sacrament of penanceFrom a reader:

Reverend and dear Father:

I would like to thank you and all priests.

Because of your blog and other priests’ blogs on the net I have gone to a full and complete confession for the first time in years.

It is really nice to get notes like this.

I, too, thank priests who talking up the Sacrament of Penance.

Like I said earlier, Thank you to the Franciscan priest who went out of his way
to hear my confession. We Catholics are so blessed!

Aside from making frequent use of confession, what else can we do to show our appreciation to our confessors?

Slightly off topic – What is the confessor in the illustration wearing? A dalmatic? A stole with a minder in front? Position of fingers suggests he might be a bishop. ??? Tnx, Bill

When I first joined the Church in 2006, I only attended confession on Good Friday. Once during lent is the minimum, and I was a de minimis kind of guy. Then as my understanding of the faith grew and matured, as I read deeper into the Church, and started reading wdtprs on a daily basis, I started going more often. This lent I will go every other week. I am also grateful to Fr Z, and his blog, and all the good Priests out there who gave of themselves to bring us back again to Christ and his Church.

I opened my bulletin after Mass today, and what did I find? Fr. Z’s 20 Tips for Making a Good Confession.

I think that priests just appreciate it that we show up…:).

Yep. I’d like to thank God for priests who hear confessions, too. I’d even like to thank Him for priests who don’t hear confessions, but I thank Him more for those are supposed to and do.

  10. Augustin57 says:

I remember some years back, this particular individual hadn’t been to Confession in like 20 years, so with the help of God’s grace, he decided to go. The pastor, Fr. T. J. Hebert, who was close to retirement, had a rocker in the confessional. And, you could either go face-to-face, or behind a screen he’d had set up. This guy went behind the screen because he was scared to the point of sweating bullets! Not having been in so long, he didn’t want Father to know who he was!

He said, “I went in, knelt down, and began, ‘Bless me, Father, for I have sinned, it’s been 20 years since my last confession…'” He said Fr. Hebert was rocking as he went in, and when he heard the 20 years part, his rocker came to a screeching halt, and all he said, very softly and kindly, was, “Well, let’s make it a good one!” From then on, he said, all his dread left him! He said he felt like a new man when he walked out of that confessional! :)
