A favor please.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Rev. Robert Crouse, a priest of the Church of Canada (Episcopalian/Anglican) who was a friend.
I met him years ago at the Augustinianum in Rome where he taught as a visiting professor.
Prof. Crouse taught for a long time at King’s/Dalhousie in Halifax, NS, in the Classics Department. His former students speak of him always in glowing terms.
Robert was a great scholar, a fine musician, brilliant educator, excellent cook, and one of the finest gentlemen I have ever met.
He shared my apartment in Rome for a semester while he was teaching there. In the evenings I would prepare the first course, he the second, and then we read Dante’s Divine Comedy from beginning to end, a few cantos a night, I reading in Italian with facing page translations, and he commenting and explaining. He was a great expert on Dante, and also on John Scotus Eriugena. He helped me with my first thesis as well. We also traveled around looking at Romanesque churches, sometime way out in the countryside so that we nearly needed hayricks to reach them. It was he who spurred my love of that style of architecture.
Robert Crouse is one of those men for whom I have little worry as far as the after life is concerned.
But we who are still in this vale of tears must never presume.
We must constantly implore God’s mercy for the souls of those who have died and He will dispose all according to His will.
Please say a prayer for the repose of the soul of Robert Crouse, who died recently.

I have also been blessed with the friendship of non-Catholic clergy who are Godly men and who are exemplary in their search to give God glory. May Dr. Crouse be received by the Good Shepherd into paradise and there meet those whose wisdom he studied here on earth.

I had the Rev. Dr as a professor and it was a great blessing. He inspired my love of Dante and was among the first to show me that there was such a thing as a Catholic intellectual tradition, and not just the Charismatic renewal. He was always a gentle man whose first concern was the Gospel.
I know he suffered from what Anglicanism was inflicting on itself in Canada and elsewhere, and saw himself as working for the day of corporate reunion. While I find it sad that he never joined the Catholic Church, I see him as of that generation of Anglicans who prepared the way for Anglicanorum coetibus. May he rest in peace.

I also very much appreciate your sharing a little of your friendship and experiences with Dr. Crouse. It is a great thing to me to see your example of how to be a friend, and how to just enjoy one another’s company and shared interests, and spend purely leisure time together. Being a good friend is apparently a talent. May I have such a friend as Dr. Crouse some day!
Two points: one, we often don’t think about how the death of someone affects his friends as deeply as it does his family; I try to remember friends of the deceased when praying for mourners. Secondly, just as we pray for those who have been influential in guiding us to where we are in life today, we can remember to pray for those who have mentored our mentors. May your friend and teacher rest in the peace of God’s eternal glory .
