VIDEO: Pius XII declaring the Dogma of the Assumption

The fabled pastor of my home parish, the late Msgr. Richard Schuler told stories about being in Rome when Ven. Pius XII infallibly declared the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin to be a dogma of the Faith.  He was present for the procession with the icon of Salus Populi Romani and for the proclamation.

Here is a video about the event in 1950.

And there is this… just after 26:00 you hear Pius reading the actual Proclamation of the Dogma.

If you ever want to see how the Church was once respected in the US and particularly in New York (not doubt lots of Catholic readers), read the NY Times (probably the 8-16-50 edition) coverage of this event. Sad to see how far left the culture has swung and how much moral authority the Church has lost as a result of the pervert priests.

  2. Wow! Was that ever some glorious times!

Side note, my cousins have an interesting relic in their private chapel… a papal zuchetto of Pope Pius XII.

Fascinating newsreel. Note the time traveller at about 58 seconds recording the event with her smart phone.

Great documentary too. My French is a little rusty but the commentator speaks very clearly.

Indeed, he does speak rather clearly and precisely—one used to be able to expect that of broadcast narrators. My objection, though, is that anyone other than the Holy Father is speaking at all. It’s kind of annoying.
