5 Facts about the Little Sisters of the Poor SCOTUS case

From the Becket Fund For Religious Liberty:

Dear Friends,
The world watched while the Pope, during his US tour, made a surprise visit to the Sisters “in support of the Sisters’ legal fight.” As you may know, on Holy Wednesday, March 23, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Little Sisters of the Poor case in Zubik v. Burwell—a case that also includes several other ministries.

I am writing today to invite you to visit our new resources on this case:
• Website: New website that explains the case: thelittlesistersofthepoor.com
• Rally: On March 23, there will be a rally in front of the Supreme Court. For rally coordination details, please contact Meg McDonnell at Women Speak for Themselves.
• Meet the Little Sisters in this series of 90 second videos.

The fate of the Little Sisters is the fate of all Americans. I hope you will partner with us in educating the public about the importance of this case and in fighting for religious liberty!

FIVE FACTS ABOUT THE LITTLE SISTERS’ SUPREME COURT CASE

1. 1 in 3 Americans are not even covered by the mandate HHS is fighting so hard to force the Little Sisters to follow.
2. Exxon, Chevron, and Pepsi—as well as other large corporations—are exempt from the mandate, because they never changed their plans and are “grandfathered.” Family plans with the U.S. military, the largest employer in the world, are also exempted.
3. If the Little Sisters do not provide these services, the government is threatening to fine them with $70 million in fines per year.
4. This case does not endanger or affect the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It only deals with a regulation created by an agency—Health and Human Services—which would force the Sisters to provide services like the week after pill, ella, to its employees.
5. The government claims it offered them an “opt out.” The Sisters wish that were true. The government’s plan is an “opt in” that uses the Little Sisters’ healthcare plan. This is why the government insists it needs the Sisters’ signature.

  1. The Masked Chicken says:

Boy, if ever there were a need for the Justices to visited by the Ghost of Scalia Past, this would be it.

    The Chicken

  2. JPK says:

The Little Sisters do have a solid “Equal Protections” case. It matters not why, but ObamaCare isn’t being applied equally – obviously so.

  3. Anthony says:

Sadly, I fear we haven’t yet hit the bottom of the barrel and things are likely to get much worse before they even start to get better.

We get the leaders we deserve.

It’s up to us to beg God for mercy and show Him that we are capable of being led by people of virtue.

    Anthony

  4. Papabile says:

This will either split 4-4 or be 5-3 against the little sisters. Either way, lower court ruling will be upheld.

  5. Facta Non Verba says:

If the decision is a 4-4 tie, then the 10th Circuit’s decision will be final. The 10th Circuit ruled against the Sisters. Not a good outcome at all.
The Sisters made an appearance at the March for Life rally in DC in January. They were treated like rock stars!

  6. Magash says:

As always the most telling thing will be what will the sisters do if the court rules against them?
Capitulation in any form would be sinful. One does not get a pass on sin simply because the state has the physical power to impose its will. Capitulation includes the paying of fines. Why would one pay a fine for refusing to sin? This country will never wake up until a religious sister, priest or bishop is willing to go to prison for not only refusing to cooperate with evil just because the government says so, but also refuses to pay fines for doing the same.
Make the government seize assets and imprison. That’s what it will take for the common citizen to realize the government is crossing over into tyranny.

  7. Susan M says:

    Reply to Magash:

I have an idea. What if people volunteered to go to prison for The Little Sisters of the Poor.

If Obama is going to toss nuns in prison it would interrupt their valuable work for God, so I will volunteer to go in place of one nun, and other people also can volunteer to go until there is one person in Obama’s HHS Prison for every Little Sister of the Poor who would otherwise be there .

  8. DonL says:

Now, if we could just dispense with that gaggle of politically app0ointed robed lawyers and replace them with Solomon, the Sisters wouldn’t even need to bring lunch to court.
