Photo by The Great Roman™ … in line to see Pope Benedict.
UPDATE: Inside the Basilica, they are reading quotes of Benedict about the Mass and Eucharist for the recitation of the Rosary.
Meanwhile,…
White to move and improve.
NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.
Priestly chess players, drop me a line. HERE
1. Rxg5+ Kh8 (not Kf7, which leads to mate)
2. Bxc3
R-f5+, moving White’s rook out of jeopardy and forcing Black’s king to either
(i) K-h8, where Bxc3+ not only wins a rook, but also ends in mate after Black exhausts its interpositions, or
(ii) K-f7, blocking Black’s rook file aimed at f2, and leaving White’s bishop to pick up Black’s unguarded rook at c3 while maintaining an aggressive position, threatening Black’s unguarded knight at b2 and/or further harassing Black’s indecently exposed king.
My take.
White to move.
Rooks are hanging.
1. Bxc3 Bxd5
2. Bxb2 black is clearly better. Look at that f2 pawn.
1. Rg5+ Kf7
2. Bxc3 white is clearly better.
Of course, I meant R-g5+
