1st Vespers at San Pietro

I clicked on my Centro Televisivo Vaticano player for 1st Vespers from St. Peter’s Basilica.  The Holy Father presides.

The chant by the schola is improving.  They are singing alternately with the congregation.  From what I can tell, quite a few of the congregation are singing.

People will get used to singing at these events until it is again normal.

It is fun to spot people I know in the crowd.

Te Deum!

U.S. Bishops call for project of prayer, fasting to begin 30 DECEMBER to defend Life, Marriage, Religious Liberty – FR Z POLL

Please use the sharing buttons!  Thanks!

POLLS BELOW!

Did you know that the Bishops of these United States of America have asked for Catholics to pray, fast and abstain on Fridays, and take part in a holy hour each month?

Call To Prayer For Life, Marriage, And Religious Liberty

What: The U.S. bishops have approved a pastoral strategy to advance a Movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty. It is essentially a call to prayer, penance, and sacrifice for the sake of renewing a culture of life, marriage, and religious liberty in our country. Click here for a one-page handout about the Call to Prayer that is suitable for use as a bulletin insert or flyer.

Why: The well-being of society requires that life, marriage, and religious liberty are promoted and protected. Serious threats to each of these goods, however, have raised unprecedented challenges to the Church and to the nation. Two immediate flashpoints are the following:

First is the HHS Mandate, which requires almost all employers, including Catholic employers, to pay for employees’ contraception, sterilization, and abortifacient drugs regardless of conscientious objections. This is a clear affront to America’s first freedom, religious liberty, as well as to the inherent dignity of every human person.

Second, current trends in both government and culture are moving toward redefining marriage as the union of any two persons, ignoring marriage’s fundamental meaning and purpose as the universal institution that unites a man and a woman with each other and with the children born from their union. These challenges call for increased awareness and formation, as well as spiritual stamina and fortitude among the faithful, so that we may all be effective and joyful witnesses of faith, hope and charity.

When: In this Year of Faith, starting on the feast of the Holy Family (Dec. 30, 2012) until the feast of Christ the King (Nov. 24, 2013)

Who: All of the Catholic faithful are encouraged to participate

Where: Throughout the entire country; at your local parish, cathedral, school or home

They make suggestions for ways to participate at the site I linked, above.

A couple questions.

First….

Before reading Fr Z's blog entry, did you know about the USCCB's "Call To Prayer For Life, Marriage, And Religious Liberty"?

Second…

Do you plan to participation in the USCCB's "Call To Prayer For Life, Marriage, And Religious Liberty"

The Ghost of Lib-Mass Yet To Come

Someone sent me a link to an article in Hell’s Bible (aka The New York Times) about “experimental worship” and moving beyond institutional church… sort of like what the National catholic Reporter praises.

There is some pretty crazy stuff in the NYT piece.  For example:

One Sunday before Easter, the pastor at the Relevant Church in Tampa, Fla., wearing a rabbit suit, whisked the unsuspecting congregation away on chartered buses to a nearby park to build enthusiasm for the coming service.

Crazy, yes, but nothing new. Sounds like a Jesuit-run college chapel.

In reading the NYT piece, if you bother, you might find yourself asking, as I did:

What’s so new about Protestant sects (or liberal catholics) engaging in experimental worship?

On the other hand, in sync with LCWR’s call to “move beyond Jesus”, and liberals’ cry in general to move beyond the “institutional church”, we will be urged to move beyond active participation to inter-active participation.

Thank you, Pope Benedict for Summorum Pontificum.

Protestants (or liberal catholics) have been seeking for that ever elusive holy grail “Relevance” since they introduced hymns into their “liturgy”.

The Ghost of Lib-Mass yet to come.

Z-CAM & RADIO SPTDV – Latin Rosary and Christmas music

You can reach the Ustream page of the Z-Cam & Radio SPTDV (olim Radio Sabina) here.

I don’t control the ads that pop up, alas. I have found that “Ad Block” works on them, however.

Right now I have some predominantly sacred Christmas music and Latin Prayers, including the Rosary, in Latin.  I’ll change the list around from time to time.  After the Christmas Octave, I will switch the list around.

I can’t keep it going all the time.  Check this blog’s sidebar for when Father Z TV is “Live”.

The webcam is aimed right now at one side of my smallish window feeder.  It’s not like the old days, alas, but new birds are finding it.  And there is a pair of Cardinals around.  You should see busy Chickadees, Nuthatches, various finches.

The Z-Cam is limited to one cam at the moment, since the “mothership” desktop (donated by a reader) died.  Hopefully soon I’ll get a couple more cams set up.

From nuns to ‘nones’: 10 ways religion shaped the news in 2012 – revised

Some of you who have been internet dumpster diving have probably noticed that the National catholic Fishwrap presented their readers with a list of the “10 ways religion shaped the news in 2012”.

They got it wrong, as usual.

Here is the actual list as a corrective.

Fr. Z’s 10 Most Important Religious News Stories in 2012

  1. Pope Benedict XVI celebrates 85th Birthday (16 April)
  2. Pope Benedict XVI denounces gay marriage and gender construction during his annual Christmas message (12 December)
  3. The CDF issues Doctrinal Assessment of the LCWR and imposes controls (18 April)
  4. No-longer-Father Roy Bourgeois, excommunicate, dismissed from Maryknoll “Order” by CDF (4 October)
  5. General Synod of Church of England rejects women bishops (20 November)
  6. USCCB declares war on Obama Administration over HHS Mandate (6 February)
  7. Pope Benedict XVI issues motu proprio “The Service of Charity”, calling bishops to strengthen the religious identity of Catholic charities, and thereby vindicates Bishop Olmsted of Phoenix (11 November)
  8. Establishment of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter for ex-Anglicans in these U.S.A. (1 January)
  9. 1st Anniversary of the new, much improved, serenely-received English translation of the Roman Missal (27 November)
  10. 7th Anniversary of Fr Z’s Blog, fighting bad liturgy and catholic leftist propaganda (29 December)
