From nuns to ‘nones’: 10 ways religion shaped the news in 2012 – revised

Some of you who have been internet dumpster diving have probably noticed that the National catholic Fishwrap presented their readers with a list of the “10 ways religion shaped the news in 2012”.

They got it wrong, as usual.

Here is the actual list as a corrective.

Fr. Z’s 10 Most Important Religious News Stories in 2012

  1. Pope Benedict XVI celebrates 85th Birthday (16 April)
  2. Pope Benedict XVI denounces gay marriage and gender construction during his annual Christmas message (12 December)
  3. The CDF issues Doctrinal Assessment of the LCWR and imposes controls (18 April)
  4. No-longer-Father Roy Bourgeois, excommunicate, dismissed from Maryknoll “Order” by CDF (4 October)
  5. General Synod of Church of England rejects women bishops (20 November)
  6. USCCB declares war on Obama Administration over HHS Mandate (6 February)
  7. Pope Benedict XVI issues motu proprio “The Service of Charity”, calling bishops to strengthen the religious identity of Catholic charities, and thereby vindicates Bishop Olmsted of Phoenix (11 November)
  8. Establishment of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter for ex-Anglicans in these U.S.A. (1 January)
  9. 1st Anniversary of the new, much improved, serenely-received English translation of the Roman Missal (27 November)

Congrats on your blog anniversary, Father. I first heard of your blog on 07-07-07 when a friend showed it to me. Thanks for all that you have done for us. God bless you!

  2. Charles E Flynn says:

Although it ranked only ninth, the new translation of the Roman Missal appears to have sold out its mug on a certain Website.

    Huzzay!

Kind Fr. Z, you are an anchor in the sea of “Mass confusion.” May God’s good graces continue to inspire you onward as you help lead us who venture herein towards heaven’s door. I am always learning something when I visit this fine blog of yours.
I like the list too…wonderful Papa Benedito is such a blessing to us all. Makes me happy to see his smiling face lit with the joy of the Spirit. I hope and pray for the same and of course, for all of you too.

#11. the Pope’s Motu Proprio Lingua Latina

  6. JKnott says:

This great and true list should be published in every single diocesan newspaper in the country.

  7. frjim4321 says:

Well they’re two different kinds of list. They both have validity in terms of what they’re trying to accomplish. They both claim to be about religion. But they are both limited in scope. The term “religion” refers to more than just the Catholic Church.

It’s easy to get all excited about list of this nature. But by definition list such as this will always be incomplete. The NCR list surveyed a much broader spectrum of Catholic issues. The list here seemed limited to issues of an institutional nature. As I said both lists have their own for litsea. They both accomplish what they set out to do according to their own rules.

  8. LOL!

Who can point out what frjim4321 has missed?

  9. benedetta says:

There is no religion whatsoever behind the fishwrap’s agenda.

frjim4321 articulates the very definition of the dictatorship of relativism. A dictatorship which is hostile to logic, beauty, and the truth.

  10. jameeka says:

uh,,,one list consists of events which are strengthening the Catholic Church, the Bride of Christ, and the other is totally destroying Her.

  11. Gratias says:

Congratulations on your seventh anniversary Father. You can now reach a huge number of traditional OF and EF Catholics. A great electronic parish. May God bless your apostolate in 2013. Happy New Year.

  12. JonPatrick says:

In the 2013 list I hope to read “1. Holy Father publicly celebrates the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite”.

  13. Supertradmum says:

ummm there is only one true religion, the kingdom of God, created by Christ on earth, and it subsits in the institution of the Catholic Church…and NCR calls itself Catholic. I like your list, Fr. Z.

  14. cyriss01 says:

    Father,
I noticed that #10, your 7th Anniversary of fighting bad liturgy and catholic leftist propaganda falls on December 29 which is the feast day of St. Thomas Becket of Canterbury. Any significance? [Coincidence.]

  15. cyriss01 says:

Well St. Thomas is my patron saint so I had to ask. Though even being coincidence I will add some extra prayers to him for help against your and our fight against bad liturgy and catholic leftist propaganda. Andwith that i will add a quote from Mark Twain if he had been Catholic(that is with the Big “C”):

” ‘There are three kinds of heresies: Heresies, Damn Heresies, and Fishwrap.”
