A tech success! Finally!

I haven’t had too many tech successes lately, given the number of disasters there have been.

Some time ago a kind reader sent me a network power switch… incredibly useful gizmo, let me tell you!  Especially when you are on the road as much as I am, but still using all the things back home.

In any event, I was finally able to get this network power switch to work!  It is now living happily on the network and I have used my mobile phone to turn on and off the power plug-ins.

The only draw back is that if there is a power loss, it reverts to its default settings.  There is no way to save your network settings so that when the power comes on again, it can be reached.  This will have to be connected to a UPS for sure.

I also solved a sound card problem on the mothership.

In the meantime, I have not yet succeeded in setting up the virtual drive so that I can open the VHD with my backup files.  Grrrrr.

    Father,

If you have a Windows XP or VISA Machine, have you tried installing Microsoft VirturalPC – and using that program to Open the VHD Files?

There is also VirturalBox – an Open Source solution.

Wonder if there will be a patron saint of computer problems anytime. “St. _ please help me resolve the black screen I get whenever I turn on the computer.”

Incidentally, that is the issue I have with the computer I usually use for schoolwork, but it’s not the only computer, so it’s fine (for now). Plus, it’s from 1998 anyhow.

Moral of the story: To anyone considering Linux, be prepared for trouble if you try switching back.
