17 Dec: 77th Birthday of His Holiness Pope Francis

On this day in 1936, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires to Mario José Bergoglio and his wife Regina María Sívori.

Pope Francis, 266th Successor of Peter, is now 77.

Pray for him today (and obtain a partial indulgence).

You might also say a prayer for his parents as well.

V. Oremus pro Pontifice nostro Francisco.

R. Dominus conservet eum, et vivificet eum, et beatum faciat eum in terra, et non tradat eum in animam inimicorum eius.

Oremus.

Deus, omnium fidelium pastor et rector, famulum tuum Franciscum, quem pastorem Ecclesiae tuae praeesse voluisti, propitius respice: da ei, quaesumus, verbo et exemplo, quibus praeest, proficere: ut ad vitam, una cum grege sibi credito, perveniat sempiternam. Per Christum, Dominum nostrum. Amen.

V. Let us pray for our Pontiff, Francis.

R. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth, and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.

Let us pray.

O God, Shepherd and Ruler of all Thy faithful, look mercifully upon Thy servant Francis, whom Thou hast chosen as shepherd to preside over Thy Church: grant him, we beseech Thee, that, by word and example, he may edify those over whom he hath charge, so that together with the flock committed to him, he may attain everlasting life. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

And, with birtitualism in mind, “Mnohaja Lita”!

And, with an echo of the Latin borrowed into several tongues: “Proficiat”!

And yet another honor for His Holiness, a gift for his happy 77th: He is The Advocate’s Person of the Year. Lest any think I am making this up http://www.advocate.com/year-review/2013/12/16/advocates-person-year-pope-francis

Well, we have a new bishop-vetting group named. It promises to be quite a ride.

  11. Vecchio di Londra says:

    Ad multos annos!
I gladly prayed for him. We need the leadership of a surefooted and eloquent Holy Father.
I like indulgences, and seek them out.
(Btw, I hope the Holy Father doesn’t think indulgences are too vieux jeu, too passé, too, – oh, what’s the word I’m looking for? – too…traditional?)
    :-)

  12. benedetta says:

I hope our Holy Father has an excellent birthday!

I am praying for him also. I think his message of Gospel joy is greatly needed in our times. And I like how he, like previous Popes in their own ways, seems geared toward the needs of the youth who are facing very difficult times ahead with terrible economic times combined with all they are having to inherit from the previous generations. It can be very discouraging and worse without access to grace in the sacraments. May our Holy Father’s words and prayers bring them close to the Lord and help them to realize the joy of the Gospel in all circumstances.

  13. Eugene says:

May God help, guide and protect our Holy Father Francis.
May he help him to proclaim the eternal truths of our faith clearly and with greater forcefulness and my He make him ever more sensitive and open to the traditional worship practices of our Church.
(My daily prayer for the Pope)
