1 Dec: St. Nahum, Prophet of the Old Testment

Many Old Testament figures are numbered among the saints by the Catholic Church. You can find them listed in the Martyrologium Romanum.

1. Commemoratio sancti Nahum, prophetae, qui Deum praedicavit cursum temporum regentem et populos in iustitia iudicantem.

NahumYes, folks, once again today is the feast of St. Nahum, whose book is betwixt Micah and Habakkuk.

We don’t know much about this figure, historically. He was from the town Alqosh close to the end of the Assyrian reign. Like Johan, Nahum warns Ninevah of its destruction (612 BC).

Whenever I hear about Assyrians I think of a poem by Byron called the Destruction of Sennacherib which, though occurring earlier than Nahum, nevertheless concerns a biblical event recounted in 2 Kings. Read it aloud for some real fun!

THE DESTRUCTION OF SENNACHERIB, first published in 1815

The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold;
And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea,
When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.

Like the leaves of the forest when Summer is green,
That host with their banners at sunset were seen:
Like the leaves of the forest when Autumn hath blown,
That host on the morrow lay withered and strown.

For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed;
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!

And there lay the steed with his nostril all wide,
But through it there rolled not the breath of his pride;
And the foam of his gasping lay white on the turf,
And cold as the spray of the rock-beating surf.

And there lay the rider distorted and pale,
With the dew on his brow, and the rust on his mail:
And the tents were all silent, the banners alone,
The lances unlifted, the trumpet unblown.

And the widows of Ashur are loud in their wail,
And the idols are broke in the temple of Baal;
And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword,
Hath melted like snow in the glance of the Lord!

And some people think our guardian angels are like those girly men in the cute pictures.

2 Kings 19:35-36: And that night the angel of the LORD went forth, and slew a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. Then Sennach’erib king of Assyria departed, and went home, and dwelt at Nin’eveh.

In any event, you might sit down with Nahum today and read for a while.  Remember, there is an indulgence available for reading Sacred Scripture!

From the Prophet Nahum:

15:Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good tidings, who proclaims peace! Keep your feasts, O Judah, fulfil your vows, for never again shall the wicked come against you, he is utterly cut off.

An appropriate passage for this 1st Sunday of Advent.

Darth Vader v. Batman

This is very cool.

WARNING: The last minute or so of this counts among the most annoying video and audio I have ever seen or heard. Till then, however…

And now, just because it is so wonderful, once again the Passat commercial.

BTW… in this annoying video HERE there is a scene from the same people in which Vader faces off with Gandalf and then takes the Ring from Frodo.

And then there’s Captain America v. Master Chief. Hmmm….

Christmas shopping, Advent, and You

It is Advent, and we must let Advent be Advent.   It is a time of spiritual preparing for receiving the Lord, who comes now and will come to us in many ways.  In fact, it is a time of spiritual warfare, as St. Paul reminded us yesterday during Holy Mass in the traditional Roman Rite, which Catholics heard year in and out for so many centuries:

“Let us therefore lay aside the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. … put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”

We are warriors on the march toward the Lord who is also coming to us.

That said, we all have a lot to do before Christmas, so that the last days before Christmas aren’t a mere frenzy of material concerns. Doing your planning and shopping now can help you save money and precious time, especially as time narrows toward the Feast of the Nativity of the Lord.

Make your lists of things to do and get to work so that you have as little to do at the end as possible.

To save you some time, remember that you can always order Mystic Monk Coffee and Z-Swag and, pretty please, remember to use my Amazon search box on the side bar for online shopping.

We have to balance our desires to observe Christmas with both spiritual and material concerns. Getting to it now will help you relax later and, after letting Advent be Advent, letting Christmas be Christmas.

And, above all…

GO TO CONFESSION!

Make that a top priority on your To Do List.

“Let us therefore lay aside the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. … put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Modern “art” in churches: the joy of the Enemy

I don’t know about you, but I can’t see any value in having this hideous thing in a church.

This rubbish is now hanging in the Jesuitenkirche (Jesuit Church) of Vienna.

No.  Really.

Corriere della Sera has the sad story.

Need an explanation?  I’ll bet you do.   I’ll bet you all the money in your pocket that you can’t say what this thing represents without looking at an explanation.

“To be in limbo”.

Yes. I know.

This piece of… thing… is 8 meters high, weighs 700kg, and will stay there until 19 April 2015.  So, rush to Vienna to see it.

It is meant – I am not making this up – to symbolize “faith and its menacing aspects”.

Only Jesuits could allow into their church something that make the faith look like a piece of… thing.

If this isn’t the representation of self-absorbed promethean neopelagians, I don’t know what would be.

What is Card. Burke up to? Interview.

We all want to know how Card. Burke is doing.  From CNA:

Cardinal Burke opens up about his new office with Knights of Malta

By Jan Bentz

Rome, Italy, Nov 29, 2014 / 06:01 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Nov. 8 the Vatican announced the transfer of Cardinal Raymond Burke from prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, which ensures correct administration of justice in the Church, to Patron of the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta.

In an interview on Nov. 21, Cardinal Burke explained his new role to CNA.

“The technical title is Patron,” he stated. “It is an office of representation of the Holy Father to the grand master of the sovereign military order.”

Cardinal Burke will be helping Fra. Matthew Festing, Prince and Grand Master of the “Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta”, colloquially known as the “Knights of Malta.”

“He is actually a professed religious, but not a priest. My work principally is to assist him, to be a spiritual guide to him, and to carry forward the great work of the order.”

The order sets itself two principal missions.

“The defense of the faith: the ’defensio fidei’, [ummm… tuitio not defensio] and then care for the poor, [obsequium pauperum] the ‘obsequium pauperum.’ Both of these things go together, because you obviously need deep faith and the strength that comes from Christ to serve those who deserve to be served.” [It is interesting that in the some of the literature coming from the Knights of Malta in these United States that all important phrase “tuitio fidei” is being translated as “witness to the faith”.  That is NOT what it means.  It means “defense of the faith”.  What’s up with that?]

The order was established in 1099, and recognized as sovereign by the Pope in 1113. It has more than 13,000 members and 80,000 volunteers today. Among them are 20,000 medical personnel such as doctors, nurses, auxiliaries, and paramedics.

The Knights are present in over 120 countries, some of which Burke will visit as part of his office.

“I will be going out to visit the Knights in various parts of the world where the Knights are active. They are widespread, it is a large order, and it is very active in many aspects.”

The order has the peculiarity of being a religious order composed of lay people. This gives them a unique spirit, but creates also challenges for their structure, and dealings within the Church.

“There will be also the possibility of drawing from my knowledge as a canon lawyer to address the complex canonical questions which are tied to an order which has professed religious and also lay members in different ranks.”

The cardinal voiced his optimism for the future and his work with the Grand Master, and is looking forward to his new assignment.

I have no doubt that His Eminence will do well in whatever task he is given.

ISIS to children: ‘Convert! Say the words!’ Children to ISIS: ‘No, We Love Jesus’

Ex ore infantium… perfecisti laudem.

Some scholars of Late Antiquity are skeptical about or even scoff at the ancient tales about Christian children who refused to renounce Christ even in the face of terrible pain and fear.

Even in our modern period, we have seen the same thing repeated among the martyrs of China: children remain faithful.

Now, members of the Religion of Peace are busy killing Christian children. What else is new.

Here is a story from the Orthodox Christian Network:

Before Being Killed, Children Told ISIS: ‘No, We Love Jesus’

Andrew White, an Anglican priest known as the “Vicar of Baghdad,” has seen violence and persecution against Christians unprecedented in recent decades.
In the video embedded below, he recounts the story of Iraqi Christian children who were told by ISIS militants to convert to Islam or be killed. Their response? “No, We Love Yeshua (Jesus).”

Sts. Nunilo and Alodia, pray for us.

St. Lawrence of Brindisi, pray for us.

ADVENT: Ideas for your season of preparation

You might consider some reading for your Advent preparation.

If you haven’t yet read Benedict XVI’s third volume of Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives, it is a great place to start!

The Holy Father’s book presents a real defense of the historicity of the infancy narratives.

US hardcover HERE.  Kindle HERE. Unabridged audio HERE. Large print HERE.
UK hardcover HERE. Kindle HERE.  Large print HERE.

Also, for Advent, you might try something I read two years ago.  Try the reflections by a priest who died under the Nazi regime, Fr. Alfred Delp, in the book Advent of the Heart: Seasonal Sermons And Prison Writings 1941-1944. Kindle HERE. UK HERE.
