QUAERITUR: Pilgrimages

From a reader:

Do you lead regular pilgrimages each year? If so, do you post these on your blog so we could also go? My husband and I try to go on pilgrimage once a year. God bless you!

I do not.  This last pilgrimage was the first I have ever done.  It was an interesting experience and I learned a lot from it.

I think I would be open to doing another pilgrimage, under the right conditions.

Pilgrimages are special occasions: all sorts of different people are jumbled together for a little microcosm of life’s overarching pilgrimage through this vale of tears.

If you go to Rome to seek the King
And you do not bring Him with you
    You shall not find Him

Well, I would want to go. I could afford about $40. This may limit me to the bus daytrip parish pilgrimages. :-) Actually I couldn’t afford the most recent one. Maybe the TMSM can organize a bus daytrip????

Whan that Aprille with his shoures soote,
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote,
And bathed every veyne in swich licóur
    Of which vertú engendred is the flour;
Whan Zephirus eek with his swete breeth
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth
The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne
Hath in the Ram his halfe cours y-ronne,
    And smale foweles maken melodye,
That slepen al the nyght with open ye,
So priketh hem Natúre in hir corages,
Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages . . .

  5. Gosh Father, that’s about the most tactful post I’ve ever read from you. The imagination runs riot, but I’m afraid that all I can think of at present is Evelyn Waugh’s Basil Seal and his failed attempt to be a tourist guide that’s mentioned in Put Out More Flags. Did you end up making a bundle of all the tickets and all the passports and sinking them in the nearest Italian lake?

  6. Philippa Martyr says: tickets and all the passports and sinking them in the nearest Italian lake?

Not at all. The pilgrimage was good! I would do another, though I might have suggestions about the pace and about people’s mobility.

I can’t think of anyone better than you to lead a pilgrimage to Rome. You’re so knowledgeable about the art, music, architecture, and everytthing else about the seat of the Catholic Church.

Good thing you made it out of there before the big St. Jude storm though. Some of the pictures going around on twitter are unbelievable considering the storm only had 100 mph winds. Nothing like Sandy when she hit here on the East coast, but still plenty strong enough to wreak some havoc.

  8. Sid Cundiff in NC says:

    who? Fr Z.
what? leading a pilgrimage for Extraordinary Form folk
    where? Rome
when? Holy Week at Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini, the FSSP church
how? with spiritual conferences from Fr. Z; tours of Rome by Fr. Z; meals at Fr. Z’s favorite restaurant; folks finding their own lodgings, own flights.
    why? grace

Of course another time of year, especially in winter, would have less crowds in the city.

  10. Gaz says:

While we’re talking pilgrimages… I might just say that many of us have just completed the 23rd annual Christus Rex pilgrimage in Australia. We process from St Patrick’s Cathedral Ballarat to Sacred Heart Cathedral Bendigo over 3 days. Solemn Mass each day (pontifical high for Sunday this yea), confessions on the road, Rosary (said and sung in English and Latin), compline, exposition overnight, instruction during the breaks. This year’s was excellent and pilgrims thank the organisers and the clergy involved. Crex.org

The comments to this post were at best disappointing. It appears that Gaz understands the graces received while on pilgrimage. A pilgrimage can be fairly inexpensive if held near to home or very expensive if it involves international travel and hotels. It has been my experience that you meet like minded people on a pilgrimage, i.e., those who are in love with GOD, and for the most part, one leaves one’s secular cares behind.
