Ven. Nelson Baker

Among the various decrees promulgated by His Holiness was that confirming the heroic virtues of an American diocesan priest:

- le virtù eroiche del Servo di Dio Nelson Baker, Sacerdote diocesano; nato a Buffalo (Stati Uniti d’America) il 16 febbraio 1842 ed morto a Limestone Hill (Stati Uniti d’America) il 29 luglio 1936…

This is good news! Fr. Baker’s charitable works in Buffalo are renowned, and his O.L. of Victory Basilica is an inspiration.

  2. Centristian says:

What, exactly, is the news? I’m afraid I’m not sure what’s being declared, here. Are they going to beatify him?

I was born in the hospital he built and baptized in the basilica he erected.

  3. West of the Potomac says:

Yea! This has been a long time coming. The people of Buffalo have long known Father Baker was a very holy priest.

Our Lady of Victory is stunningly beautiful.

  4. irishgirl says:

Centristian-the decree means that Father Baker practiced the Christian virtues to ‘a heroic degree’. He receives a new title, ‘Venerable’.
After that, there needs to be a miracle attributed to his intercession before he can be beatified.
What a great day-first, the news that John Paul II will be beatified in May, and then, a priest from Upstate NY (where I’m from) makes another step on the road to Sainthood!
    Te Deum Laudamus!

  5. TNCath says:

Msgr. Baker was the “real McCoy.” My grandfather’s aunt, a Sister of St. Joseph of Buffalo, worked very closely with him at St. Joseph’s Orphanage.

  6. Centristian says:

Irishgirl: thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression Father Baker had already been declared “venerable”. Apparently not.

  7. Yeah!! I’m actually going to the Basilica to pray at his tomb in eight days. I love it there. It is the most beautiful church in the US. Ven. Nelson, ora pro nobis! I’ll keep you all in my prayers while there.

Fr. Baker was a domestic prelate and vicar general. He rescued an orphanage and built several charitable institutions. Today, we may consider him a pro-life advocate. I grew up within (long) walking distance of OLV Basilica – which has long held that honor, and often visited. Readers can learn more at http://www.ourladyofvictory.org.

Wonderful news for upstate NY and the entire country!

  10. mdoneil says:

I was born in Our Lady of Victory hospital across the street from the Basilica.

What wonderful news, I’ve long awaited this announcement.

Although when we were kids our mother did threaten to send us to Father Baker’s if we didn’t behave.

  11. Tom in NY says:

@mdoneil: You weren’t the only child who considered that possibility. The Basilica has long been rescued from its soot, and I think WDTPRS readers will enjoy the virtual tour at the URL mentioned above.
    Salutations omnibus.

Tom in NY-Father Baker also had a hand in the founding of the Carmelite nuns’ monastery in Buffalo, the Carmel of St. Therese. I’ve visited it once, in 1998.
The nuns must be ‘over the moon’ with the news of his newest step on the road to sainthood!
