deeply impressed with the students.

Finally, check out this book by Peter Kwasniewski:

Resurgent in the Midst of Crisis: Sacred Liturgy, the Traditional Latin Mass, and Renewal in the Church  UK link HERE

He also has A Missal for Young Catholics

Also, I recently received another book – from one of you readers – with an intro by PK.  It was briefly out of print.  It must have sold like wildfire.  It is now available again.

Finally in English… The Memoirs of Louis Bouyer: From Youth and Conversion to Vatican II, the Liturgical Reform, and After

I have this on my table in my short, priority stack.

My sister (the one wearing sunglasses in the sidebar ad) will be a senior there this year. It’s basically our high school on steroids, except trad Cath instead of ecumenical, plus a bajillion outdoor activities. She loves it there, so it must be a good fit for her, though it wouldn’t be for me.

  2. Thank you for the tip on The Memoirs of Louis Bouyer!

There’s a good way to ensure folks can still read a book even if printed copies are sold out… (almost all my books are read on Kindle nowadays, although WCC I don’t think allows those devices).

I just now clicked on your link and ordered it after several frustrating days of being told my Amazon that it was not available. Get ’em while they last!!

I loved Prof. Kwasniewski’s Resurgent in the Midst of Crisis. It’s the kind of book you want to take a highlighter to so you can find those choice quotes again.

I also purchased multiple copies of his Missal for Young Catholics to put out with the red booklet missals that we have for our EF Masses. So far we have not had many young Catholics to use them.

But just lately we have been graced with a family with three altar server sons who drive miles from another parish so the boys can serve. (Sometimes at 8:00 in the morning!) The mom saw these missals and wanted one for her ten year old who is learning to serve along with his two older brothers. So of course I gave her one. The next Mass the younger boy was using the Missal for Young Catholics while his brothers used their “adult” missals. It has the ordinary in Latin and English and makes it clear when to refer to the propers. The print is good sized, too. I’m thinking it would be suitable for more than young Catholics! There is nothing juvenile about it!

.”…students can’t have a cell phone but can have a gun.” Curious comment [Not really. Students can’t have cellphones there, but they can have guns.]

A Solemn Mass is a magnificent experience. I was very fortunate to attend six, three of them in Europe. While it is getting more common in the USA, if you have never seen one I can recommend watching this 1941 Easter Mass. Enjoy.

I cannot say enough good things about Prof. Kwasniewski’s book! Ultimately, it led me to some excellent discussion with him on facebook, and that, in turn, led me to read Fr. Gisdorf’s Signs of the Times, an author and volume which had escaped my attention, and is another excellent (and even essential) read.

Lander, a “burgeoning metropolis“? hee, hee, hee!

One of the biggest hurdles in celebrating a Missa Solemnis, or High Mass, is finding the sacred ministers.

It is rare that a parish will have enough clergy “in house”. One of the unintended side effects of the transferring of feasts to the nearest Sunday is increased availability on the actual feast. We have been lucky to have a few Missae Solemnis in our parish. We have two priests who have been very generous with their time, both of whom have their own parishes elsewhere. They have been able to visit us to act as deacon and subdeacon only because they haven’t been required to celebrate Mass in their own parishes.
